Spindle turning shapes wood whose grain runs parallel to the lathe bed, usually with the blank held between headstock and tailstock centers. Start with safe setup and simple cylinders, then practice tapers, V-grooves, beads and coves on inexpensive wood. The techniques below focus on spindle work—not face-grain bowl turning.

What makes a turning a spindle?

In spindle turning, the grain runs parallel to the lathe bed and the work is typically mounted between a drive center at the headstock and a center at the tailstock. Face-grain, or side-grain, turning places the grain perpendicular to the bed and commonly uses a faceplate or chuck. The distinction matters because the spindle-roughing gouge described here is intended for spindle shaping, not general faceplate work. The American Association of Woodturners (AAW) glossary defines the tools by their intended work.

Spindle work includes forms such as candlesticks, knobs, pens, chessmen, furniture legs, balusters and tool handles. Their details may look elaborate, but most are combinations of basic shapes: cylinders, tapers, beads and coves.

Put safety and setup first

AAW’s safety guidance is direct: “Wear a full face shield whenever the lathe is on.” Its woodturning safety page also advises tying back long hair and avoiding gloves, loose clothing and jewelry. Stand outside the line of fire when starting the lathe, begin at a low speed, and put the tool on the rest before it contacts the wood.

  • Secure the blank between centers; tighten the tailstock and tool-rest locks.
  • Remove the chuck key or other wrench before starting.
  • With the lathe off, turn the work by hand to check that it clears the tool rest and other parts of the machine.
  • Keep the tool rest close to the work and reposition it as the diameter changes.
  • Stop if you notice vibration or an unusual sound, and investigate before restarting.
  • Use sharp tools only for their intended purpose.

AAW’s lathe-basics page offers these suggested spindle speeds by stock diameter: 1 inch or less, 3,000 rpm; 1.5 inches, 2,500 rpm; 2 inches, 2,000 rpm; and 3 inches, 1,500 rpm. These are general guidelines, not a safe-speed guarantee for every lathe, mounting, blank or operator. Start slowly; if you are uncertain, AAW says the speed is probably too high. Check the machine and workpiece, and follow your lathe manufacturer’s guidance. AAW’s lathe basics provides the full setup guidance.

Choose the right tool for each cut

Tool Typical spindle work What to know
Spindle-roughing gouge Removing square corners and roughing gentle curves Use it for spindle shaping; it is not a general bowl-turning tool. AAW glossary
Spindle gouge Beads, coves, tapers, shoulders, ogees and combinations of these forms Its flute is shallower than a bowl gouge’s. AAW glossary
Skew chisel Planing cylinders, tapers, V-cuts and beads Requires control and practice. AAW notes a properly sharpened and honed skew can leave a surface needing little sanding. AAW glossary

These tools have overlapping uses, but they are not interchangeable in every cut. A beginner can learn the sequence on a roughing gouge and spindle gouge, then give the skew dedicated practice rather than expecting immediate control.

Practice the foundational spindle cuts

Keep the lathe speed appropriate to the work, the tool rest close, and the tool supported on the rest. Make controlled cuts and stop the lathe before measuring or changing the setup. AAW’s beginner guidance emphasizes repeating the essentials—rounding a square blank, beads and coves—rather than rushing to complex profiles. AAW beginner resources describe these as core skills.

1. Round the blank and establish a cylinder

Begin with a securely mounted square blank. Use the spindle-roughing gouge to remove the corners and bring the stock toward a cylinder, roughing only gentle curves. Keep the work within spindle turning, with the grain parallel to the bed; do not transfer this tool’s role to faceplate-mounted bowl stock.

Once the blank is round, practice producing a straight cylinder. A skew can plane the surface smooth and reduce the diameter in controlled steps. Work toward a consistent diameter along the length rather than taking an aggressive cut in one pass.

2. Turn a taper

A taper is a gradual reduction in diameter along the spindle. Practice reducing one end or a defined section, keeping the transition deliberate and the tool supported. The skew is used for tapers, as is the spindle gouge; choose the tool and cut you can control, and avoid forcing a method that does not suit your setup.

3. Cut V-grooves and beads

Mark evenly spaced intervals on the cylinder, then make V-grooves to define the details. Roll a bead between neighboring grooves with several light cuts toward its final profile. This staged approach gives you chances to refine the shape without removing too much wood at once.

For skew practice, Jim Echter’s 2019 AAW exercise recommends beginning beads with the point-only method, which it describes as easier to control and less prone to catches. Bead cuts with a skew demand practice; start with light cuts on forgiving stock rather than trying to perfect the shape in one pass. Echter’s “Three skew practice exercises,” published in Woodturning FUNdamentals in August 2019, lays out the marked-groove and bead exercise.

4. Add coves and fillets

Use a spindle gouge to shape a cove between beads. A cove curves inward; leave a narrow flat fillet between adjacent details so the shapes remain distinct. The spindle gouge is also used for ogees, shoulders and combined profiles, but learn the simpler inward curve before linking multiple shapes.

Pick forgiving wood for practice

Use inexpensive stock while you learn tool control. Echter’s August 2019 exercise suggests green, unseasoned branch wood about 2 inches in diameter or pine blanks about 2 by 2 inches and 10 inches long. Those dimensions describe that exercise, not a universal requirement. The exercise says green wood cuts more easily and advises against learning the skew on expensive exotic or hardwood stock. As you move to harder wood, use lighter, slower cuts. AAW’s published exercise gives the practice-stock examples.

Learn with instruction and deliberate repetition

AAW advises beginners to seek instruction before investing in a full set of tools, and recommends putting face protection ahead of other purchases. A class may provide access to a lathe, tools and wood, allowing you to learn safe setup and foundational cuts before buying equipment. Possible places to look include AAW chapters, craft schools, community-college art departments, makerspaces, regional symposiums and woodworking suppliers. AAW’s beginner resources explain its class and learning recommendations.

Before enrolling, ask what safety equipment is provided, how many students there are per instructor, what you will make, and whether tools and wood are included. Repetition is central to learning: practice rounding, cylinders, tapers, beads and coves until you can produce the shapes consistently before moving on to more complicated spindle profiles.
