First identify the fastener shape, then check whether a wrench, socket, or drill can fit and move without slipping. No extractor works for every geometry.
Identify what is stripped before choosing a tool
“Stripped bolt” can mean several different problems. An externally rounded hex head needs a tool that grips its outside. A damaged internal drive needs a different extractor and often a centered pilot hole. An exposed stud calls for a compact stud-gripping tool; a stud broken flush may leave too little material for that approach.
- Rounded outside of the head: look for a wrench insert or extractor socket that can bite the head.
- Damaged internal drive: consider a screw-style extractor only if there is room to drill accurately and the product is intended for that fastener.
- Exposed stud: check whether a small stud extractor fits the stud and surrounding space.
- Broken flush: do not assume an exposed-stud tool will work; the cited options do not establish a general method for flush breaks.
IRWIN distinguishes its spiral-flute extractor sockets for rounded-off bolts from other extraction situations in its BOLT-GRIP product guidance, while Milwaukee describes a screw-extractor set for screws and bolts with damaged drives in its product information.
Choose by fastener shape and the space around it
Externally rounded head with little side clearance
A thin wrench insert may help when a socket cannot fit over the head but an ordinary wrench can still engage the insert and swing through a useful arc. GEARWRENCH describes its Bolt Biter wrench inserts for damaged fasteners in tight or confined spaces and lists compatibility with static, ratcheting, and open-end wrenches. GEARWRENCH says the inserts provide “up to 70% more access” than traditional extraction solutions. That is the manufacturer’s comparison, repeated in its product announcement, not an independent measurement. More access does not remove the need for enough wrench swing or a secure bite.
Rounded head with room above it for a socket
A spiral-flute extractor socket is an option if the socket can fit over the head and its drive can be turned in the available space. IRWIN says the reverse spiral flutes are designed to grip rounded-off bolts and lists use with hand ratchets, impact wrenches, air ratchets, and several wrench or plier types. Confirm the specific extractor size and follow its directions; listed compatibility does not mean every drive is suitable for every fastener or confined assembly. The maker’s BOLT-GRIP guidance describes the product range.

Small exposed stud in a narrow area
Mayhew describes its 1/4-inch-drive small stud extractor for hard-to-reach seized, stripped, or broken studs and bolts. Its stated adjustment range is 5/64–9/32 inch (2–7 mm); the tool can be driven by a 1/4-inch square drive, a 13 mm socket, or a 1/2-inch wrench. These are the manufacturer’s specifications, not a guarantee that it will fit a particular obstruction or stud. Check the actual clearance and size before choosing it, using Mayhew’s product information.
Damaged internal drive or screw-like fastener
A screw extractor may need a centered pilot hole, so assess whether a drill can approach the fastener straight and stay aligned. Milwaukee lists its cited set for No. 4–No. 24 screws and No. 10, 1/4, 5/16, and 3/8 inch bolts. For this product, Milwaukee specifies reverse-only operation for both drilling and extraction: drilling on the designated side at high speed and extraction on the other side at low speed. Those directions are specific to the cited Milwaukee tool; do not apply them to another extractor. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and listed range before starting.

Check access, fit, and the part you need to preserve
A tight space affects both whether the tool fits and whether you can turn it. Before committing, compare the fastener and work area against these practical constraints:
- Overhead clearance: can a socket sit fully over the head, with its drive attached?
- Side clearance and swing: can a wrench engage the fastener and move through enough arc to turn it?
- Drill alignment: if the extractor requires a pilot hole, can the drill approach centrally without being deflected by nearby parts?
- Size and system: match the extractor to the actual SAE or metric fastener size and the maker’s supported range.
- Drive method: use only a wrench, ratchet, or powered tool allowed by that product’s instructions and workable in the available clearance.
- Consequences of damage: consider whether the fastener, surrounding threads, or the part itself must be preserved. Removal does not establish that the bolt or threads will be reusable.
Use heat only after considering the surroundings
Heat is not a default first step for an unspecified confined assembly. Fuel, wiring, hoses, plastics, paint, nearby components, and penetrant vapors can change the risk. AutoZone’s guide advises ventilation when using penetrant or heat, but that general guidance does not establish a safe heating procedure for a particular construction component or worksite. Do not apply heat unless the material, nearby hazards, and applicable instructions have been assessed; cutting or welding likewise should not be treated as casual first moves. When a tight-space extraction is not straightforward
If no tool can seat securely, a wrench cannot move through a useful arc, or a drill cannot stay aligned, forcing the first tool that fits can worsen the damage. Reassess access and fastener geometry before proceeding. If the stud is broken flush, the surrounding part is valuable, or damage to nearby threads would be costly, the products described above do not establish a guaranteed extraction method; the appropriate next step depends on the specific assembly and may require specialist repair.
