First identify whether your television is a TCL Roku TV, Android TV, Google TV, or Fire TV. Standard infrared remotes do not pair; wireless voice and enhanced remotes do.
Use pair for a wireless remote and program for a cable, satellite, or universal remote. “Sync” is commonly used for both.

Identify your TCL TV and remote
| TV platform | How to identify it | Does the remote pair? | Main method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roku TV | Home screen says Roku; remote may have Roku shortcut buttons | Standard remotes do not; voice/enhanced remotes do | Pairing button or infrared troubleshooting |
| Android TV | Home screen and settings identify Android TV | Voice remotes generally pair over Bluetooth | Hold Home + OK |
| Google TV | Home screen uses Google TV branding | Compatible wireless remotes pair | Follow the on-screen instructions; Back + Home may apply to Google TV device remotes |
| Fire TV | Home screen uses Fire TV branding | Wireless remote normally pairs during setup | Hold Home |
Check the TV’s home screen, original packaging, model number, or settings menu. If you cannot operate the menu, look for the platform name printed on the TV or consult the model documentation. A Roku remote, Google TV remote, and Fire TV remote are not automatically interchangeable.

Prepare before pairing
- Turn on the TV using its physical power or control button if necessary.
- Install a fresh, matching set of batteries, observing the + and − markings.
- Keep the remote close to the TV. TCL specifies about 3 feet (1 meter) for Android TV pairing and up to 10 feet (3 meters) for Fire TV setup.
- Clear objects from in front of the TV, especially a soundbar or decorations near the infrared sensor.
- Wait until the TV finishes booting before starting the pairing process.
How to connect a TCL Roku TV remote
Standard Roku infrared remote
If the remote has no pairing button and must be pointed at the television, it is probably an infrared (IR) remote. It does not pair.

- Insert fresh batteries.
- Point the remote directly at the front of the TV.
- Remove anything blocking the TV’s infrared sensor.
- Press Power, Home, or Volume.
To check whether the remote is transmitting, open your phone’s camera, aim the remote’s front tip at the camera, hold a button, and look for a flashing light on the screen. This is only an indication that the remote may be emitting infrared. Some phone cameras filter infrared, and the test does not prove that the TV’s sensor is working.
Roku voice or enhanced remote
- Turn on the TCL Roku TV.
- Open the battery compartment and find the pairing button, usually inside the compartment or on the back.
- Hold the pairing button for about three seconds, or until the pairing light flashes.
- Keep the remote near the TV and wait for the on-screen pairing message.
- Follow the TV’s instructions, then test navigation, power, and volume.
After a restart or after returning to the Roku Home screen, allow about 30 seconds for reconnection. If no light appears, remove and reinstall the batteries, replace them, restart the TV, and try again.
Re-pair a previously working Roku voice remote
- Remove the remote’s batteries.
- Restart the TV with its physical button, or unplug and reconnect it according to the instructions for your model.
- Wait for the TV to return to the Home screen.
- Reinstall the batteries and repeat the pairing-button procedure.
TCL describes more than one Roku restart and power-drain procedure, and timing can vary by model. Give priority to your model’s on-screen instructions and manual. See TCL’s Roku remote troubleshooting guidance.

How to connect a TCL Google TV remote
- Turn on the TV and place the compatible remote close to it.
- Follow any pairing instructions displayed on screen.
- If the remote is a Google TV device remote, try holding Back + Home until pairing begins.
- Release the buttons when the TV confirms the connection and test it.
Back + Home is platform- and device-dependent, not a guaranteed sequence for every TCL television. Google documents that combination for pairing a Google TV device remote, while TCL documents Home + OK for its Android TV remotes. A TCL Google TV remote and a remote supplied with an external Google TV streaming device may not be interchangeable. If pairing fails, use TCL’s support page or your TV’s manual for the exact model.

TCL Roku TV: Roku mobile app
The official Roku mobile app can temporarily control a TCL Roku TV only when the TV is already powered, connected to Wi-Fi, and on the same network as your phone.
- Install the official Roku mobile app.
- Connect the phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the television.
- Open the app and select the TCL Roku TV.
- Open the remote interface.
The app usually cannot discover a TV that is offline, factory-reset, awaiting first-time network setup, connected to another network, or isolated on a guest network. It is not a universal remote app for TCL Google TV or Fire TV televisions. See Roku’s lost-remote guidance.

Programming a cable, satellite, or universal remote
This is different from pairing the original TCL remote. A provider or universal remote is generally programmed with a code. Supported functions may be limited to power, volume, mute, and input, although some remotes also support navigation.
Use TCL’s provider and platform code list and follow the instructions for your exact remote model. For TCL Roku TV, TCL lists examples including:
- Xfinity: 11756
- Verizon Fios: 180
- Spectrum/Time Warner: 387, 1566, 268
- TiVo: 0091, 0366
- GE Universal Remote model 24922: 2891
These are examples, not guaranteed codes for every provider remote. Compatibility can vary by provider, remote model, TV platform, and software version. A universal remote that changes volume may still fail to navigate Roku menus or launch apps.
When pairing fails: troubleshoot in this order
- Replace the batteries. A few working buttons do not prove that the batteries have enough power for pairing.
- Identify the platform again. Home + OK, Back + Home, a battery-compartment pairing button, and Home-only pairing are not universal commands.
- Reduce the distance. Stand close to the TV during wireless pairing.
- Clear the infrared path. This matters for IR remotes; a soundbar can block the sensor.
- Restart the TV. Use the physical control or disconnect power, following your platform’s instructions.
- Repeat only the correct platform procedure. Wait for the on-screen confirmation.
- Try the Roku app or physical controls if you need temporary access.
- Verify replacement compatibility. Match the TV platform and model; similar-looking remotes may not support voice or Bluetooth functions.
- Replace the remote or contact TCL support if the TV works with another control method but the original remote does not.
Choosing a replacement remote
Identify the TV platform and model before buying. For TCL Roku TVs, Roku’s official options provide a useful compatibility distinction:
- Roku TV Remote, RCC1R: displayed at $9.99 on August 18, 2026; a basic replacement with TV power, volume, mute, streaming, shortcut controls, and two AAA batteries.
- Roku Voice Remote: displayed at $19.99 on August 18, 2026; adds voice search and wireless operation. Roku lists compatibility with all Roku TV models, subject to stated older-device limitations.
- Roku Voice Remote Pro, 2nd edition: displayed at $29.99 on August 18, 2026; adds rechargeable operation, backlit buttons, hands-free or push-to-talk voice controls, and a lost-remote finder. The product page showed a backorder/availability signal, so check current availability.
Prices and availability change. A Roku Players Remote is intended for most Roku players and audio devices and is not the appropriate replacement for a Roku TV; choose a Roku TV Remote instead. See Roku’s Roku TV Remote page and Roku’s remote compatibility information.
For Android TV, Google TV, or Fire TV, prioritize a remote explicitly compatible with the exact TCL model and platform. Do not assume that matching appearance guarantees Bluetooth pairing or voice support.
Quick Recap
How to know you are finished
- The TV responds to directional navigation and selection.
- Power and volume work.
- Voice search works if both the TV and remote support it.
- The remote remains connected after the TV is restarted.
