In the simple spacer-based design described by WOOD Magazine, four spacers set the groove inset while rails guide the router. The key measurement is the distance from the router subbase edge to the bit center.
What an adjustable juice jig does
A juice groove catches liquid near the perimeter of a cutting board. The jig creates a repeatable router path around the board: rails guide the router, spacers locate those rails, and clamps hold the arrangement in place. WOOD Magazine describes its jig as a way to rout consistently positioned grooves in cutting boards.
Size the spacer-based jig
Use the router and bit you intend to use for the groove; the spacer calculation depends on their actual geometry.
- Measure the router offset. Measure from the edge of the router subbase to the center of the bit.
- Choose the groove inset. Decide how far the groove should sit inward from the cutting-board edge.
- Calculate spacer width. Subtract the desired inset from the subbase-edge-to-bit-center measurement. Cut four scrapwood spacers to that width.
This rule applies to the cited WOOD Magazine arrangement. Measure carefully and check the setup on scrap before routing the board: the resulting groove position depends on the router, bit, rails, and spacer fit.

Set up and rout the groove
- Place the four spacers against the cutting-board edges at the corners.
- Position the MDF guide rails against the spacers and snug them into place.
- Use corner clamps to hold the rails together, and secure the workpiece appropriately.
- Rout clockwise while keeping the router against the rails, as WOOD Magazine specifies.
Follow the router manufacturer’s operating and safety instructions, and make sure the board and jig are secured before routing. The jig directions are not a substitute for the safety guidance for your particular router.
Other jig designs and bit choices
Not every juice-groove jig uses the same construction. Walker’s Woodworks describes a separate plywood-and-rails approach, with a bowl-and-tray bit and a layout method based on measuring from the board edge to the router-base edge. Those details belong to that setup; they should not be combined with the WOOD Magazine spacer formula as if they were one universal design.

Choose a bit profile that produces the groove you want and a shank that fits your router collet. The cited commercial listing specifies a core-box bit, while the DIY account references a bowl-and-tray bit; the sources do not establish a single required profile for every jig.

A retailer listing for the MLCS 20012 Adjustable Juice Groove Jig describes aluminum rails for workpieces up to 23.5 × 23.5 inches and says it is intended for a plunge router. The listing says the kit includes securing guides, hold-down tabs, a 1/2-inch core-box bit with a 1/4-inch shank, and a 5/8-inch brass guide bushing. These are retailer listing claims, not independently verified performance findings; confirm current specifications and compatibility with manufacturer documentation before buying.

When evaluating a commercial jig against a shop-built one, compare the details that determine whether it fits your work and router:
- Maximum board dimensions and adjustment range
- Rail rigidity and how the board or jig is held in place
- Router compatibility, including whether a plunge router is required
- Whether a suitable bit and guide bushing are included, and whether their shank and dimensions match your router setup
