Jewel tones—rich, saturated colors inspired by gemstones—can bring depth and character to a remodel, whether they appear on a full wall, a built-in, or a few carefully chosen furnishings. The 2021 MyDomaine article named in the original headline actually presents nine palettes, so this guide covers all nine rather than trimming one without a design reason.

What counts as a jewel tone?

Emerald, ruby, sapphire, amethyst, and citrine are familiar examples. The term describes a decorating family, not a fixed or standardized color chart: shades vary, and the same color can read differently beside natural wood, pale paint, or metallic finishes. The palettes below are inspiration, not a ranked or tested set.

9 jewel tone palettes to consider for a remodel

1. Emerald green and yellow

Emerald gives the scheme its depth; yellow or mustard supplies a brighter counterpoint. Pairing emerald with natural wood can keep a small, enclosed space—such as a mudroom or home office—from feeling overly formal. Designer Malka Helft of Think Chic Interiors has described emerald, natural wood, and a pop of yellow as a favorite combination for “jewel box” spaces.

2. Sapphire, turquoise, and gray

This cool, ocean-like mix is a good fit when you want color without committing every wall to it. Use sapphire or turquoise in a few elements—such as a chair, tile detail, or accessories—and keep nearby finishes relatively neutral and cool. Designer Amy Studebaker notes that a jewel-tone accent can make an impact in an otherwise neutral room.

3. Navy and amethyst

Navy grounds amethyst, creating a rich combination that can feel opulent yet inviting. For a more dramatic, regal direction, add golden yellow in a small dose, such as a lamp, hardware, or cushion. Modsy’s former vice president of style, Alessandra Wood, recommended purple as a base for jewel tones including navy or sapphire.

4. Jade and citrine

Mossy jade green and pale yellow-orange citrine make a warm, autumnal scheme. Because both hues can carry substantial visual weight, consider introducing citrine first through a rug or pillows, then decide whether the room needs more. Interior designer David Mason cautioned that this is a rich scheme suited to larger rooms or high ceilings; that is design guidance, not a rule that excludes smaller rooms.

5. Peacock blue and emerald green

This bold blue-green pairing makes a strong case for color on the walls. Designer Mark Manardo has said rich peacock blue can work especially well in a smaller living room, lending it a “jewel box” feeling. In a larger room, use the colors on one wall or in a partial paint treatment if covering every wall feels like too much.

6. Jade, magenta, and cerulean blue

Jade, vivid magenta, and cerulean blue create a high-contrast combination. Keep the palette controlled by choosing a lead color, then bringing in the others through a rug, artwork, pillows, or one accent wall. Certified interior designer Marco Bizzley has named this trio as a favorite jewel-tone scheme.

7. Garnet and sapphire

Garnet red and sapphire blue form a moody, romantic pairing for a dining room or another space where a more dramatic atmosphere suits the design. One approach described by Nashville designer Lauren Harmon used sapphire walls, garnet host chairs, a topaz vase, and a multicolored rug to connect the colors.

8. Mustard and navy

A navy or mustard focal piece—such as a sofa—can set the direction before you choose paint and accessories. Repeating navy in a rug or pillows helps tie the room together rather than leaving the main color isolated. Studebaker recommends repeating a jewel tone through a space to create a cozier feel.

9. Periwinkle, teal, and seafoam green

Periwinkle, teal, and seafoam offer a softer blue-green direction. Instead of putting every color at eye level, consider an unexpected surface, such as the ceiling, for one shade. MyDomaine’s 2021 article connected this palette to Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year, Very Peri; that reference is historical, not a claim about the current color of the year.

How to choose a palette for your project

Start with the mood and temperature

Blue, sapphire, teal, and blue-green combinations tend toward a cooler look; garnet, mustard, citrine, and amber accents bring warmth. Decide which direction suits the room’s existing light, wood, and fixed finishes before selecting paint or materials.

Choose how much contrast you want

For a quieter result, let one jewel tone lead and support it with neutral finishes. For more visual energy, combine several saturated hues, but give each a clear role: a dominant color, a supporting color, and a limited accent.

Match the color commitment to the room

Try pillows, bedding, a rug, or an upholstered chair when you want an easy-to-change starting point. An accent wall, painted millwork, or full-room color treatment makes a stronger architectural statement. Room size alone does not determine what will work; the amount of color and the balance of finishes matter too.

Balance deep color with light and texture

Light-colored furniture or rugs can offset dark walls. Natural wood, ivory, and metallic details can also help a saturated scheme feel considered rather than dense. If a room feels too dark, mirrors or reflective finishes may help distribute light visually.

More combinations to adapt

Wayfair’s editorial palette suggestions offer additional starting points: emerald with sapphire and lighter aquamarine or pale purple; emerald with burgundy, topaz or amber, ivory, and gold; sapphire with topaz and rose quartz; and emerald, teal, and navy with peridot-like chartreuse. These are retailer suggestions rather than tested rankings or a consensus among designers, so use them as prompts and check samples against the room’s actual materials and light.

What the original headline gets wrong

Mackenzie Dunn’s MyDomaine article, published December 20, 2021, is titled “8 Jewel Tone Color Palettes Designers Swear By,” but its body numbers nine entries, from 01 through 09. The headline here uses nine to match the article’s actual list.
