No. Don’t splash a driveway with automotive antifreeze mixed with salt. Antifreeze can be dangerous if swallowed, and Poison Control says not to pour it onto the ground or into storm drains. Use a deicer made and labeled for ice control, or sand or gravel if you need traction rather than melting.
Why antifreeze does not belong on a driveway
A driveway is an exposed area where people, pets, soil, and runoff may come into contact with a spilled liquid. Poison Control warns that antifreeze is dangerous if swallowed, advises keeping it away from children and pets, and says not to pour it onto the ground or into storm drains. Its guidance also recommends cleaning spills promptly and following local instructions for proper disposal: Poison Control’s antifreeze safety guidance.
Many automotive antifreeze products contain ethylene glycol, but formulations vary. Check the specific bottle’s label rather than assuming every coolant has the same ingredients. Ethylene glycol toxicity can develop as the body breaks it down into substances that affect blood chemistry, the nervous system, and kidneys. The EPA also warns that animals may be attracted to driveway spills: EPA information on antifreeze.
Does adding salt make the mixture a good deicer?
No source cited here endorses mixing antifreeze and salt for driveway use, and adding salt does not address the risks of pouring antifreeze onto an exposed surface. Salt deicers also have drawbacks of their own. The EPA says soluble deicing salts can be carried by stormwater into waterways and drinking-water supplies. Its 2021 stormwater guidance says sodium chloride has minimal effectiveness below 15°F; that figure applies to sodium chloride, not to every deicer or mixture: EPA stormwater best-management practices for deicing.

#1 Best Overall
- Professional Grade Performance - This powerful ice melting formula starts working instantly on contact with ice and snow. The melt ensures complete coverage and lasting results, making winter maintenance effortless and effective. In money-saving 50lb bag
- SAFETY-MAX FORMULA Prevents Refreezing: Once your sidewalk, steps, driveway, or parking lot are clear, they will not refreeze; This adds safety for cars and pedestrians in extreme cold weather
- Versatile Usage - Perfect for all outdoor surfaces including driveways, sidewalks, steps, balconies, patios, and walkways. The effective formula works in temperatures below zero down to -15, providing reliable performance throughout winter
Choose between melting ice and improving traction
For melting
Use a product specifically made and labeled for ice control. Common homeowner options include sodium chloride and calcium chloride, alongside other formulations. Check the package for the intended surface, application amount, and temperature guidance, then follow those directions. More is not better: over-application can harm plants, concrete, cement, soil, and water, and some products can irritate skin or paws. Poison Control’s household guidance covers use amounts and precautions: Poison Control guidance on ice melt and Poison Control’s additional ice-melt advice.
For traction
Sand or gravel can make a slippery area easier to walk on, but they do not melt ice. If you apply a chemical deicer, shovel or push away the loosened slush afterward rather than leaving it to run off or refreeze.

- Environmental Consideration - This advanced formula is notably less corrosive to concrete than traditional ice melt. The environmentally conscious choice for responsible winter safety management. Apply 2-4 ounces per sq yrd
- Versatile Usage - Perfect for all outdoor surfaces including driveways, sidewalks, steps, balconies, patios, and walkways. The effective formula works in temperatures below zero down to -15, providing reliable performance throughout winter
- Use It Ahead Of Time - This is easy to apply with a shaker or straight from the bag; It is an affordable way to prevent ice formation and should be spread prior to snowfall to make shoveling easier; Follow instructions on the bag for best results
- SAFETY-MAX FORMULA Prevents Refreezing: Once your sidewalk, steps, driveway, or parking lot are clear, they will not refreeze; This adds safety for cars and pedestrians in extreme cold weather
Compare deicers without assuming one is harmless
No ice melt is universally harmless. Deicers differ in temperature performance, surface compatibility, corrosion potential, and environmental impact. The EPA notes that alternatives such as calcium magnesium acetate also involve tradeoffs, so don’t treat a different active ingredient as a guarantee of safety: EPA information on deicer tradeoffs.
Quick Recap
Rank #3
- PREMIUM ICE MELT: Melts to -15°F The faster an ice melter works, the less chance there is for a mishap to occur. That’s why National Blue Ice Melt contains two patented accelerating agents. National Blue Ice Melt has been shown in Strategic Highway Research Program testing, to exceed the melt value of a theoretical 50% calcium chloride blend.
- SIZE: Optimized particle size for controlled spreading, allowing you to melt more with less cost. National Blue Ice Melt also contains anti-caking agents that ensure easy flow for ice melt spreaders and longer storage life. Contains a water soluble non-staining coverage indicator. Making it easier to see when spreading.
- BETTER INGREDIENTS: Magnesium Chloride Free! Commercial strength, professional ice melter down to -15°F. Contains 10% Calcium Chloride.
- ANTI-CAKING: National Blue ice melt contains an anti-caking agent that helps for easy flow for ice melt spreaders and longer storage life
- PET + CONCRETE FRIENDLY: National Blue Ice Melt will not harm concrete and vegetation when used according to label instructions. Ice Melt contains no added magnesium chloride which has been shown in studies to chemically attack concrete. Incorporating liquid anti-icing practices with dry application rates is essential to reducing chloride and salt impacts on the environment. Safe for pets and their paws
- Surface: Use only as directed for the driveway material identified on the package. The sources cited here do not certify a particular product for every driveway surface.
- Temperature: Check the product’s stated operating range. EPA’s below-15°F guidance applies specifically to sodium chloride.
- Amount and exposure: Apply only the labeled amount, and keep children and pets away as the package directs. Excess product can increase exposure and damage.
- Runoff and corrosion: Consider where meltwater will flow and the potential effects on nearby plants, soil, water, and metal.
- Claims of safety: Don’t rely on broad “pet-safe” or “environmentally safe” claims without product-specific evidence. EPA says use and especially overuse can create problems for pets and the environment. Its Safer Choice program is ending certification for ice-melt products, so program status should not be treated as a current endorsement: EPA’s ice-melt information.
If antifreeze has already been spilled
- Keep children and pets away from the area.
- Clean the spill promptly, following Poison Control’s guidance and the product label.
- Do not wash it into a storm drain or onto the ground. Check local instructions for proper disposal of cleanup materials and any remaining antifreeze.
