Clean a front-load washer’s rubber door seal using the chemical and dilution approved in your washer’s manual, then rinse and dry the gasket thoroughly. Manufacturer instructions differ: Whirlpool describes diluted chlorine bleach for stubborn stains, while LG’s cited guidance uses diluted oxygen bleach. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or another cleaner. Keeping the gasket dry between loads helps prevent moisture and residue from building up again.
Where mold and residue collect in a washer seal
The rubber gasket around a front-load washer door has folds that can trap moisture and residue. Pull back the lip gently and inspect the creases, especially around the bottom of the seal. Check for trapped lint or other debris as well. Do not tug hard on the gasket or use a tool that could puncture it.
Choose a cleaning method approved for your washer
There is no single cleaner or dilution that applies to every washer. Check the owner’s manual for gasket-cleaning instructions before applying a chemical. The manufacturers’ guidance cited here differs:

These are manufacturer instructions, not a head-to-head test of cleaners. Do not assume one maker’s chemical or dilution is suitable for another brand or model. Use only one approved product at a time, and follow its directions for handling and rinsing.

Clean the gasket without damaging it
- Prepare safely. Ventilate the room and put on rubber gloves. Use only the cleaner and dilution approved by the washer’s manual.
- Apply to the seal. Use a soft cloth or sponge to work the approved solution into the gasket folds, including the lower section. Avoid pouring cleaner into the machine unless the manual specifically directs it.
- Allow the directed contact time. For the Whirlpool method above, the stated time is about five minutes. Follow your model’s instructions if they differ.
- Wipe and rinse. Gently scrub; do not use an abrasive pad or sharp implement. Wipe away cleaner as directed. Whirlpool specifies a warm-water wipe to rinse its solution.
- Dry thoroughly. Use a clean, soft towel to remove moisture from the gasket and creases, then leave the door open until the seal is dry.
Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or any other cleaner. Mixing can produce dangerous fumes. If you used another product, do not layer bleach over it; follow the product label and washer manual before switching cleaners. Clorox’s washer-cleaning safety guidance.
Distinguish gasket cleaning from a tub-clean cycle
A gasket wipe targets residue on the rubber seal. If the washer also smells musty, the odor may call for a separate tub-cleaning procedure, not a stronger gasket chemical. Use only the cycle and cleaner allowed by the washer’s manual:

- GE Appliances: Its odor guidance allows mild detergent, diluted bleach, or diluted vinegar on the gasket. For some models without a BasketClean cycle, it describes running an empty heavy/cotton cycle with one cup of bleach or a purpose-made washer cleaner. These cycle directions are model-dependent; do not combine those products or assume the instructions fit another washer. GE Appliances’ front-load odor guidance.
- Samsung: Use the Self Clean/Pure cycle if available, or consult the manual for the recommended cycle. Samsung says a washer cleaner designed for washers may help if odors persist. A tub cleaner is not established as a direct treatment for stains on the gasket. Samsung’s washer-cleaning support.
Keep moisture from building up again
- After a load, wipe visible water from the gasket folds and leave the door open so air can circulate.
- Where practical, ventilate the detergent dispenser too; moisture can linger there as well.
- Follow the washer maker’s routine-cleaning schedule. LG recommends monthly gasket cleaning in its cited guidance; use a different interval if your model’s manual says so.
What if the dark marks will not scrub off?
Persistent dark staining alone does not establish whether active mold remains. There is no universal stain-versus-growth test in the cited manufacturer guidance, so avoid repeated or stronger chemical applications simply to chase discoloration. Inspect the gasket for tears, cracks, deformation, or other damage. If cleaning does not resolve the concern, consult the washer’s model-specific service guidance or a qualified service provider; a repair or replacement seal is a contingent option when inspection and troubleshooting indicate a problem, not a default next step. iFixit’s door-boot seal repair guide.
