A table saw miter jig guides stock through the blade to make angled cuts, but the right fixture depends on the job. A fixed paired-miter sled is designed to cut complementary miters for frames; a crosscut sled handles general guided crosscuts, while an adjustable miter gauge is better suited to changing angles. Before building or buying, match the fixture to the cut, the stock, and your saw’s miter slots and available table support.
What a table saw miter jig does
“Miter jig” can describe different fixtures. A fixed paired-miter sled references two workpieces against adjacent fences so their cuts meet when assembled. A general crosscut sled guides stock across the blade, and an adjustable miter gauge lets you set different angles. These tools are not interchangeable: choose based on the cut you need, not just the product name.
How a paired-miter sled makes frame corners
For a frame corner, the goal is two complementary cuts that fit together. Set the workpieces against adjacent fences in the same relationship they will have in the assembled frame, then cut the miters. In Woodcraft’s design, the critical geometry is that the two fences are precisely 90 degrees to one another. Woodcraft explains that, for this paired-cut method, the fences do not have to be exactly 45 degrees to the blade: the relationship between the mating pieces is what creates a square corner. This does not make the sled a universal solution for arbitrary single-piece angles.
Woodcraft’s plan, by senior editor Paul Anthony, uses runners in the saw’s miter slots, a panel, front and rear rails, and two fences attached to a squared guard block. The plan’s sled measures 28 inches wide by 23 1/2 inches deep by 5 inches high and is described as capable of cutting frame pieces up to 6 inches wide. Those figures apply to that particular plan, not to miter sleds generally. The article was originally published in 2012 and the page says it was updated June 10, 2026: Woodcraft’s Tablesaw Miter Sled plan.

Build and fit a shop-made sled
The plan depends on accurate, stable parts and a sled that travels smoothly. Woodcraft used 1/2-inch, nine-ply hardwood plywood. Do not assume its dimensions will fit every saw; compare the plan with your table, slots, blade path, and clearance before building.
- Prepare the parts. Start with straight, flat, square materials. Cut the panel and fences to the plan’s dimensions only after confirming that the assembly will fit your saw and leave room for the cuts you intend to make.
- Fit the runners. Woodcraft specifies runners 1/16 inch thinner than the miter-slot depth, so they do not drag on the bottom. They should slide easily without side-to-side play. To locate high spots, the guide suggests rubbing carpenter’s pencil graphite on the slot sides and moving the sled to expose contact marks. Trim high spots with a shoulder plane, cabinet scraper, or sandpaper, then check for smooth travel without wobble.
- Assemble and align the fences. Attach the two fences to the squared guard block, then align that assembly to the panel’s kerf and layout lines as described in the plan. The fences must be accurately related to each other for paired cuts. Follow the guide’s instruction to unplug the saw for its blade-alignment step.
- Add the rails and test. Fit the front and rear rails according to the plan. Make test cuts on suitable scrap and check how the mating pieces meet before cutting project stock. Accuracy depends on the materials, runner fit, fence relationship, and setup—not on the fixture’s label alone.
Choose the fixture for the work
| Fixture | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed paired-miter sled | Repeated complementary cuts, such as miters for frame corners. | Fence relationship, stock width and support, runner fit, and clearance for the sled and blade. |
| General crosscut sled | Guided crosscuts; some designs include a fence, stop, hold-down, or zero-clearance kerf. | Slot profile and dimensions, table support, intended saw class, workpiece restraint, and blade clearance. Avanti describes its 71403T kit for a full-size contractor-grade table saw; that is the manufacturer’s intended-use statement, not a universal fit claim. See Avanti’s Crosscut Sled page. |
| Adjustable miter gauge | Changing angles and general guided crosscuts. | Whether its guide bar can be fitted for smooth travel without side play, as described in the Kreg Precision Miter Gauge System manual, and whether its adjustments suit your saw. |
| Combined gauge and sled | Readers seeking an adjustable gauge with sled-style work support. | Slot width, depth, profile and spacing; table support; and whether the maker supports your saw class. INCRA describes its Miter 5000 as a miter gauge combined with a three-panel sled, hold-down clamp, and telescoping fence. Its product page specifies square-sided slots 3/4 inch wide by 3/8 inch deep, slot-width adjustment from 0.740 to 0.765 inch, maximum 12.5-inch center-to-center slot spacing, and at least 10 inches of table support beyond the selected slot. INCRA says it is not recommended for portable or jobsite saws. Confirm current specifications and fit in the current manual and product information: INCRA Miter 5000. |
Before selecting a fixture, compare the cut task, workpiece size, support on the table, saw-slot width, depth and profile, slot spacing, travel and clearance, available stops or hold-downs, adjustability, and the manufacturer’s stated saw compatibility. Product-page claims about precision or safety are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not independent comparative test results.

Check compatibility before use
Slot dimensions and table support vary across saws and accessories. Confirm that the runners or guide bar fit the slot without binding or side play, that the fixture has adequate support, and that it can travel without striking the blade, fence, or other parts. Check both the saw maker’s instructions and the accessory’s current manual; a product category or nominal slot size alone does not establish compatibility.
Rockler’s search-result excerpt for its Table Saw Crosscut Sled Instructions describes that specific sled as intended for cabinet and full-size contractor-grade saws with standard 3/8-inch-deep by 3/4-inch-wide slots, and lists restrictions involving the rip fence, dado blades, blade/fence clearance, and workpiece restraint. These are product-specific details, not rules for every sled; consult the current Rockler sled instructions before relying on them.

Use the jig within safe operating limits
A jig supports and guides stock; it does not cover the blade or remove kickback risk. In its Precision Miter Gauge System owner’s manual, Kreg instructs users, “Never cut freehand,” and “Never use the rip fence and the miter gauge at the same time to support a workpiece.” The manual also advises keeping hands away from a moving blade, supporting long boards at both infeed and outfeed ends, holding work securely against the table and gauge or fence, and following the saw maker’s instructions. Apply the manual for the accessory you own alongside your saw’s instructions; these directions do not replace product-specific guidance.
