Woodpeckers Damaging Your House? A Builder’s Guide to Stopping the Pecking and Fixing the Siding

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a woodpecker is pecking your house, act the same day if you can. The fastest humane approach is to identify why the bird is pecking, place moving reflective deterrents directly at the attacked spot, temporarily cover or exclude the surface, inspect the wall for insects or moisture damage, and repair any holes before they become a water-entry point.

On our exterior repair jobs, woodpecker damage usually falls into one of four buckets: territorial drumming, insect foraging, cavity nesting or roosting, and acorn storage. The fix depends on which one you have. A bird hammering a metal chimney cap at 6:30 a.m. in spring is a different problem than neat holes in cedar siding under a second-story gable.

Native woodpeckers in the United States are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so the right solution is prevention, exclusion, repair, and humane deterrence. Do not trap, poison, shoot, or disturb active nests without understanding the law and permit requirements. In practical homeowner terms: discourage the bird early, keep it out of the wall, and fix the building conditions that made the house attractive.

First, Figure Out Why the Woodpecker Is Pecking

Before buying devices or patching holes, spend 10 minutes observing the pattern. Write down the time of day, surface, sound, hole shape, season, and whether the bird returns to one exact location. That information tells you whether you are dealing with communication, food, nesting, or a siding weakness.

Rapid drumming usually means territory or mating

Woodpeckers drum to communicate, especially in late winter and spring. They often choose loud surfaces: gutters, metal vents, chimney caps, downspouts, fascia metal, or thin resonant siding. Drumming is usually rapid, rhythmic, and repeated from the same perch. The bird may leave little or no hole damage.

The goal here is to make that exact location unattractive and less resonant. Hang reflective scare tape, Mylar strips, shiny pinwheels, or fluttering streamers within a few inches of the drumming spot. If the bird is drumming on metal, a contractor can sometimes quiet the surface by tightening loose fasteners, adding backing, or replacing a resonant cap or trim detail.

Random holes may mean insects, rot, or soft wood

Foraging damage looks less organized. You may see clusters of exploratory holes, chipped paint, or torn siding fibers. Woodpeckers can hear or sense insect activity behind siding and trim, but they also investigate soft, water-damaged wood even when the insect issue is secondary.

Pay attention to older cedar, deteriorated fascia, neglected trim, open butt joints, failed caulk, and siding close to rooflines or splash zones. If the wood is soft enough for a screwdriver to sink in, the bird is not the root problem. The exterior envelope needs repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large neat holes can mean nesting or roosting

A round or oval hole that keeps getting deeper may be the start of a nesting or roosting cavity. Nesting is more common in spring and early summer, while roosting can happen in colder months. These holes are often placed high on gables, under eaves, in corner boards, or in thick trim where the bird can create a protected cavity.

If an active nest is present, control measures may need to wait until the young birds have permanently left. Depending on the species and region, that often means around midsummer. When in doubt, call a licensed wildlife-control professional or your state wildlife agency before touching the nest or closing the opening.

Rows of small holes may be sapsucker damage

Sapsuckers commonly drill orderly rows of small holes in trees, but similar patterns can appear on some exterior materials. On houses, repeated small holes on wood siding or trim should still trigger a close inspection for finish failure, insects, and moisture. The repair plan is similar: deter, inspect, patch, prime, paint, and protect.

Stop Active Pecking Immediately

Woodpecker control works best when it starts early. Once a bird establishes a drumming site or begins a cavity, it may return repeatedly. The first goal is not a perfect permanent repair. The first goal is to interrupt the habit before the hole gets bigger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Put deterrents directly on the attacked area

Location matters. Reflective tape hanging on a fence 30 feet away rarely solves a siding problem. Place deterrents over, above, or immediately beside the attacked surface. If the bird is hitting a second-story gable corner, the deterrent needs to be at that gable corner.

Good low-cost options include reflective scare tape, Mylar streamers, shiny windsocks, aluminum pie pans, balloons with reflective eyes, and spinning reflectors. Expect to spend about $10 to $40 for DIY materials. Use several pieces so they move in different directions in the wind.

Change the setup every few days during active pecking. Move the strips, swap in a spinner, change the angle, or add a temporary hanging panel. Stationary decoys and fake owls often lose effectiveness once the bird realizes nothing changes.

Use temporary exclusion where the bird keeps returning

If deterrents do not work within a few days, physically block access to the exact surface. For a small area, that may mean temporary plastic sheeting, hardware cloth, bird netting, or a smooth panel fastened over the damaged section. Leave an air gap where possible so the bird cannot simply peck through the covering into the same cavity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For siding, trim, fascia, or gables, we typically think in terms of surface protection first, permanent repair second. A temporary patch can stop the behavior while you schedule proper siding work. Just do not leave a water-trapping cover in place for months. Temporary exclusion should shed water, allow drying, and avoid trapping moisture against wood.

Avoid sticky repellents and harmful methods

Sticky gels and tacky repellents can collect dirt, stain siding, and create feather problems for birds. They are also miserable to remove from painted trim. Avoid poisons, traps, shooting, or nest disturbance. Native woodpeckers are federally protected migratory nongame birds, and lethal control is a permit issue, not a normal homeowner tactic.

Inspect the Wall Before You Patch the Holes

Woodpecker holes are sometimes a symptom of a bigger exterior problem. Before filling anything, inspect the wall like a builder would.

Check the attacked area and at least 3 to 6 feet around it. Look for cracked paint, swollen trim, dark staining, punky wood, open miters, failed caulk, insect frass, sawdust, carpenter ant trails, soft cedar, loose siding, and gaps at fascia or corner boards. Probe suspect wood gently with an awl or screwdriver. Sound wood resists the tool. Rotten wood crushes, flakes, or feels spongy.

If the damage is near a roofline, inspect nearby flashing, gutters, kickout flashing, and drip edges. A small leak at a roof-wall intersection can soften trim enough to invite insects and bird damage. Patching the visible hole without fixing the leak just gives you a cleaner-looking failure.

When to bring in a pest inspection

Call a pest professional if you see live insects, repeated foraging holes, frass, hollow-sounding wood, or damage spreading along the same wall. Carpenter ants, termites, carpenter bees, and other wood-associated insects can make siding and trim attractive to woodpeckers. Treatment should be based on confirmed activity, not guesswork.

A pest inspection is also worthwhile when the bird returns after several repairs. If the wall keeps attracting foraging behavior, something inside the assembly may still be drawing attention.

Repair Woodpecker Holes the Right Way

A woodpecker hole is an opening in the building envelope. Treat it like one. A cosmetic smear of filler may look fine from the ground, but it can fail if the cavity remains damp, unprimed, or poorly sealed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Small holes in sound painted wood

For a few small holes in sound siding or trim, a careful DIY repair is reasonable. Typical material cost is about $25 to $150 for exterior filler or epoxy, sandpaper, primer, paint, caulk, disposable tools, and cleaning supplies.

Start by confirming the wood is dry and solid. Remove loose fibers and debris. For shallow holes, use an exterior-rated wood filler or epoxy patching compound. For deeper cavities, use a two-part exterior epoxy system that can bridge voids without shrinking. Sand it flush after cure, spot-prime the patch, caulk only the joints that are meant to be sealed, and repaint the full board or a logical break line so the repair does not flash.

Prime bare wood before finish paint. This is especially important on cedar, fascia, corner boards, and exposed end grain. Bare patched areas absorb finish differently, and unprimed repairs fail faster under sun and rain.

Larger holes, soft trim, and repeated damage

If the wood is soft, split, wet, or repeatedly attacked, replacement is usually better than filling. Replace the affected board or siding section, correct the water source, and upgrade the vulnerable detail if needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For cedar or wood-sided homes with repeat damage, consider localized upgrades at gables, chimney chases, fascia returns, and corner boards. Fiber cement, PVC trim, metal flashing, smoother painted surfaces, and tighter trim details can reduce future gripping points and cavity-starting areas. This does not mean the whole house needs new siding. Often, the smart repair is a targeted material change in the exact zone that keeps getting hit.

Do not trap moisture behind the repair

One common mistake is sealing the face while leaving the wall wet behind it. If the hole exposed sheathing, insulation, housewrap, or a wall cavity, the assembly may need to dry before final repair. On larger repairs, the weather-resistive barrier should be lapped correctly, damaged sheathing replaced, and siding reinstalled with proper clearances.

Good exterior repair is boring in the best way: dry substrate, sound material, correct flashing, sealed end grain, compatible primer, finish paint or stain, and no open path for water.

Best Long-Term Deterrents and Exterior Upgrades

The most reliable long-term method is physical exclusion. Visual deterrents help interrupt behavior, but exclusion changes access. Where the look is acceptable, netting, hardware cloth, smooth panels, metal flashing, or plastic sheathing can protect the targeted surface.

Reflective movement

Use reflective movement as the first response. It is inexpensive, fast, and often effective when installed immediately. Place strips directly at the damage, allow them to move freely, and refresh the arrangement every few days while activity continues.

Do not rely on one fake owl sitting on the same roof edge for a month. Birds habituate to objects that never move, never threaten, and never change.

Netting and hardware cloth

Bird netting can work well under eaves, on gables, and around localized wall sections if it is installed taut enough to avoid tangles and far enough off the surface to prevent pecking through. Common installations hold netting about 3 inches or more away from the siding, depending on the area and framing points.

Hardware cloth or metal mesh can protect small, hidden, or utility areas. Use corrosion-resistant fasteners and avoid creating water traps. Any penetration through siding or trim should be sealed appropriately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Flashing and material changes

Smooth metal or plastic flashing can protect narrow trim, fascia returns, and corner details. On high-visibility elevations, we prefer solutions that look intentional: replacing damaged wood trim with PVC, adding properly detailed metal caps, or using fiber cement in repeat-damage zones.

Siding texture matters. Rough-sawn cedar and soft weathered wood are easier for birds to grip and excavate than smoother, well-painted surfaces. Maintaining paint or stain is not just cosmetic; it hardens the surface, sheds water, and reduces the conditions that attract insects.

What Woodpecker Damage Costs to Fix in 2026

Costs vary because access and substrate drive the job. A first-floor trim patch is not the same project as a high cedar gable with rot behind the siding. Use the numbers below as planning ranges, then get a local quote for anything high, wet, rotten, or structurally involved.

Item Typical 2026 Cost What Changes the Price
DIY reflective deterrents $10-$40 Number of attack points, height, wind exposure, replacement after weathering
DIY patching for a few small wood holes $25-$150 Paint matching, hole depth, primer and paint needs, ladder access
Professional small siding or trim repair $100-$1,500 Height, siding type, hole count, rot, water intrusion, color matching
Wood siding repair benchmark About $4-$13 per sq. ft.; small holes can start near $100, larger sections can reach $1,500 Extent of replacement, profiles, finish work, sheathing condition
Vinyl siding repair About $283-$1,089 national average range Panel availability, color match, labor minimums, second-story access, underlayment damage
Professional bird or nest removal/control Often $100-$2,000; cleanup may add $50-$300 or $150-$300 Legal status, active nest timing, access height, sanitation, exclusion materials
Temporary professional netting/exclusion A few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars High gables, multi-story eaves, lift equipment, large cedar elevations
Full siding replacement Broadly $8,000-$30,000 for many whole-home projects Home size, stories, tear-off, trim, weather barrier, local labor, material choice
Installed vinyl siding benchmark About $4-$12 per sq. ft. installed Elevation complexity, trim package, removal, wall repairs, regional labor

Do not jump to full siding replacement because of one bird. Replacement starts making sense when the siding is already near the end of its service life, the same elevations have widespread rot, panels cannot be matched, or repeated patching is costing more than a planned exterior upgrade.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY is reasonable when the damage is reachable from the ground or a safe low ladder, the holes are small, the wood is sound, there is no active nest, and the bird has only recently started pecking. In that case, install reflective deterrents, cover the spot temporarily, inspect for obvious moisture or insects, and patch once activity stops.

Hire a contractor, wildlife-control professional, or pest professional when the damage is high on a gable, near a steep roof, involves multiple holes, appears to enter a wall cavity, includes soft or rotten trim, or may involve an active nest. Second-story work near rooflines is where homeowner repairs get risky fast. Proper access equipment can cost more, but it is still cheaper than a fall.

Call a contractor when the building envelope is compromised

A contractor should be involved if the siding is split, sheathing is exposed, water has entered, trim needs replacement, or flashing details are suspect. The repair may need more than filler: new trim, patched housewrap, replacement siding, primer, paint, and better drainage detailing.

Call wildlife control when nesting or legal questions are involved

If you suspect an active nest, do not close the hole until you know what is inside and what rules apply. Native birds, nests, and eggs are generally protected. In some cases, control must wait until young birds have left permanently. Lethal control or nest disturbance can require permits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Call pest control when the bird is foraging

If the pecking appears tied to insects, treat the insect problem before making final repairs. Otherwise, you may patch the surface while leaving the attraction behind the wall.

A Practical Decision Tree for Homeowners

Use this sequence if a woodpecker starts hitting your house this week.

  1. Observe for 10 minutes. Note whether the bird is drumming loudly, making neat cavity holes, drilling random holes, or returning to rows of small holes.
  2. Protect the exact spot immediately. Install reflective moving deterrents directly at the damaged area. Budget $10-$40 for basic DIY materials.
  3. Add temporary exclusion if it returns. Use netting, hardware cloth, plastic sheeting, or a temporary smooth panel that does not trap water.
  4. Inspect the wall. Look for insects, rot, water staining, soft trim, loose siding, failed caulk, and bad flashing.
  5. Check for nest activity. If birds are entering a cavity or you hear young, stop and get wildlife guidance before closing anything.
  6. Repair correctly. Patch, prime, paint, and weatherproof small sound areas. Replace rotten or repeatedly damaged components.
  7. Upgrade repeat-hit zones. Consider fiber cement, PVC trim, metal flashing, or smoother painted surfaces at vulnerable gables, corners, fascia, and chimney chases.

Common Mistakes That Make Woodpecker Problems Worse

The biggest mistake is waiting. A bird that drums or excavates successfully for several weeks is harder to move than one interrupted on day one.

The second mistake is patching without diagnosis. If the wall has carpenter ants, wet sheathing, or rotten trim, filler is only a temporary cover. The bird may return, and the wall may keep deteriorating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The third mistake is leaving open holes. Open cavities invite water, insects, and more pecking. Even if you cannot complete the final repair immediately, install a temporary weather-shedding cover and schedule the proper work.

The fourth mistake is using one static scare device. Movement, reflection, and change are what help. A stationary owl, especially one left in the same place, often becomes background scenery.

The fifth mistake is ignoring legal limits. If there is an active nest, eggs, or young birds, the timing and options change. Humane exclusion and building repair are the normal path; nest removal and lethal control are regulated.

How We Would Handle a Typical Siding Call

For a homeowner with woodpecker holes in painted wood siding, our first site visit would focus on three things: why the bird chose that spot, whether the wall is sound, and how to prevent water entry before the next rain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

We would inspect the exact holes, nearby trim, roofline flashing, gutters, paint condition, and siding profile. If the wood is dry and solid, the repair may be a focused patch and repaint. If the trim is soft or the siding is compromised, we would price replacement of the affected boards rather than selling a cosmetic fix that will fail.

For repeat damage on cedar gables or chimney chases, we would discuss targeted upgrades. A small section of fiber cement, PVC trim, or discreet metal flashing can be more practical than patching the same holes every season. The goal is not to fight the bird forever. The goal is to make the house less attractive and more durable.

Bottom Line

To stop woodpeckers from pecking your house, move quickly, treat the exact spot being attacked, and do not skip the building inspection. Reflective moving deterrents and temporary exclusion can stop active pecking, but permanent success usually comes from repairing the exterior: dry wood, tight trim, sealed joints, sound siding, proper paint, and no hidden insect or moisture problem.

If the damage is high, repeated, wet, rotten, or possibly connected to an active nest, bring in the right professional. A good repair protects both the house and the bird, and it costs less than letting a small hole become a siding, sheathing, or water-intrusion project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are woodpeckers pecking my house?

Usually for one of four reasons: territorial drumming, insect foraging, nesting or roosting, or acorn storage. Rapid tapping on metal is often drumming. Random holes can point to insects or soft wood. Larger neat holes may be nesting or roosting cavities.

What is the fastest humane way to stop woodpecker damage?

Act immediately. Place moving reflective deterrents directly over or beside the attacked spot, then add temporary exclusion such as netting, hardware cloth, or a smooth protective panel if the bird returns. Repair holes after inspecting for insects, rot, and moisture.

Are woodpeckers protected by law in the United States?

Yes. Native woodpeckers are generally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, including birds, nests, and eggs. Homeowners should use humane deterrence, exclusion, and repair. Active nests and lethal control can involve permit rules.

Can I remove a woodpecker nest from my siding?

Do not remove or close a suspected active nest without confirming the legal and wildlife requirements. If eggs or young birds are present, control measures may need to wait until the young have permanently left, often around midsummer depending on species and location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I inspect for termites or carpenter ants if woodpeckers are pecking my siding?

Yes, especially if the holes are random, repeated, or located in soft or damp wood. Woodpeckers may be foraging for insects, and patching the siding without treating confirmed insect activity can lead to repeat damage.

How much does it cost to repair woodpecker holes in siding in 2026?

DIY patching for a few small holes in painted wood often runs $25-$150 in materials. Professional small siding or trim repair commonly ranges from $100-$1,500. Vinyl siding repair averages roughly $283-$1,089 nationally, depending on panel match, access, and damage behind the siding.
