A “cloudy” TV screen is not necessarily dirty. The symptom may come from fingerprints or cleaning residue, an HDMI or streaming problem, picture settings, normal LCD panel variation, backlight bleed, OLED image retention, or physical damage. Diagnose the cause before attempting a repair: test the TV’s own menus, clean it only with safe materials, change reversible settings, and contact the retailer or manufacturer if the cloudiness remains visible across all sources.
What a cloudy TV screen can look like
“Cloudy” is a description rather than a precise diagnosis. Use the appearance as a clue, not proof of a particular fault.

- Haze across the whole screen: dust, fingerprints, cleaning residue, reflections, unsuitable picture settings, or highly compressed content.
- Large gray or bright patches on dark scenes: LCD uniformity variation, clouding, or dirty-screen effect.
- Bright areas near corners or edges: possible backlight bleed on an LCD/LED television.
- Vertical or horizontal bands during sports and camera pans: panel uniformity problems or dirty-screen effect.
- Fixed white spots: a possible backlight diffuser or panel problem.
- Cloudiness on only one app, HDMI input, or device: likely a source, cable, device, network, or content issue.
- Ghost images on an OLED: possible temporary image retention. Persistent burn-in is a different and more serious problem.
- New marks after wiping: streaking, coating damage, or pressure-related panel damage.
LCD/LED, QLED, and Mini-LED televisions can show dirty-screen effect (DSE): uneven brightness across broad areas that is especially noticeable on gray screens, skies, ice, or camera pans. Clouding usually describes broad hazy or patchy illumination, while backlight bleed is light leakage around an LCD panel’s edges. These are related uniformity symptoms, but they are not interchangeable diagnoses.

First determine whether the cloudiness is on the surface
- Turn the TV off, unplug it, and let it cool.
- Inspect the screen under normal room light from several angles. Reflections can look like hazy patches.
- Wipe lightly with a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth.
- If dry wiping is insufficient and your manufacturer permits it, put a small amount of distilled water on the cloth—not on the screen.
- Let the display dry completely before reconnecting power.
Samsung’s cleaning guidance says not to spray liquid directly onto the screen and warns against window cleaner, solvents, alcohol, benzene, ammonia, acetone, abrasive pads, and paper towels. Sony gives similar OLED/LCD precautions and advises checking chemical products with the manufacturer.
Do not scrub, press, tap, rub aggressively, or massage a cloudy area. TCL specifically warns that pressure can cause additional panel damage. A cloth can remove contamination from the surface; it cannot repair cloudiness inside the panel.
The most useful test: check the TV’s own menus
Open the home screen, settings menu, or built-in picture test. Then compare the result with several sources:

- the TV’s home screen or settings menu;
- the television’s built-in picture test;
- one internal streaming app;
- one HDMI device, such as a console or streaming box;
- a different program or video.
If the cloudiness appears on the menu or picture test, the TV or its display processing is implicated. If the menus are clear but one app, channel, or HDMI device is cloudy, investigate the source, cable, external device, receiver, internet connection, or content first. TCL recommends comparing apps, inputs, content, and the home screen; LG likewise recommends a built-in Picture Test to separate a TV problem from an external signal problem.

Restart the TV and check the connections
- Turn the TV off.
- Unplug it from the wall for at least 60 seconds.
- Disconnect and firmly reconnect HDMI cables.
- Restart the console, cable box, streaming device, receiver, or other source.
- Try another HDMI input and, if possible, another known-good HDMI cable.
- Test a built-in app and the TV’s menu again.
- Install an available firmware update through the manufacturer’s normal support process.
- Run the TV’s picture test.
A firmware update may remove a software or processing fault, but it cannot repair a damaged panel, optical layer, diffuser, or cracked display.

Settings that may reduce LCD or LED clouding
On an LED/LCD, QLED, or Mini-LED TV, try these reversible changes:
- Select Movie, Cinema, or Standard instead of an unusually bright Dynamic mode.
- Reduce Backlight, Brightness, or the equivalent panel-light-output control gradually.
- Reduce or disable aggressive contrast-enhancement features if they make bright and dark patches more obvious.
- Keep ventilation openings unobstructed.
- Recheck the display after it reaches its normal operating temperature.
Samsung’s model-specific guidance recommends Standard or Movie mode, reducing backlight, and checking ventilation. These changes may make uneven illumination less noticeable, particularly in dark scenes, but they do not repair panel uniformity or replace damaged optical layers. Avoid lowering brightness so far that the overall picture becomes worse.
OLED-specific troubleshooting
OLED televisions do not use an LCD backlight. If an OLED shows temporary lines, stains, or ghost images, first check the HDMI cable, external device, network, and streaming source, then run the built-in Picture Test.

Supported OLED models may include Pixel Cleaning, Pixel Refresher, or a similarly named panel-care function. On some current LG models, the path is Settings → All Settings → Support → OLED Care → OLED Panel Care → Pixel Cleaning. Menu names and paths vary by webOS generation, so use the instructions for your exact model. LG says the function may also run automatically after the TV is turned off and may require the television to remain connected to power in standby.
Pixel Cleaning is not a universal screen repair. It is not intended for LCD clouding and will not repair cracked glass, liquid damage, pressure marks, failed electronics, or a defective panel. Do not repeatedly run long cleaning cycles as a general experiment. If a mark remains, photograph it and contact LG or the relevant manufacturer.

What not to do
- Do not spray water or cleaner directly onto the panel.
- Do not use glass cleaner, alcohol wipes, solvents, disinfectants, paper towels, abrasive pads, or “magic eraser” products unless the exact manufacturer instructions for your model explicitly allow them.
- Do not press, massage, tap, or rub patches to redistribute the panel.
- Do not open the television or attempt panel disassembly. Internal power supplies can retain hazardous voltage, and panel replacement is not a practical consumer repair.
- Do not assume a firmware update or OLED cleaning routine can cure physical damage.
When to request warranty service or an exchange
Contact the retailer or manufacturer promptly if:
- the defect is visible on every input and on the TV’s own menus;
- fixed white spots, bands, or patches remain in the same locations;
- the problem is worsening;
- cloudiness appeared after impact, a drop, poor transport, or liquid exposure;
- there are cracks, black blotches, colored liquid-looking areas, unusual heat, smells, or sounds;
- cleaning caused new marks or apparent coating damage.
For a new television, use the retailer’s return or exchange window before experimenting extensively. For a warranty claim, coverage depends on the country, model, purchase date, defect type, accidental damage, and warranty terms. Unauthorized cleaning or service may affect coverage; review the manufacturer’s policy, such as LG’s U.S. TV warranty, for applicable exclusions.

Ask for a written estimate before approving an out-of-warranty panel replacement. A large panel repair may approach the value of the television. Conversely, mild DSE visible only on test patterns may not justify replacement if ordinary viewing is unaffected.
A replacement set is not guaranteed to be perfectly uniform. Panel-to-panel variation exists, and Sony notes that a replacement panel may also contain pixel defects. Pixel-defect thresholds and remedies vary by manufacturer, model, retailer, and region, so check the applicable policy before demanding a particular outcome.
Document the problem for support
Take photographs of the:
- home screen;
- built-in picture test;
- black screen;
- white or light-gray screen;
- ordinary program content where the defect is distracting.
Also record the model and serial number, operating system or software version, purchase date, affected inputs and apps, when the problem began, and whether it changes as the TV warms up or after a restart. A camera can exaggerate banding or clouding, so describe how visible the issue is during normal viewing as well as attaching photographs.
