Construction is underway at Symons Valley Centre in Sage Hill, where the City of Calgary plans to build a 15,000-square-foot public library as part of a wider community development. The library, outdoor commons and multimodal main street are expected to open in mid-2028; that is the City’s current forecast, not a guaranteed date.
Construction status and schedule
The City says construction activity began in mid-June 2026. By its July update, site preparation was complete and excavation and foundation work were in progress. A City release dated September 16, 2026, confirmed that Phase 2 construction was underway. The City expects construction to continue through 2028 and lists mid-2028 as the planned opening for the library, commons and main street. What Phase 2 includes
The library is one part of a broader second phase at Symons Valley Centre. The City’s current project page and September 2026 release describe a 15,000-square-foot library, alongside:
- Underground and surface parking
- An outdoor community commons
- A multimodal main street
- Infrastructure intended to support future phases
The seven-acre, City-owned site is at 251 Sage Hill Boulevard N.W. The development is intended primarily to serve Sage Hill, Kincora, Sherwood, Nolan Hill and Evanston. The City identifies CANA Management Inc. as completing Phase 2. City of Calgary project page

Current library size differs from an earlier estimate
The City’s January 2026 Ward 2 update described an 18,000-square-foot library and anticipated construction starting in the second quarter of 2026. The later City project page and September 16 release both give the current figure as 15,000 square feet, so that is the appropriate size to use for the project as now described by the City. Budget and planned climate measures
The City’s approved budget for Phases 1 and 2 is $43 million, including $2.7 million for sustainability and climate-resilience initiatives. Planned measures include a ground-source heat pump, roof-mounted solar photovoltaic panels, mechanical UV and carbon filters, advanced stormwater management, and additional climate-resilient plantings. How the library fits into the larger site
Phase 2 delivers the library and public-realm elements; the broader site plan extends beyond them. The City lists housing and mixed-use development among later plans, and a transit terminal and Park and Ride for beyond 2030. Future retail services and parcel schedules are not settled by the City: the timing and uses of parcels depend on purchasers. City of Calgary project page
