Yes—biodiesel is being tested in Oman construction equipment, but the project is still a feasibility pilot rather than a fleet-wide rollout. International contractor STRABAG and fuel company Wakud have begun a trial of B7, a diesel blend containing up to 7% biodiesel, in a Caterpillar 966GC wheel loader. The planned test will run for about three months under two-shift operating conditions and use an estimated 27,400 litres of fuel. Its results will determine whether B7 can deliver dependable productivity, acceptable maintenance requirements and compatible engine performance on an active construction site.
What is STRABAG testing with Wakud?
The Oman Observer reported on 21 October 2026 that STRABAG and Wakud started a project to assess the technical and operational feasibility of B7 biodiesel in heavy construction machinery. The trial begins with one Caterpillar 966GC wheel loader, allowing the companies to monitor the machine before considering other equipment.

How long will the Oman biodiesel pilot run, and how much fuel will it use?
The planned programme lasts approximately three months and is designed around two operating shifts. STRABAG estimates that the trial will consume 27,400 litres of B7 fuel. That is a projected pilot volume, not a measured result from completed operations.

What will STRABAG measure during the trial?
The pilot is intended to show whether B7 can be integrated without reducing productivity or undermining equipment reliability. The reported evaluation areas are:

These measurements matter because a lower-carbon fuel is only useful to a contractor if machines remain available, productive and supportable. STRABAG estimates that approximately 50% of its construction-equipment fleet in Oman could potentially be suitable for B7. “Potentially suitable” is an initial fleet estimate, not an approval to refuel every machine. Any expansion depends on the pilot findings, individual machinery compatibility and a reliable supply of fuel that consistently meets quality requirements.

Equipment managers would need to check manufacturer guidance, engine and fuel-system specifications, warranty conditions, storage and handling controls, and the ability of local suppliers to provide on-specification B7. A fleet percentage cannot substitute for those machine-level checks.
Will the project cut construction emissions?
The project is designed to help reduce construction’s carbon footprint and support Oman’s energy-transition ambitions, including the country’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050. STRABAG has cited construction and buildings as responsible for approximately 38% of global carbon dioxide emissions, although the Oman Observer account does not independently attribute that figure to an underlying global study.
The report does not publish a measured emissions reduction from this pilot. The climate outcome will depend on the biodiesel’s source and lifecycle emissions, the blend actually delivered, fuel consumption, and the accounting method used. Until those inputs and results are released, B7 should be described as a potential emissions-reduction measure—not proof of a specific percentage reduction.

How does this pilot fit STRABAG’s wider sustainability programme?
STRABAG Group reports more than 200 innovation projects and 450 sustainability projects internationally. Its 2023–2030 reduction pathway targets a 42% cut in absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and a 25% cut in Scope 3 emissions by 2030. The Oman fuel trial is one practical test within that broader effort, focused on equipment that normally depends on diesel at construction sites.
STRABAG’s European operations already have experience with B7 and HVO, according to the report. That experience provides context, but it is not an Oman performance result: local fuel supply, climate, storage, equipment mix and site conditions can change the outcome.

The accessible report provides no completed fuel-consumption figures, engine-test data, maintenance findings, measured emissions reduction, cost comparison or final decision. It also does not establish that every Caterpillar 966GC configuration, or every other machine in the estimated 50% of potentially suitable equipment, is approved for B7. Those gaps are normal for a pilot that has only been announced and started.

The immediate lesson is to treat B7 as a controlled fuel-transition project. A responsible deployment plan would begin with manufacturer confirmation, a defined baseline using conventional diesel, fuel-quality documentation, operating and maintenance logs, and a clear stop or escalation procedure if reliability changes. Results should be judged on total operating performance—not fuel consumption alone—because an apparent fuel saving is of little value if downtime or maintenance costs rise.

Is B7 the same as biodiesel sold at any fuel station?
No. B7 describes the maximum biodiesel content of the blend, while actual quality, feedstock and compliance depend on the supplier and applicable fuel specification. Construction operators still need documentation showing that delivered fuel meets the required standard and equipment guidance.
Can contractors in Oman switch an entire fleet to B7 immediately?
