For a typical U.S. reach-in closet designed for hanging clothes, plan around 24 inches of finished interior depth; 48 inches is a common minimum width, and 72–96 inches is a common width range. These are planning conventions, not universal building-code requirements. Walk-in dimensions depend on the storage layout and the aisle left clear after installation.
Common reach-in closet dimensions
Home Project Resources’ August 2026 planning guide describes 24 inches of finished interior depth as common for a reach-in closet used to hang clothes, and lists 22 inches as an absolute minimum. It gives 48 inches as a common minimum width and 72–96 inches as a common range. These figures are useful starting points, not binding requirements for every home.

| Width | 48 inches common minimum; 72–96 inches common, according to the same guide | Choose a width that fits the room and the intended storage layout. |

| Double rod heights | Approximately 40 inches and 80 inches | A common arrangement for shorter garments; not a required configuration. |
Measure the usable interior
Measure finished interior dimensions from the inside surfaces, not the framed opening. The depth that matters is the usable front-to-back space once finishes are in place. Account for the door and its swing or track, along with any shelving or organizer that will occupy the closet. A nominal opening measurement can overstate the space available for clothes and access.

Walk-in closet size depends on the layout
Home Project Resources offers three walk-in examples: 4 by 4 feet as a minimum example, 5 by 5 feet as a more comfortable example, and 6 by 8 feet for a dressing-area example. They are design examples from a private planning guide, not universal minimums or code requirements.

Before settling on a footprint, sketch the hanging and shelving depth on each wall, then check how much clear aisle remains between them. Include the door opening and any drawers or other components that extend into the walking area. The useful question is not just whether the room meets one sample dimension, but whether the planned storage leaves enough space to move and use it.
Set rod height for the clothes and the person
A single rod at roughly 66–70 inches is common guidance. For shorter items, double hanging can use rods at approximately 40 and 80 inches. Treat these as starting points: long garments need adequate uninterrupted hanging height, while a user’s reach may favor a lower rod or a different arrangement.

HUD’s Residential Remodeling and Universal Design notes that some people have difficulty reaching clothes hung at conventional rod height and recommends considering lower or adjustable rods and shelves. It states, “The most flexible closet system is adjustable.” An adjustable system can be reset as users, garments, or storage needs change.
Accessibility and closet-code requirements are context-specific
ADA storage provisions apply where the governing standards require accessible storage; they should not be treated as rules for every private home closet. Under the U.S. Access Board’s ADA Standards, where storage is provided in accessible spaces, at least one of each type must meet the applicable provisions. Those provisions address approach, clear floor space, and reach range; the specific reach limits depend on the approach and whether an obstruction is present. Check the official standard for the project and its applicable requirements rather than applying one reach number in isolation.

HUD’s universal-design guidance is useful for residential planning even when a particular closet is not subject to ADA provisions: lower or adjustable rods and shelves can better suit people with different reach needs.
Code requirements can also be specific to an occupancy. For example, the 2022 California Building Code, Section 1225.5.2.3.8, addresses wardrobes or closets in patient resident rooms. It specifies minimum inside dimensions of 2 feet deep by 1 foot 8 inches wide and calls for adjustable rods and shelves, with a rod adjustment range described in that section. That provision is not a standard size for a household bedroom closet.

- Check how the door and installed storage affect usable space and access.
- For a walk-in, verify the aisle remaining after storage is drawn into the plan.
