For most homeowners planning a renovation or checking whether furniture will fit, start with Sweet Home 3D. For repeat professional work or projects involving custom construction details, SketchUp Pro generally justifies its greater cost and learning curve.
The biggest difference: floor-plan-first versus model-first
Sweet Home 3D guides you toward a familiar residential sequence:
#1 Best Overall
- Create or import a floor plan or background image.
- Draw walls and rooms with dimensions and wall thicknesses.
- Add doors, windows, fixtures, and furniture from a searchable catalog.
- Adjust colors, textures, dimensions, positions, and orientations.
- Review the plan and 3D view simultaneously.
- Produce a plan, still image, virtual visit, or video.
That specialization is not simply a sign that Sweet Home 3D is “basic.” It removes many decisions that are irrelevant to a homeowner trying to plan a room. The official feature list emphasizes this combined 2D/3D workflow, along with furniture catalogs, customizable room elements, and photo and video rendering.
SketchUp starts from a different premise: model the thing you need in three dimensions, then organize views and documentation around it. You can absolutely create a house plan or interior in SketchUp, but you typically build the geometry yourself or rely on templates, components, and extensions. That flexibility is valuable when the project moves beyond standard rooms, but it can be unnecessary overhead for a simple furniture layout.
Which is easier for beginners?
Sweet Home 3D usually produces the fastest first useful floor plan. Its tools and interface are organized around walls, rooms, furniture, dimensions, and viewpoints. Because the 2D plan and 3D result update together, a new user can begin planning without first learning a complete theory of 3D modeling.

SketchUp’s basic drawing and Push/Pull tools can also be learned quickly. The more important distinction is what happens after the first tutorial. Reliable, editable SketchUp models require an understanding of:
- Axes and inference behavior.
- Groups and components.
- Tags and visibility control.
- Scenes, camera views, and sections.
- Materials and textures.
- Solid geometry and model hierarchy.
- LayOut and drawing-documentation workflows.
- Extensions and file interoperability.
Choose Sweet Home 3D for a one-off room or renovation layout. Choose SketchUp Pro if you want to develop a long-term 3D modeling skill that can transfer to more varied design and construction work.
Floor plans and architectural layouts
Where Sweet Home 3D works well
Sweet Home 3D is well suited to straight-forward residential planning: wall layouts, room dimensions, door and window positions, furniture clearances, and basic multi-room arrangements. You can import a blueprint or background image and draw over it, which is useful when testing a proposed renovation against an existing plan.
It is particularly effective for answering practical questions such as:
Rank #2
- Will a sectional sofa block the circulation route?
- Can a dining table fit without obstructing a doorway?
- How much clearance is available around a kitchen island?
- How will a new partition affect the rest of the room?
Where SketchUp Pro pulls ahead
SketchUp Pro is more suitable when the plan is part of a detailed three-dimensional design. It can model custom walls, roofs, stairs, cabinets, millwork, exterior massing, site context, and design alternatives. Components make repeated elements reusable, while sections and scenes help communicate the design from controlled viewpoints.
Pro also includes LayOut for 2D documentation and enhanced DWG and IFC interoperability. That makes it more useful when a model must support professional presentations or exchange with other design and construction tools.
Neither application automatically turns a model into permit-ready or construction-ready documentation. Building-code review, structural design, detailed MEP coordination, and licensed architectural or engineering work remain separate responsibilities.
Furniture and interior design
This is Sweet Home 3D’s strongest comparison category. Its residential catalog and direct object customization make it efficient for furniture placement, room proportions, color experiments, circulation studies, and homeowner presentations. You can modify the color, texture, dimensions, location, and orientation of furniture and room elements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSketchUp Pro offers a broader general-purpose ecosystem through 3D Warehouse and an extension ecosystem that the official plan comparison describes as supporting more than 1,000 extensions. It is better when the design includes:
- Exact custom cabinetry.
- Built-in storage and millwork.
- Bespoke furniture.
- Detailed kitchens.
- Manufacturer-specific components.
- Nonstandard room geometry.
- Reusable professional component libraries.
A larger library does not always mean a faster workflow. Downloaded SketchUp models may need to be scaled, oriented, cleaned, simplified, and organized. For “Can my sofa and table fit?” Sweet Home 3D is usually more direct. For “Can I model the exact kitchen and trim package?” SketchUp Pro is the better tool.
3D modeling and custom geometry
SketchUp Pro is the clear winner for custom geometry. Its Push/Pull, Follow Me, groups, components, solid tools, sections, scenes, and extensions support objects that do not fit neatly into a standard furniture-and-room workflow.
That matters for construction-related design. A contractor or designer may need to visualize a custom stair, sloped ceiling, roof intersection, built-in cabinet, fireplace surround, deck, or unusual existing condition. Modeling those elements directly is far easier in SketchUp Pro than attempting to represent them through imported objects or workarounds.

The installed application can export a home to OBJ, but importing and exporting does not give it the same native modeling capabilities as SketchUp.
Rendering and presentations
Sweet Home 3D includes built-in photo and video rendering, with controls for lights, sunlight, time of day, and geographic location. This gives a homeowner a useful visual result without assembling a separate rendering pipeline.
SketchUp’s presentation and visualization capabilities depend more heavily on the selected plan and connected tools. Pro includes the desktop modeler, Web and iPad access where applicable, LayOut, extensions, and the wider SketchUp ecosystem. Some advanced features belong to SketchUp Studio, not Pro. The official comparison lists Studio features such as Revit import, point-cloud workflows, photorealistic visuals, rendered animations, and 360-degree panoramas.
Therefore:
- Choose Sweet Home 3D for simple, self-contained residential presentation.
- Choose SketchUp Pro for a flexible visual workflow built around a detailed model.
- Consider Studio only when its additional scanning, Revit, or advanced visualization features are specifically required.
File formats and interoperability
Sweet Home 3D saves projects in its SH3D format and can export the displayed home to OBJ on desktop. The OBJ export includes accompanying material and texture information. The official user guide states that OBJ export is unavailable in the Online and Mobile versions.
Recommended Free Tools
The installed application supports furniture-import workflows involving formats such as OBJ, DAE, 3DS, and LWS. Imported furniture is available in the installed application but not in the Online version according to the user guide. Registered users can transfer SH3D homes between installed and Online versions, but the editions are not feature-for-feature identical.
SketchUp Pro supports a broader professional exchange workflow. Depending on the plan and platform, the official comparison lists formats including DWG, DXF, DAE, KMZ, 3DS, STL, OBJ, IFC, IFCZIP, PDF, EPS, TIF, FBX, and others. Studio adds specialized imports such as RVT and point-cloud formats including LAS/LAZ, PLY, and E57.
Import support is not the same as lossless round-trip editing. A transfer may lose parametric relationships, tags, materials, lights, cameras, BIM metadata, dimensions, component intelligence, object hierarchy, or curved-surface fidelity. Test the exact exchange with a representative project before basing a business workflow on it.
Platforms, offline use, and hardware
The Sweet Home 3D download page lists desktop versions for Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as browser and mobile offerings. As of August 18, 2026, the downloadable desktop page identified version 7.5, last updated May 5, 2025. Version availability and feature sets can differ by platform.

SketchUp offers a supported desktop modeler for Windows and macOS, plus Web and iPad products. As of August 18, 2026, Trimble’s documentation identified SketchUp 2026 as current and listed 2024, 2025, and 2026 as supported desktop versions. SketchUp desktop requires internet access for installation and subscription authorization, and some features also require an internet connection.
Linux is a decisive factor: Sweet Home 3D has an official Linux desktop download, while SketchUp’s supported desktop requirements focus on Windows and macOS. Browser access may be an option, but it is not identical to having the full Pro desktop workflow.
Sweet Home 3D is generally the safer starting point for modest hardware, although large imported models, high-resolution textures, complex scenes, and demanding renders can still reduce performance. SketchUp’s performance depends on polygon count, visible objects, imported CAD, textures, shadows, styles, extensions, model organization, drivers, and display resolution. Its official requirements recommend a 2 GHz or faster processor and a discrete graphics card for Windows; the new renderer requires DirectX 12 with feature-level 11.0 support. Check the current requirements for the exact release before purchasing hardware.

On August 18, 2026, the official Trimble pricing page displayed SketchUp Pro monthly pricing of $99.99 USD per user per month, excluding taxes and VAT. Official pricing pages have shown differing annual figures and may vary by region, billing period, or page state, so verify the current checkout price before buying. The same official page listed refund windows of 14 days for annual purchases or renewals and 7 days for initial monthly purchases, subject to its terms.
Sweet Home 3D’s free desktop edition is the obvious value choice when it meets the brief. Paid editions may include substantially larger furniture and texture catalogs; the download page describes page-specific catalog counts, including editions with more than 10,000 furniture pieces and roughly 400 textures. Do not assume those counts apply to every free, desktop, online, or mobile edition.

Can you use Sweet Home 3D and SketchUp together?
Yes. A practical workflow is to establish a residential layout in Sweet Home 3D, export the desktop project to OBJ, and bring that geometry into another modeling or rendering application. The Sweet Home 3D guide specifically documents OBJ export for reuse in software such as Blender or Art of Illusion.
Expect cleanup. Check scale, face orientation, materials, texture paths, object hierarchy, polygon count, and whether objects need to be rebuilt as editable SketchUp components. Imported geometry may be useful as reference or context rather than as clean construction geometry. This workflow is also unavailable from Sweet Home 3D Online and Mobile in the same way as desktop OBJ export.
For any imported furniture or texture, check the asset’s license before using it in a commercial presentation or deliverable. Sweet Home 3D’s licensing information notes that rights can differ for imported assets.
Final recommendation
Buy or install Sweet Home 3D when the job is primarily residential floor planning, furniture placement, room visualization, and layout experimentation. It reaches a useful result quickly, works on Linux, offers a free desktop edition, and includes rendering features that are sufficient for many homeowners and DIY projects.
Choose SketchUp Pro when the project demands custom geometry, reusable components, professional 2D documentation, DWG or IFC exchange, extensions, or a model that can grow into broader architectural, construction, fabrication, or landscape work. Its subscription cost and learning curve are justified only when those capabilities will actually be used.
For a simple apartment layout, SketchUp Pro is usually more tool than you need. For a custom stair, detailed built-in, coordinated design package, or repeat professional workflow, Sweet Home 3D is likely to become restrictive. The right choice is determined less by which program has more features than by whether your work begins with placing objects in rooms or building and documenting a complete 3D model.
