What is Shapr3D?
Shapr3D is a native CAD application for iPadOS, macOS, Windows, and Vision Pro. Its main distinction is the combination of direct manipulation and structured CAD. You can push, pull, move, align, and adjust geometry interactively, while still using sketches, constraints, and a history-based feature sequence.
Recommended Free Tools
That makes it particularly useful for product concepts, site-related components, fixtures, brackets, enclosures, and other designs where quickly exploring shape matters. On iPad, Apple Pencil and touch input are central rather than secondary features. Native apps are available from the iPad download page and Windows download page.

Shapr3D can also support design review, visualization, rendering, AR/XR, technical drawings, and manufacturing exports depending on the subscription plan. It is not automatically a complete replacement for every desktop engineering tool: a construction or manufacturing workflow may still require separate CAM, simulation, inspection, or project-management software.
What is Onshape?
Onshape is full-cloud CAD accessed primarily through a browser, with mobile applications also available. Documents are automatically saved, and users can work with Part Studios, Assemblies, Drawings, references, feature history, versions, branches, and merges in one connected environment. Its getting-started documentation explains the document-centered workflow.
For a construction business, this can be valuable when designers, engineers, fabricators, subcontractors, and reviewers work from different locations or devices. Instead of passing around files named “final” and “final-2,” a team can review a shared document, create a version, branch an alternative, compare changes, and merge approved work.

Modeling workflow and learning curve
Shapr3D: faster visual exploration
Shapr3D is likely to feel faster for a first concept, especially when working with a pen or touch interface. Direct manipulation reduces the distance between seeing a design change and making that change. This is an advantage for early design, field adjustments, and communicating a physical idea quickly.

Its simpler-feeling interaction should not be mistaken for a lack of structure. Shapr3D supports parametric history and constraint-based sketching. However, whether it is “easier” depends on the task. A quick bracket or enclosure may be approachable; maintaining a large assembly with many design variants and formal revisions requires a more disciplined workflow.
Onshape: more explicitly engineering-centered
Onshape uses conventional engineering concepts such as sketches, constraints, feature history, Part Studios, Assemblies, derived geometry, and references. It also supports direct editing of imported geometry and custom FeatureScript tools.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Onshape may require more up-front understanding of document structure and references, but that structure pays off when several people need to edit, review, or maintain the same design. For construction teams, the relevant question is not simply which interface is easier. Ask whether the job involves one-off geometry or a design that must be revised, approved, reused, and traced over time.
Collaboration, revisions, and design control
Onshape has the clear advantage when collaboration is part of the CAD task itself. Its capabilities include:
- Multiple users working in the same document.
- Simultaneous editing and visibility of collaborators’ changes.
- Comments and controlled sharing.
- Automatic history and immutable versions.
- Branches for parallel design alternatives.
- Version comparison, merging, restore, and repair workflows.
- Formal release management on higher plans.
These tools can reduce duplicate files and make design changes easier to trace. That matters when a component, connection detail, temporary works item, or fabricated assembly changes after review and the team needs to know what was approved.

Shapr3D is not a collaboration-free product. It provides cloud synchronization, shared team projects on supported plans, contributor access, and browser-based published versions for viewing. Its strength is still the individual designer or small team working locally, then synchronizing and sharing work. Onshape’s collaboration model is more deeply embedded in the CAD document and is better suited to concurrent engineering.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Offline work and connectivity
Shapr3D supports modeling, editing, and exporting offline. Projects can exist locally on the device and synchronize through Shapr3D Cloud when connectivity returns. This is useful on a construction site, during travel, in a factory with restricted connectivity, or in rural locations with unreliable service. The Shapr3D Cloud documentation explains the relationship between local projects and synchronization.
Offline access is not the same as confirmed cloud backup. Before changing devices or relying on a synchronized copy, verify that the project has uploaded successfully. Collaboration and immediate visibility for other team members also depend on synchronization. Licensing or periodic account authentication may be separate from the ability to edit offline.
Onshape’s cloud architecture makes an internet connection central to normal editing. That enables automatic saving, server-side computation, live collaboration, and a continuously current document, but it also creates dependencies on network availability, browser compatibility, account access, and service availability. For a distributed office this may be an acceptable trade-off; for field work without dependable connectivity it can be decisive.
File formats and interoperability
Shapr3D supports formats including Parasolid X_T, STEP, IGES, DWG, DXF, STL, OBJ, and 3MF, alongside native Shapr3D files. Its official supported file types and export documentation should be checked for current plan restrictions.

Onshape supports a broad range of formats, including Parasolid, ACIS, STEP, IGES, STL, JT, GLTF, OBJ, 3MF, Rhino 3DM, PVZ, and DWG/DXF for relevant sketches, faces, drawings, and workflows. Its file-format documentation lists the current support.
The important warning is that exporting is not the same as migrating. A STEP or Parasolid file can transfer solid geometry effectively, but normally will not preserve the original feature tree, constraints, parametric relationships, application-specific metadata, or complete drawing and assembly intelligence. Onshape explicitly documents this limitation for exported files.
Before switching from SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion, or another CAD system, test representative production data rather than a simple cube. Use a multi-body part, complex assembly, thin-wall or sheet-metal component, dimensioned drawing, imported geometry, configurations, colors, materials, threads, and a file that must later return to the original system.
Drawings, manufacturing, rendering, and advanced engineering
Shapr3D Pro is aimed at professional modeling and can provide technical drawings, broader CAD import and export, higher-quality manufacturing output, visualization, real-time product renders, and expanded project capabilities. Enterprise plans add further administration, security, PLM integration, and ecosystem options. Confirm the exact entitlement on the subscription-plan page.
Onshape’s higher commercial plans combine CAD with deeper data-management workflows. The official pricing page describes professional capabilities including company-managed data and release management, and identifies integrated Simulation, Rendering, CAM, and PCB design offerings. The exact module, limits, integrations, and plan requirements should be verified for the manufacturing process you use.

For a designer who creates a part and sends STEP, STL, or DXF files to a fabricator, Shapr3D may be sufficient. For a team managing revisions, approvals, assemblies, part numbering, and connected engineering processes, Onshape Professional is more compelling. Neither should be selected without checking specialist requirements such as CAM postprocessors, structural simulation, complex surfacing, mold design, electrical design, inspection, PLM, or ERP integration.

The official USD pricing pages reviewed for August 16, 2026 showed the following signals. Prices may vary by region, VAT, billing period, app store, promotion, or later plan changes.
| Plan | Displayed price | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Shapr3D Basic | Free | Limited projects, visualization, and exports; basic-resolution 3MF/STL export is identified. |
| Shapr3D Pro | $299 per year, excluding VAT | Unlimited projects and expanded export, drawing, visualization, and team capabilities. |
| Shapr3D Enterprise | Custom | Enterprise administration, security, and integrations. |
| Onshape Free | $0 | Public documents and non-commercial use only. |
| Onshape Standard | $1,500 per user per year | Private commercial CAD with core document and PDM capabilities. |
| Onshape Professional | $2,500 per user per year | Release management, company-managed data, and broader professional workflows. |
| Onshape Enterprise | Custom | Advanced controls, analytics, workflows, and integrations. |
For one commercial user, the displayed Shapr3D Pro price is far below Onshape Standard or Professional. Onshape’s higher cost is justified only if its private cloud documents, collaboration, PDM, release controls, and team administration solve a real business problem. For a five-person team, the displayed annual subscription would be approximately $7,500 for five Standard seats or $12,500 for five Professional seats, before taxes and any licensing details for viewers, contributors, or other users. Confirm current seat definitions before budgeting.
Do not use Onshape Free for client work, proprietary construction details, unreleased inventions, or commercial product development: its documents are public and the plan is non-commercial. Shapr3D Basic may be useful for learning and simple personal projects, but export restrictions can become a practical barrier when sending production files to a supplier.
Which should you choose?
Choose Shapr3D if:
- You design primarily on an iPad.
- Apple Pencil or touch input is central to your workflow.
- You need a native Mac or Windows application.
- You work in locations where internet access is unreliable.
- You are a solo designer, maker, freelancer, or small shop.
- You value rapid concept-to-solid modeling.
- You exchange models through STEP, Parasolid, STL, DXF, or similar formats.
- You need professional features at a comparatively low annual subscription.
- You want strong visualization, AR, or presentation-oriented output.
Choose Onshape if:
- Your team works across offices, sites, and devices.
- You need browser access, including on mixed hardware or Chromebooks.
- Several people must review or edit the same design.
- You need branching, merging, version comparison, restore, or release management.
- You want one cloud source of truth instead of locally managed files.
- You need integrated PDM and company-level controls.
- Your organization accepts per-user annual licensing and cloud dependency.
Scenario-based recommendations
- “I design construction components on an iPad.” Start with Shapr3D, particularly if pen-based modeling and site mobility matter.
- “I am a 3D-printing hobbyist.” Test Shapr3D Basic against its project and export limits. Onshape Free is an alternative for non-commercial work only, but its documents are public.
- “I sell products or accept client work.” Shapr3D Pro is the lower-cost commercial entry based on the displayed prices. Do not put confidential work in Onshape Free.
- “I work with two other engineers.” Onshape becomes more attractive if people need to edit one design concurrently and maintain clear revisions. Shapr3D can work when collaboration is primarily file sharing and review.
- “Our school uses Chromebooks.” Onshape is the natural first option because browser access is central to the product. Both vendors offer education plans; check current eligibility and administration requirements through Onshape Education and Shapr3D’s education information.
- “I work where internet access is unreliable.” Shapr3D’s offline capability is the stronger fit, provided local projects are synchronized before device changes or handoff.
- “We need formal engineering change control.” Favor Onshape Professional or Enterprise after confirming the precise release, numbering, security, and integration requirements.
- “I send models to a CNC shop.” Either may work if the shop accepts your export format. Validate the actual part, tolerances, drawings, and manufacturing handoff—not just whether an export button exists.
- “I need to continue editing native SolidWorks files.” Test a representative import and redesign workflow. Neutral formats generally preserve geometry, not the original feature history.
When neither is the automatic choice
Look beyond both products if you need advanced organic sculpting, specialized mold or surface design, a particular CAM postprocessor, deep compatibility with native SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA, or NX histories, on-premises deployment, permanent licensing, or a specialized simulation, electrical, inspection, PLM, or ERP workflow.
Autodesk Fusion is worth considering for a broader CAD/CAM and manufacturing ecosystem. FreeCAD suits users prioritizing open-source software and local files. SOLIDWORKS remains relevant for conventional desktop mechanical CAD and established industry workflows. Rhino is stronger for NURBS and freeform surfaces, while Plasticity focuses on fast direct industrial-design modeling rather than full PDM and formal engineering control. Verify current licensing and specialist capabilities before choosing any alternative.
A practical selection test
- Model one representative component in each application.
- Edit a dimension after several features depend on it.
- Build or import a realistic assembly.
- Create the drawing or manufacturing output your business actually uses.
- Export to the supplier’s required format and inspect the result.
- Test the workflow with a second user, including comments, revisions, and permissions.
- Repeat the test offline if field work is important.
- Calculate the full annual cost, including seats, training, conversion, hardware, and any separate CAM or simulation software.
That test exposes the expensive failures: broken references, unusable drawings, missing feature history, inadequate revision control, incompatible exports, and an internet dependency that does not match site conditions.
The verdict
Choose Shapr3D when the modeling experience, iPad or native-app workflow, offline capability, and lower solo-commercial cost matter most. Choose Onshape when browser access, simultaneous editing, version control, PDM, and formal engineering change management matter most. For construction teams, the deciding question is whether CAD is primarily an individual design tool or a shared, controlled engineering record.
