The result is a rigid plug—not a universal way to make a glue joint stronger. The commonly described method uses baking soda, not baking powder.
What does baking soda do to superglue?
Cyanoacrylate adhesive cures in the presence of small amounts of moisture on surfaces, according to Permabond’s overview of cyanoacrylate adhesives. In the hobby technique, baking soda serves as gap-filling powder; adding CA glue produces a hard filler. A Starbond tutorial describes the powder as an accelerator and filler and says the resulting plug can be sanded. These descriptions establish the practical result, not a universal strength increase or a guaranteed cure time.
This is most relevant to a small repair where a rigid filler is useful. It does not replace a close-fitting adhesive joint, and the finished material may be brittle. Whether it holds depends on the materials, the particular adhesive, and the forces the repair will face.
Baking soda is not baking powder
The cited technique specifies baking soda, whose chemical name is sodium bicarbonate (sodium hydrogen carbonate, NaHCO₃). Baking powder is a different product and is not established as an equivalent substitute for this method. Nor should “soda” be treated as a precise chemical name: ANSES’s May 2025 chemical-product guidance distinguishes sodium hydrogen carbonate from caustic soda, soda ash, and sodium percarbonate.

When this filler is—and is not—a good choice
Consider it for a small, rigid gap
The technique is intended to fill a gap and create a hard plug. It may suit a small hobby repair when the bonded materials are compatible with the chosen CA adhesive and the repair does not need to flex.
Avoid relying on it for demanding repairs
South Dakota Woodturners’ specialist guidance describes CA bonds as brittle and relatively weak in shear. That makes this approach a poor choice for a safety-critical or structural repair, a part exposed to repeated impact or flex, a high-heat application, or a joint that must contain liquid. The sources do not establish a strength rating for the baking soda mixture.

Check the adhesive’s material compatibility
Compatibility varies by formula. For example, Henkel’s U.S. page for Loctite Super Glue Liquid Professional lists materials it bonds and says that particular product does not bond polyethylene, polypropylene, PTFE, silicone, foam rubber, polystyrene foams, glass, or pure bone china. Those exclusions apply to that formula; they should not be generalized to every cyanoacrylate adhesive. Check the current label and product information for the glue you have.
Heat, vapors, and handling precautions
South Dakota Woodturners warns that combining baking soda and CA glue is very exothermic and can release noxious gas. Its specialist guidance advises good ventilation and a face shield. Follow the specific adhesive’s label and safety data sheet as well, since products and instructions differ. Avoid making a large mass of the mixture, and do not let glue contact skin or clothing.

This warning concerns cyanoacrylate handling; ANSES does not present it as a test of the baking soda technique. Keep the adhesive away from fabric and protect your eyes and face while working.

| Repair need | Approach to consider | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Bonding close-fitting surfaces | Use a compatible CA adhesive according to its label. | Check the exact formula’s material list and instructions. |
| Filling a small gap with a rigid plug | The baking soda and CA technique. | The result can be brittle; heat and vapor precautions matter. |
| Accelerating cure without adding gap filler | A dedicated CA activator may be an alternative; Permabond describes activators for exposed adhesive and certain difficult curing conditions. | An activator is not the same as a gap-filling powder and may not suit every adhesive or substrate. |
For close-fitting repairs, the Loctite Professional product page gives product-specific directions of approximately one drop per square inch and pressing for 15–30 seconds. Those directions apply to that adhesive’s ordinary bonding use, not as a recipe or set-time claim for a baking soda mixture.
