Tablesaw Tenoning Jigs Reviewed: How They Work and What to Compare

A tenoning jig holds stock upright for tablesaw cheek cuts, but saw alignment, slot fit, careful adjustment, and separate shoulder cuts still matter.

A tablesaw tenoning jig holds a workpiece upright and square as the blade cuts the cheeks—the broad faces—of a tenon. It controls the stock’s position; it does not cut the tenon’s shoulders or make an inaccurate saw setup safe. For the Delta 34-184, the clearest documented commercial option here, the maker specifies a 3/8 in. × 3/4 in. miter slot, so check your saw’s slot before considering it.

What a tablesaw tenoning jig does

A jig registers in the saw’s miter slot and clamps the board against a support plate and fence. This holds the stock vertically while you pass it through the blade for cheek cuts. After cutting the cheeks to thickness, you make the shoulder cuts separately, typically with a miter gauge. The jig helps control the workpiece; the operator still has to establish the blade height, lateral position, and workpiece orientation. Wood magazine’s comparative coverage and Fine Woodworking’s 2005 review describe this operating principle.

Delta 34-184: the most clearly documented option

Delta specifies a 3/8 in. × 3/4 in. miter-slot fit for its 34-184 Universal Tenoning Jig. The maker also lists a quick-release coarse adjustment, micro-adjustment to 0.004 in., an adjustable positive 90° stop, and a backstop that tilts from 90° to 45°. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of repeatable accuracy. See Delta’s 34-184 product page.

In one comparative test, Wood magazine awarded the jig its Top Tool distinction, citing its quick coarse adjustment, fine adjustment, smooth travel in the miter slot, and handles. A separate Wood magazine test rated it A and noted the rear stop’s 45° tilt, while observing that some tested competitors extended farther. Those are editorial findings from the tests, not a guarantee of results on a particular saw or evidence of current stock. The comparative test and the tool review provide the model-specific context.

What to compare before choosing a jig

Jigs differ in coarse and fine adjustment, clamping, support, and how easily the guide bar can be positioned. The useful choice depends on your saw and the stock and tenons you plan to make—not on a universal ranking.

  • Miter-slot fit: Measure the slot and confirm the maker’s stated dimensions. Check whether the guide bar can be adjusted to take up side play without binding.
  • Adjustment and locking: Consider whether the coarse slide is easy to position and secure, and whether the fine adjustment makes it practical to approach the required tenon thickness with test cuts.
  • Clamp and support: Check the clamp’s range and security for your workpiece sizes, along with the support plate and stops for straight or angled work.
  • Guide-bar relocation: If you may need to move the bar to suit a different saw, see whether that can be done without partial disassembly.
  • Practical handling: Account for the jig’s weight, storage, setup time, handles, and how often you expect to make repeat tenons.

Wood magazine’s tests found meaningful differences: it praised the Rockler 29840’s easy miter-bar relocation, found the WoodRiver 163700 harder to adjust coarsely, and described the Grizzly T30491 as basic but effective. The tested Shop Fox D4902 was described as a cosmetic twin of the Grizzly. The magazine rated Rockler and WoodRiver A−, and Grizzly and Shop Fox B+. These are test-era observations, not confirmation that any model is currently sold or that its specifications remain unchanged; check present-day maker or retailer listings before relying on them. Wood magazine’s comparison covers these models. Fine Woodworking’s 2005 comparison also included several other models, but that historical list does not establish current availability. How to set up and use a tenoning jig

  1. Read both manuals. Follow the instructions for your specific saw and jig. Powermatic’s manual says to understand both manuals before assembly or operation; its instructions apply to that equipment, so do not assume every jig uses identical setup steps. Powermatic’s owner’s manual.
  2. Disconnect power before assembly and setup. Powermatic directs users to disconnect the saw from power during those steps. Follow the equivalent safety instructions for your equipment.
  3. Check the saw before tuning the jig. Powermatic calls for checking that the miter slot is parallel to the blade, that the blade runs true without noticeable runout, and that the blade’s 90-degree position is accurate. A jig does not correct a misaligned saw.
  4. Fit and align the guide bar for the saw and blade. The Powermatic manual describes positioning the bar using the measured distance between the blade and miter slot, then aligning the work stop with a square. The setup is specific to the saw-and-blade combination; repeat it if the jig moves to another saw or a different blade thickness changes the blade-to-slot distance.
  5. Clamp and reference the stock. Place a reference face against the support plate and an edge against the fence, securing the workpiece according to the jig’s instructions.
  6. Set the cheek cut and test the thickness. Set blade height, position the jig laterally for the first cheek, and use the jig’s fine adjustment to approach the target. Make test cuts and adjust before committing to the workpiece; the tenon thickness depends on the relationship between the blade and stock position, not simply on the jig’s adjustment scale.
  7. Cut the opposing cheeks, then the shoulders. Reposition the stock and jig as needed for edge cheeks. Switching between face and edge cheeks commonly requires readjusting the clamp and sliding base unless the workpiece and tenon are square. Remove the jig for the shoulder cuts made with a miter gauge, following the saw and jig manuals.

What the reviews establish—and what they do not

The documented comparisons help identify adjustment and handling differences, and the Delta product page gives specific manufacturer-listed features. They do not establish a universal best jig, current availability for the tested alternatives, or a guaranteed accuracy, time saving, or safety improvement. Treat a rating as an observation from its particular test, then verify the model’s current specifications and fit against your saw.
