Stone, metal and glass can read as one coherent modern façade when each material has a defined job rather than competing for attention. The Mariano’s Fresh Market in Oak Lawn, Illinois, shows that approach in a documented commercial project: stone establishes a substantial base, glass brings visibility and daylight, and corrugated metal supplies a controlled pattern of light and shadow. The store is the anchor tenant in Phase II of Stony Creek Promenade, so this is a specific retail case study—not a universal formula for every building.
The 2016 project profile reports 5,000 square feet of 0.875-inch Silver Metallic PAC-CLAD corrugated wall panels and approximately 3,000 square feet of flat sheet fabricated for fascia at the signature rotunda. Camburas & Theodore Ltd. designed the building, Petersen’s Elk Grove Village, Illinois, plant manufactured the wall panels, and B&B Sheet Metal Co. installed them.

What the Oak Lawn project set out to achieve
The project brief called for metal to accent selected areas and complement the other façade materials. That distinction matters: metal was not treated as the entire exterior or as a decorative layer applied everywhere. It was assigned to locations where its texture, color and fabrication flexibility could reinforce the building’s larger composition.

The grocery store’s role as an anchor tenant also influenced the design problem. An anchor needs to be legible from a distance and memorable without becoming visually chaotic. The profile presents the Oak Lawn façade as a response to that requirement: a strong horizontal building form, a signature rotunda and carefully placed metal accents rather than a collection of unrelated finishes.

How the three materials divide the façade work
Stone: visual weight and a grounded base
The profile identifies stone as one of the principal materials, but it does not publish a stone species, thickness, attachment system or measured area. That limits what can responsibly be concluded about its technical performance. Visually, however, stone gives the composition a solid, grounded reading against the lighter and more reflective surfaces. When a design uses stone in selected zones instead of spreading it uniformly, the material can establish a base or frame while leaving room for metal and glazing to carry other roles.
Glass: visibility and openness
Glass is also named in the palette without a product, glazing build-up, visible-light specification or energy data. In a grocery storefront, glazing typically marks customer-facing entries and display areas, but the available project description does not quantify those locations. The safe design lesson is to coordinate the glass zones with circulation, signage and interior lighting so that transparency supports wayfinding rather than creating glare or visual noise. Any actual glazing selection would require current code, thermal and safety review.

Metal: accent, rhythm and controlled contrast
Metal receives the most detailed treatment in the published account. The 0.875-inch Silver Metallic corrugated panels cover 5,000 square feet of façade. Corrugation introduces a repeating ridge-and-valley pattern, so the surface changes appearance as daylight moves across it. Pezzuto described the effect as providing “a clean light-and-dark animation of corrugated shadow that adds to the horizontal feel of the building.”
That statement explains why the panels do more than simply add a silver color. Their geometry creates a visual rhythm that reinforces the building’s horizontal emphasis. The metallic finish catches light, while the corrugations create darker recesses; together they produce contrast without requiring multiple bright colors.
Why corrugated panels were selected for this design
Pezzuto attributed the choice to both design and cost considerations, saying: “The design flexibility and economic value of PAC-CLAD metal panels contributed to the design vision in a way other materials couldn’t.” This is the architect’s project rationale, not an independently measured cost comparison. No competing bids, lifecycle-cost study or unit-price schedule is reported.

Corrugated panels can be laid out in bands, fields or framed accents, allowing a design team to tune module direction and joint locations to the building’s geometry. On the Oak Lawn store, the published description connects that flexibility to the desired horizontal expression. The result is a façade where panel placement supports the overall massing instead of reading as an unrelated cladding choice.

Troy Wormley, president of B&B Sheet Metal, described the selected corrugated panel as “very rigid, easy to cut, easy to install and presents a great architectural look on a block wall.” This is a contractor’s project comment. It should not be read as a quantified structural test, a universal installation claim or proof that every corrugated panel behaves identically.
The rotunda and the role of flat sheet
The signature rotunda required a different metal treatment from the corrugated wall fields. Approximately 3,000 square feet of flat sheet was fabricated for rotunda fascia. Flat sheet provides a smoother visual surface around a curved or prominent feature, allowing the rotunda to read as a distinct element while remaining within the same metal palette.
Using corrugated panels on broad wall areas and flat sheet at the rotunda illustrates a useful coordination principle: one material family can contain several surface expressions. The designer can preserve color continuity while changing texture where the geometry or focal importance changes. The source does not state the flat sheet’s gauge, coating system, seam layout or fabrication method, so those details must be established separately on any new project.
How to apply the design logic on another building
The Oak Lawn example can inform a process, but it cannot substitute for project-specific engineering. A team considering a stone-metal-glass façade should work through the following sequence.

- Define the visual hierarchy. Decide which material should read as the base, which should mark entrances or public zones, and where metal will act as an accent. Draw those zones on elevations before choosing panel patterns.
- Set the building’s directional emphasis. If the design depends on a horizontal reading like Oak Lawn’s, align corrugation, joints, reveals and adjacent stone courses so they reinforce that direction rather than interrupt it.
- Reserve focal geometry for the appropriate surface. Curved or signature elements may require flat sheet, formed trims or custom fabrication. Confirm bend radii, seams and substrate conditions with the fabricator before finalizing the shape.
- Coordinate transitions. Detail the interfaces between stone, metal and glass for movement, drainage, flashing, sealants and tolerances. A persuasive rendering cannot resolve a missing transition detail.
- Verify the panel specification. The Oak Lawn profile states a 0.875-inch Silver Metallic panel, but another project may require a different profile, thickness, coating, span or attachment system. Obtain current manufacturer documentation and confirm compliance with the project’s wind, fire and code requirements.
- Model daylight and nighttime appearance. Corrugation changes shadow throughout the day, while glazing and interior illumination alter the façade after dark. Review elevations in sun and shade conditions before approving the final pattern.
- Document maintenance access. Establish how stone, glazing, trims and metal will be inspected and cleaned. The published project description does not establish that the panels are maintenance-free or provide a maintenance interval.
What is known—and not known—about cost and performance
The architect specifically cited economic value as part of the decision, but the sources provide no contract sum, installed price, comparison with stone or glass alternatives, payback period or lifecycle-cost result. It would be inaccurate to turn the phrase “economic value” into a numerical savings claim.
Likewise, the project profile contains no independent measurements for energy use, weather resistance, acoustics, fire performance, corrosion life or durability. The panel quantities and the installer’s positive description document what was built and how it was regarded by participants; they do not establish market-wide performance.
| Question a new project team may ask | What the Oak Lawn sources establish | What must be verified separately |

| How often will it need maintenance? | No interval or maintenance study is provided. | Manufacturer guidance, exposure conditions and the owner’s inspection plan. |
Common mistakes when repeating the look
Treating the palette as a recipe
Stone, metal and glass are broad material categories. Their appearance and behavior vary with color, texture, jointing, coating, thickness and support. Repeating the labels without repeating the project’s proportions and detailing will not reproduce the same effect.

Assuming contractor praise is a test result
Wormley’s comments communicate practical satisfaction with this installation. They do not replace engineering data, laboratory testing or a project-specific quality plan. Keep those evidence types distinct when writing specifications and making approvals.
Reading the Oak Lawn façade as a design precedent
Pezzuto summarized the compositional intent this way: “This combination of materials makes a statement by using metal in modern architecture in a simple and clear way.” The important word is “simple.” The façade’s modern character comes from limiting the number of materials and giving each one a legible area of responsibility.

Stone supplies familiarity, glass communicates public access, and metal introduces a contemporary pattern. Their relationship—not any single product—creates the modern-classical reading described by the architect.
Bottom line for designers and owners
The Mariano’s Fresh Market in Oak Lawn is a useful, bounded case study in material coordination. Its documented strategy combines stone, glass and Silver Metallic corrugated metal, using 5,000 square feet of 0.875-inch wall panels for façade fields and about 3,000 square feet of flat sheet at the rotunda fascia. Corrugation adds the changing light-and-shadow texture that supports the building’s horizontal emphasis, while the rotunda receives a smoother metal expression.
Use the project as a precedent for assigning clear roles, coordinating transitions and testing how texture changes with light. Do not treat its quantities, finish or architect’s cost rationale as universal specifications. Current manufacturer data, code review, structural design, fabrication coordination and a project-specific maintenance plan remain essential for any new stone-metal-glass façade.
