There is no universal winner among steel trusses, space frames and tensile membranes. Choose a steel truss when conventional fabrication, predictable connections and familiar inspection are the priority; choose a space frame when a shallow, modular, two-way structure must cover a large column-free plan; and choose a tensile membrane when low dead load, daylight and architectural form justify prestress, specialist analysis and long-term fabric management.

Clear span, wind and snow response, erection access, fire and acoustic performance, replacement strategy and whole-life cost should be set before selecting a roof type. Most tensile stadium roofs are hybrids: fabric or foil works with steel trusses, cables, compression rings, drainage and mechanical equipment.

What each stadium roof system actually is

The three options differ first in how they carry force. That difference controls weight, depth, supports, detailing and maintenance.

Steel trusses

A steel truss is usually a planar assembly of chords and web members. Roof loads travel through axial tension and compression, with bending and connection forces resolved into columns, cores or perimeter supports. The method is familiar to structural steel fabricators, detailers and erection crews, so a conventional stadium geometry generally has lower technical uncertainty.

The Ashton Gate roof illustrates the scale possible with this approach: Tata Steel UK reported a triangular truss spanning 108 m and approximately 1,800 tonnes of structural hollow section in the roof structure (2020). The same project shows why “standard” does not mean simple. Visible connections, transport limits, crane capacity and the sequence for joining large assemblies can dominate the detailing.

Space frames

A space frame is a three-dimensional grid whose members share load in more than one direction. The redundancy and two-way load paths can spread concentrated forces and maintain a relatively shallow structural depth over a column-free bowl. Repeated modules can also make fabrication and assembly systematic, provided node geometry and tolerances are tightly controlled.

Space frames introduce specialist work of their own. Nodes, bolt groups, geometric control, temporary stability and access through a deep three-dimensional lattice require experienced engineering and inspection planning. A roof that is shallow in section may still have many members and difficult working positions.

Tensile membranes

A membrane carries load primarily in tension. It must be prestressed and supported by an engineered system of edge cables, radial cables, steel trusses, arches, compression rings or a combination of these. The fabric is therefore not a stand-alone roof: the support system, anchors, drainage, movement joints and replacement access are part of the roof design.

PTFE-coated glass fibre and ETFE foil are common choices where low mass and translucency are valuable. Optus Stadium used PTFE and ePTFE fabrics over steel-truss cantilevers. SoFi Stadium combines an arching steel-truss compression ring, a double-grid cable net and ETFE panels. Those examples are hybrid structures, not membrane-only roofs.

Side-by-side comparison

Decision factor Steel truss Space frame Tensile membrane
Load path Mostly planar axial forces and bending into supports Three-dimensional, multi-directional load sharing Tensioned fabric or foil supported by cables, trusses, rings or arches
Column-free planning Very good when trusses are deep enough and supports are positioned correctly Very good; two-way action can suit broad shallow plans Very good, but perimeter supports and anchor forces are substantial
Structural depth and dead load Usually the heaviest of the three for an equivalent enclosure Can remain relatively shallow; member count is high Lowest roof-skin dead load, although steel and cable support systems remain significant
Daylight and translucency Depends on separate cladding or roof panels Depends on separate cladding or panels PTFE and ETFE can provide substantial diffuse daylight
Fabrication familiarity Broadest conventional steel supply chain Requires specialist nodes, geometry control and assembly Requires membrane patterning, seam, prestress and edge-detail expertise
Inspection and replacement Steel members and connections are comparatively direct to access Many nodes and members can make access and coating inspection difficult Visual inspection is possible, but seams, edges, fittings and replacement rigging need explicit planning
Fire, acoustic and thermal design Often easier to integrate heavy acoustic, thermal and fire-rated build-ups Possible, but services and linings must negotiate a three-dimensional grid Requires project-specific membrane fire classification, acoustic treatment, condensation control and thermal analysis
Cost evidence Normalized cross-system cost: not stated Normalized cross-system cost: not stated Normalized cross-system cost: not stated

That table is a design comparison, not a ranking. Span, geometry, support conditions, local labor, fire and acoustic criteria, membrane specification and erection logistics can reverse the apparent order of cost or construction speed.

Which system spans farthest?

No responsible answer names one material as the universal longest-span winner. A “span” can mean the clear distance over spectators, the cantilever beyond the last column, or the distance between compression-ring supports. Cable pretension, roof curvature, wind uplift, snow drift, seismic movement and the location of back-stays or hangers often matter more than the material label.

Steel truss span behavior

Steel trusses are effective for long, repetitive cantilevers and triangular or tapered roof forms, but increasing span generally increases truss depth, steel tonnage, connection forces and erection-piece size. Ashton Gate’s 108 m triangular truss is a documented example, not a maximum capacity.

Space-frame span behavior

The three-dimensional load path can keep depth comparatively restrained while covering a large plan. A cited stadium case study describes a 60 m by 72 m column-free space and a 25-day erection, reported as about 30% faster than its steel-truss alternative (Yihong Frame, 2026). That comparison is project-specific supplier evidence; it should not be applied as a general productivity rule.

Membrane and cable span behavior

Membranes can cover large spectator areas with very little skin weight, but their edge reactions and support steel can be substantial. A fabric roof may appear lighter while transferring high horizontal and uplift forces into a compression ring or perimeter structure. The practical question is therefore which complete system—membrane, cable net, ring, truss and foundations—meets the span and movement requirements.

Dead load, depth and stadium sightlines

Reducing roof dead load can reduce columns, foundations and seismic demand, but only if the supporting system remains efficient. Tensile roofs have the lightest primary skin. Their prestress also gives the surface stiffness against flutter and ponding, so the membrane cannot be sized by weight alone.

Space frames distribute loads efficiently and can avoid the very deep girders that obstruct sightlines or increase the bowl’s overall height. Their depth is not zero: services, catwalks, lighting, sprinklers and maintenance routes must fit around the grid.

Steel trusses offer straightforward attachment points for catwalks, acoustic absorbers, mechanical equipment and suspended scoreboards. The trade-off is greater mass and, in some geometries, a deeper visible structure.

Daylight, weather and environmental performance

Translucency

PTFE-coated glass and ETFE can admit diffuse daylight, reducing daytime artificial lighting and creating a distinctive interior atmosphere. Translucency is not the same as solar control: glare, solar heat gain, bird impact, cleaning and nighttime lighting must be assessed for the actual site and panel build-up.

Wind and flutter

Membranes need form-finding and prestress analysis for wind suction, pressure reversals and dynamic response. Seams, corners and edge cables see concentrated forces. Steel trusses and space frames are stiffer, but their cladding and connection zones still require aerodynamic analysis, especially at open ends and corners.

Snow and rain

Any roof form must prevent water accumulation and account for drifting snow. Double curvature and drainage channels help a membrane shed water, while gutters, scuppers and emergency overflows need inspection access. A rigid truss roof may simplify drainage geometry but still needs allowance for ponding under deflection and blocked outlets.

Seismic movement

In seismic regions, a light membrane skin can reduce inertial mass, yet large support reactions, sliding bearings and differential movement between ring, cables and bowl must be detailed. Space frames and trusses require explicit bracing and movement joints rather than assuming their redundancy alone will provide seismic performance.

Fabrication and erection logistics

Steel truss sequence

Fabricators commonly shop-build manageable truss sections, transport them to site, assemble or splice them at ground level and lift them with cranes or strand jacks. Large sections can reduce the number of high-level bolted joints, but transport route, crane radius and temporary bracing become critical. Ashton Gate’s visible connections demonstrate how architectural requirements can constrain otherwise efficient steel detailing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Space-frame sequence

Space-frame modules may be assembled on the ground and lifted in panels, or built progressively from temporary towers. The erection method must control cumulative geometric error: a small node discrepancy repeated across many bays can prevent closure at the perimeter. Temporary works, surveying and bolt-access platforms should be priced and scheduled from the outset.

Membrane sequence

Patterned fabric or foil is manufactured to calculated cutting patterns, welded or seamed, fitted with edge reinforcements and tensioned in a controlled sequence. Optus used approximately 44 m welded truss sections and completed fabric cladding at ground level before lifting, reducing work at height (Lightweight Structures Association of Australasia, 2018). This approach can improve safety, but it requires clean laydown space, weather protection and strict control of membrane handling.

SoFi Stadium demonstrates the coordination challenge at larger scale: its roof covers 1.3 million square feet, integrates 302 ETFE panels and includes 46 mechanized vents; the project page reports more than 3,000 tons of ETFE membrane (ETS, 2020). Mechanical, electrical, drainage and control systems must be coordinated with the cable net and panel geometry.

Fire, acoustics and thermal comfort

Membrane selection must satisfy the governing building code and venue brief for flame spread, smoke, radiant exposure and fire-fighting strategy. PTFE-coated glass and ETFE have different behavior and detailing requirements; a generic “fabric roof” specification is inadequate. Fire separation at concessions, kitchens, plant rooms and enclosed hospitality areas may require independent rated construction below or around the roof.

Acoustics are equally project-specific. Lightweight membranes can reflect, transmit or scatter sound differently from heavy metal decking. Concert venues may need perforated liners, suspended reflectors or absorptive banners. A steel truss or space frame makes suspension possible, but the additional equipment adds load and access demands. Thermal design must address solar gain, condensation, ventilation and snow insulation; translucency alone does not guarantee comfort.

How long do PTFE and ETFE roofs last?

Use lifespan statements as specified design targets, not guarantees. Material life depends on coating, exposure, seams, edge fittings, cleaning, ultraviolet radiation, pollution, storm damage and the quality of the supporting geometry.

Project or assessment Reported figure What the figure means
Optus Stadium PTFE-coated glass selected for a stated 40+ year lifespan; stadium design-life criterion of 50 years Project specification and design criterion, not a promise that every component will last unchanged (Lightweight Structures Association of Australasia, 2018)
Sydney Football Stadium 50+ year PTFE lifespan with minimal maintenance Case-study statement for 48 PTFE panels on a lightweight diagrid steel frame (Lightweight Structures Association of Australasia, 2024)
UNI-Dome assessment Older cable-supported tensile replacement was more than 25 years old in 2023 and showed widespread distress Condition history demonstrating why inspection and actual exposure matter (ASTM International, 2023)

ETFE is often supplied as replaceable cushions or panels, so the service-life question includes film replacement, pressure-control equipment, seals and access systems. A long design life for the film does not eliminate inspections of seams, clamps, cables, corrosion protection, drainage and support steel.

Inspection, maintenance and replacement planning

Write the maintenance method before freezing the roof geometry. The owner should have defined routes, anchor points, fall protection, lighting and isolation procedures for every membrane edge, cable clamp, gutter, vent and mechanical fitting.

  • Steel trusses: inspect welds, bolts, gusset plates, corrosion protection, bearings and drainage interfaces; renew coatings according to the exposure category.
  • Space frames: inspect node bolts, hidden corrosion pockets, member coatings, movement joints and the condition of access platforms.
  • Tensile roofs: inspect fabric or foil, seams, edge ropes, clamps, cable sockets, prestress indicators, tears, dirt, ponding, drainage and replacement panels.
  • All systems: record storm events, unusual movement, leaks, blocked outlets and changes in suspended equipment loads.

Designing replacement access can save more than optimizing the initial membrane weight. A panel that cannot be safely isolated and removed may force expensive temporary works or prolonged venue closure.

Cost and whole-life value

Available case material does not publish normalized costs that compare all three systems on the same span, area, code and finish basis. It is therefore not defensible to label one option universally cheapest.

Estimate the complete installed and operated roof, including:

  • primary steel, cables, rings, bearings and foundations;
  • membrane, foil, cladding, insulation, acoustic liners and fire protection;
  • patterning, nodes, connection testing, temporary works and cranes;
  • drainage, vents, lighting, catwalks, fall protection and controls;
  • inspection, cleaning, coating renewal, panel replacement and planned outages.

A light membrane may reduce foundations and erection loads but require specialist patterning and replacement planning. A space frame may shorten erection for a repetitive geometry yet increase node fabrication and access costs. A steel truss may have a higher initial tonnage while offering a familiar maintenance supply chain. Compare net present whole-life cost only after the same performance requirements and replacement intervals are defined.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical selection process

  1. Fix the geometry and support condition. Define clear span, cantilever, bowl shape, perimeter columns, sightline limits and whether the roof must remain open at the ends.
  2. Set environmental actions. Establish wind regions, snow drift, rain intensity, seismic category, temperature range and corrosion exposure.
  3. Set occupant requirements. Document daylight, glare, acoustics, thermal comfort, smoke control, fire classification and enclosed hospitality zones.
  4. Test erection routes. Check transport envelopes, laydown areas, crane or jack positions, temporary towers, weather limits and work-at-height exposure.
  5. Develop maintenance access. Show how inspectors reach every connection, seam, gutter, vent and replacement panel without unsafe improvisation.
  6. Price the whole system. Include supports, foundations, services, temporary works and a realistic inspection and replacement allowance rather than comparing roof skins alone.
  7. Select the structural family. Favor steel trusses for conventional, predictable detailing; space frames for shallow modular two-way action; and tensile hybrids when low mass, translucency and expressive form outweigh specialist lifecycle demands.
  8. Validate with project-specific analysis. Confirm form-finding, nonlinear behavior, dynamic wind response, drainage, fire engineering, acoustics, thermal performance and constructability before procurement.

Bottom-line decision

Steel trusses are the conservative choice when fabrication familiarity, visible connection control and conventional inspection dominate. Space frames are compelling where a broad column-free plan benefits from shallow, multi-directional load sharing and a repetitive module can be erected efficiently. Tensile membranes deliver the lowest skin weight and the strongest daylight and architectural effects, but only as carefully engineered hybrid systems with prestress, support steel, cables, drainage and a funded replacement strategy.

The best stadium roof is the one whose structural behavior, construction sequence and maintenance obligations match the venue’s site and operating brief. Treat every lifespan, speed or weight figure as project-specific evidence, then verify it against the actual geometry, climate, code and access plan.
