Straightedge Guide for a Circular Saw and Router: Compatibility and Choices

A straightedge guide can work with a circular saw or trim router only when the tool’s base and blade or bit clear the guide. Check compatibility, cut length, and workflow before choosing.

A straightedge guide can help a handheld circular saw or router follow a straight line, but one guide will not fit every tool. The Kreg KMA4500 is a cross-tool option for compatible circular saws, jigsaws, and trim routers; check the tool’s base geometry, the guide’s limits, and the length of your cut before choosing a system.

How a straightedge guide works

A straightedge guide is a reference surface held to the workpiece. The tool’s base rides alongside that surface as you make the cut. For a circular saw or router, the key question is whether the base and blade or bit can travel beside the guide without interference while keeping the cut on the intended line.

Kreg describes its KMA4500 Straight Edge Guide for circular saws, jigsaws, and trim routers. The manufacturer lists a four-foot cutting capacity and describes its product as an approachable way to break down sheet goods; that is product-page copy, not an independently measured performance result. Will the Kreg guide fit your saw or router?

Kreg’s compatibility FAQ gives specific clearance criteria for its Straight Edge Guide. Treat these as Kreg’s requirements for that guide, not as universal dimensions for every straightedge system. Verify the measurements on the exact tool and consult its manual before cutting. Kreg Straight Edge Guide, Crosscut Station, and Portable Crosscut FAQs.

  • Trim router: Kreg specifies 1–5.5 inches between the router bit and the edge of the baseplate, and says the router needs its base plate.
  • Other tools: Do not assume compatibility from the brand or tool category alone. Check the particular tool’s base shape, clearances, and mounting or clamping arrangement.

Kreg says its Straight Edge Guide is intended for straight cuts at 90 degrees from an end or edge. For angled cuts, it recommends the Accu-Cut system instead.

Choose guide length to match the cut

The standard Kreg KMA4500 is listed for cuts up to four feet. If your work exceeds that capacity, Kreg lists a two-foot extension section and an XL guide for material up to eight feet. Capacity is the manufacturer’s stated limit; confirm the requirements for your setup and workpiece in the current product information and manual. Kreg’s product page.

Which guide workflow suits the cut?

Kreg describes three different ways to reference and guide a circular saw. They are not interchangeable just because each can help produce a straight cut. Choose based on where the guide references the workpiece and whether the cut runs across a sheet, parallel to an edge, or at an angle. These descriptions are from Kreg, not independent comparative testing. Kreg’s comparison of circular saw cutting guides.

Guide How Kreg describes the reference Intended workflow
Straight Edge Guide Guide edge aligned to the desired cut Straight cuts in sheet goods
Rip-Cut References the workpiece edge Continuous edge-guided rips up to 24 inches wide
Accu-Cut Track-guided setup on the sheet Cuts anywhere on the sheet, including angled cuts

For a router, distinguish a cross-tool straightedge from a router edge guide. Bosch’s PR102 is a model-specific palm-router attachment—not a universal straightedge or circular-saw guide. Bosch lists compatibility with the PR10E, PR20EVS, and GKF125CE routers and compatible bases. It adjusts up to 3-5/8 inches in from the workpiece edge and is described for tasks such as edge forming with bits without bearings, slots, and grooves. Confirm fit and setup for your specific Bosch model in the manufacturer’s information. Bosch PR102 Router Attachments.

Kreg Rip-Cut Circular Saw Guide, Cuts up to 48" Wide, KMA2685.
  • Saw Guide Compatibility: This saw guide turns your circular saw into a precision edge-guided tool; works best with a regular (side-blade) circular saw, corded or cordless, that has a blade guard or base that allows the sled to clamp securely
  • Woodworking Tools: Universal sled holds guide rail and edge guide, making the circular saw guide portable; not ideal for saws with plastic upper blade guard because guard might interfere with the sled clamping or alignment
  • Versatile Carpenter Tools: Works for left- or right-bladed saws and users; please note, this guide does not work with worm drive saws, as the base or motor housing tends to interfere with the sled’s ability to sit flat and clamp properly
  • Accessible Workshop Accessories: Large handle on the edge guide maintains contact with the material;, this saw guide is not ideal for saws with bulky or odd shape guards that prevent a flat fit with the sled plate
  • Premium Kreg Tools: We offer products that help woodworkers close the gap between idea and outcome

Set up the guide and workpiece carefully

  1. Confirm the tool and guide match. Check the blade or bit clearance, baseplate, and any model-specific limits against the current guide and tool instructions.
  2. Lay out the cut. Align the guide with the intended cut line, accounting for the blade or bit’s position relative to the base edge.
  3. Secure the guide and workpiece. Kreg’s KMA4500 product page lists an adjustable GripMaxx clamp, aluminum guide rails, connector bars, cutline indicator arms, and a handle. Follow the current manual for clamping, alignment, and safe operation.
  4. Check the travel path. Make sure the base can ride alongside the guide for the full cut and the workpiece is supported as directed by the tool and guide manuals.
  5. Make the cut according to the manuals. Kreg’s linked owner’s manual warns users to read and follow its instructions and safety precautions. Use the current manual linked from Kreg’s product page, along with the tool manufacturer’s instructions.

When a shared straightedge is not the right answer

  • The saw misses Kreg’s stated criteria: Look for a guide specifically compatible with that saw rather than assuming the KMA4500 will work.
  • The cut is angled: Kreg points users to Accu-Cut for angled cuts.
  • The task is edge-parallel ripping: Kreg positions Rip-Cut for continuous edge-guided ripping within its stated 24-inch width.
  • The router task uses an edge attachment: A router-specific guide such as Bosch PR102 may suit compatible Bosch palm routers, but it does not substitute for a circular-saw guide.
  • The cut exceeds the guide length: Consider Kreg’s extension or XL option only after checking the intended assembly and the cut’s length against the manufacturer’s capacity.
