Spencer Pratt shared video of the Pacific Palisades Fire approaching and consuming the home he shared with Heidi Montag as the fast-moving blaze tore through the Los Angeles-area community on January 7, 2025. Pratt and Montag evacuated safely, but their house was destroyed.
The footage gave viewers a direct look at the couple’s loss as it happened. Reports from TMZ and E! News said Pratt posted video showing him watching the fire reach the property. E! News described his account of the event as a “nightmare come true,” wording that should be understood as Pratt’s or the outlet’s characterization rather than as an independently verified description of the video.

Only a small number of belongings were recovered
Montag shared a follow-up video on January 9, 2025, showing Pratt opening a small plastic bag containing objects recovered from the property. The items described in coverage included a hummingbird feeder or pot, a rubber snake from the backyard, crystals, their son Ryker’s shovel and broken pieces of other possessions.
The recovered objects illustrated how little remained after the structure burned. Reports did not establish the financial value of those items, and the couple’s insurance status has not been reliably established in the available coverage.
The couple later sued Los Angeles officials
In January 2025, Pratt and Montag joined other affected property owners in a lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, according to reporting by the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times.

The lawsuit alleged that municipal infrastructure and water-supply issues contributed to the damage or impaired firefighting efforts. Those claims were allegations made in litigation, not established findings that the city or LADWP caused the fire. A lawsuit itself does not resolve whether the allegations are legally or factually correct.
Investigators examined the fire’s origin and cause
The Palisades Fire was one of several destructive fires that began in Los Angeles County on or after January 7, 2025. The county described the episode as a wind-driven fire siege involving evacuation orders, warnings, emergency response and an extended recovery effort. The Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire were separate fires, although both were part of the January 2025 Los Angeles County wildfire disaster.
On January 13, 2025, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced that it had deployed a National Response Team to investigate the origin and cause of the Palisades Fire. That announcement supports saying that the cause was investigated; it does not, by itself, establish a definitive cause.

By June 2026, the Associated Press reported that a criminal trial had begun for a man accused of sparking the Palisades Fire. Prosecutors alleged that he started a smaller fire on January 1, 2025, which continued smoldering before reigniting on January 7. Those assertions remained allegations presented in court and should not be stated as an adjudicated fact unless and until the legal process establishes them.
Montag’s album received a surge of attention
The couple’s public story also prompted renewed interest in Montag’s 2010 album Superficial. The Associated Press reported on January 13, 2025, that fans rallied around Montag and helped the album reach No. 1 on iTunes’ all-genre album and song charts.
