Acoustic panels absorb sound reflections inside a room, helping reduce echo and reverberation. Soundproofing is about limiting sound traveling between spaces. A panel that absorbs sound on a room’s surface does not, by itself, make the wall soundproof.
What each type of panel is meant to do
Acoustic panels reduce reflections inside a room
When sound reflects from hard surfaces, it can make a room echo or sound reverberant. Acoustic panels and other absorptive finishes take in some of that reflected sound, which can improve clarity and reduce excessive room noise. They treat the sound environment on the room side of a surface.
Sound isolation limits transmission between spaces
Sound isolation addresses sound traveling from one space to another. Airborne sound can pass through partitions and openings; impact sound can travel through building structures. The relevant question is how well the complete wall, ceiling, floor, door, or other barrier—and its connections—limits that transmission. USG describes absorption and transmission as the basic mechanisms involved in building noise control (USG’s Acoustical Ceiling Panel Catalog).
How to tell which problem you have
| What you notice | Relevant approach | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Echo, reverberation, or poor clarity within one room | Sound-absorbing acoustic panels or other absorptive finishes | Absorption data such as NRC, coverage, placement, dimensions, and installation method |
| Noise passing between rooms or from outside | Sound isolation of the relevant wall, ceiling, floor, door, or opening | Transmission performance of the complete assembly, gaps, flanking paths, and construction details |
If the noise is objectionable mainly because it lingers or reflects within the room, absorption may help. If you can hear sound coming through a wall or opening from another space, look at the barrier and its transmission paths rather than relying on a surface panel.

- Wide Applications - Suitably used not only for spot treating sound on walls in your studio and office but also for use in recording studios, vocal booths, control rooms.
- Professional Safe - With strong fire resistance and good air permeability, the acoustic foam panels can stop burning to prevent hidden fire hazards. Also, non-toxic materials won't do harm to your body while everyday use.
NRC and STC measure different things
NRC describes sound absorption
The Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) is a measure of sound absorption. A higher NRC relates to treating reverberation; it does not establish that a panel will block sound from reaching another room. For example, USG lists Mars High-NRC acoustical ceiling panel options with ratings up to 0.95 NRC. That is a manufacturer product specification for absorption, not a soundproofing result. Check the current product data sheet for the selected configuration and intended application (USG Mars High-NRC acoustical panels).
STC describes transmission attenuation
Sound Transmission Class (STC) is used to rate sound attenuation performance of building systems. USG notes that STC ratings for wall and floor systems are based on laboratory testing under ASTM E90 and classification under ASTM E413. ROCKWOOL/Rockfon likewise uses STC terminology and describes sound isolation in terms of the isolation a barrier, such as a wall or door, provides in a laboratory test (ROCKWOOL/Rockfon Acoustics Standards). NRC and STC are not interchangeable: one concerns absorption, the other transmission attenuation.

What to check before choosing a panel or assembly
- For room echo: Look for absorption data, including NRC where available, and confirm panel coverage, placement, dimensions, and mounting method for the room.
- For sound passing through a building: Identify the relevant barrier and assess the complete assembly, including doors, openings, joints, and possible paths around it.
- For a product specification: Confirm the current data sheet, intended ceiling or wall application, configuration, and installation requirements. A ceiling-panel rating should not be assumed to apply to every wall installation.
Because sound isolation depends on the barrier or assembly, a panel’s absorption rating alone cannot establish the result for a particular building. The appropriate construction details depend on the specific sound path and assembly.
