An old concrete stave silo can become a hazard when its base or roof is damaged, the staves or mortar joints are deteriorating, or the structure is leaning. Because the right removal approach depends on the silo’s condition and what surrounds it, have a qualified demolition professional assess the site and plan the work—especially when a barn, cattle building, road, or people are nearby.
How a concrete stave silo can become unsafe
A stave silo is assembled from concrete sections, or staves, with mortar between them and steel bands around the structure. Its roof helps keep water out. If the roof is damaged, moisture can reach the mortar joints; as those joints weaken, the silo’s overall stability may be affected. John Sisulak, owner of Mainline Builds, described that deterioration mechanism in Jodi Henke’s November 22, 2021 article for Successful Farming’s Living the Country Life.
Warning signs that call for an assessment
- Damage at the base: The condition of the base is one of the areas to take seriously when assessing an old silo.
- A damaged roof: Roof damage can let moisture reach the mortar between staves.
- Compromised staves or joints: Deterioration in the concrete sections or mortar can indicate a structural concern.
- A leaning silo: A visible lean is a warning sign, not a reason to assume the structure can safely be pushed over.
These signs warrant an on-site assessment; they do not establish how stable the silo is or which removal method is appropriate.
Why the site determines the removal approach
Henke’s article describes two broad approaches as examples, not as instructions for property owners. A professional may consider the silo’s condition, nearby buildings and roads, whether people could be in the fall area, available work space, and how debris will be controlled. Those factors influence whether a method can protect surrounding property and people.

| Approach described in the article | When it may be considered | Key concern |
|---|---|---|
| Pushing a leaning silo with heavy machinery | Where there is adequate open space and no vulnerable structures in the way. | The intended fall area and surrounding property must be clear and safely managed. |
| Removing material from the top down | When controlling where falling material goes is important. | The work requires a professional plan to direct debris and protect people and property. |
Sisulak described his top-down method this way: “My methods are, I start from the top and everything goes to the inside of the silo,” he said. “So, there’s no risk of things falling to the ground and injuring people that may be close by or anywhere in the vicinity. It preserves lives as well as property. Usually we’ll use a fairly large boom lift, but 90% of the work is just done by hand.” The 90% figure is his description of his own work method, not an industry-wide statistic.
What to ask a demolition professional
When contacting a silo demolition or removal contractor, explain what is near the silo and ask how the contractor will assess the structure and control debris. Useful questions include:
