Mounting it above the TV is a legitimate exception—not an automatic improvement—when the television is unusually low, the bar blocks the screen or remote sensor, or the soundbar’s manual specifically supports that orientation.
The best installation protects three priorities in order: comfortable TV viewing height, correct sound-and-picture alignment, and safe, model-approved mounting.

The quick decision rule
- Can the soundbar fit below the TV, centered and unobstructed? Put it below the TV.
- Would below-TV placement force the TV too high, block its remote sensor, or conflict with the furniture? Consider mounting above the TV or using a TV-mounted bracket.
- Is it an Atmos model? Follow the exact clearance, orientation, and ceiling requirements in its manual before drilling.
Dolby’s general guidance favors placing a soundbar in front of and close to the television, approximately at seated ear level. Dolby also recognizes above-TV placement when a television is mounted unusually low. The model’s installation guide ultimately overrides generic advice: for example, Sonos documentation permits above- or below-TV mounting for Beam models, while the cited Arc guidance specifies below-TV mounting. Why below the TV usually sounds better
Most soundbars contain left, center, and right front channels. The center channel carries much of the dialogue. When the bar is close to the screen, voices are more likely to appear to come from the actors rather than from a point noticeably above or below them.

A bar mounted far above the display can make dialogue seem elevated. One mounted too low can create the opposite effect. Centering the bar and keeping it near the screen reduces this sound-image separation. Dolby’s speaker setup guidance describes the center speaker as primarily responsible for dialogue and recommends positioning it just below or above the TV.
Below-TV placement also tends to keep the front drivers aimed naturally toward the seating position. It is usually the simplest arrangement for a TV on a console, and wall mounting below the screen works well when the cabinet is too shallow, low, or crowded.
Do not raise the TV just to make room
Television ergonomics should normally take priority over optimizing the soundbar by a few inches. Raising the display excessively can produce neck strain and an uncomfortable viewing angle. A soundbar slightly above or below ideal ear height is generally a smaller compromise than a TV mounted too high.

Temporarily test the soundbar at several positions on the console or on a stable support, then choose the position that preserves comfortable viewing and clear sound. If the bar must go above the TV, use a model-approved bracket and angle it toward the main seating position where the design permits.

When mounting above the TV makes sense
Above-TV mounting is most defensible when:
- The television is mounted unusually low.
- A large bar would cover the bottom edge of the display.
- The bar blocks the TV’s infrared receiver or makes remote operation unreliable.
- Furniture, shelving, or a shallow cabinet makes below-TV placement impractical.
- The soundbar’s manual explicitly permits above-TV installation.
- The bar can be angled downward or otherwise positioned toward the listener.
Above the TV is not automatically better for Dolby Atmos. It is a geometry solution. The soundbar still needs the manufacturer’s required clearance from the ceiling and display, and its drivers must remain unobstructed.
Fireplace installations need extra caution
A fireplace often leads to a TV mounted too high, with the soundbar placed above it simply because there is nowhere else to go. That does not make the arrangement acoustically or ergonomically suitable. Check the TV and fireplace manufacturer’s heat and clearance requirements, and consider whether the television’s height—not the soundbar’s position—is the larger problem. For masonry, concealed wiring, high walls, or uncertain clearances, professional installation is sensible.
Atmos soundbars: clearance matters more than the label
Upward-firing Atmos drivers reflect sound from the ceiling. They need a reasonably clear path upward; placing the bar inside an enclosed cabinet, beneath a shelf, or close to the ceiling can reduce the usefulness of those drivers. A bar behind the plane of the TV may also have its microphones, side-firing drivers, or height drivers obstructed.
Mounting above the TV does not inherently create stronger height effects. Atmos performance depends on the soundbar’s driver layout, its distance and orientation relative to the ceiling, ceiling height and material, room shape, listening position, and calibration. Acoustic tiles, unusual ceiling geometry, or a very high ceiling may reduce reflected height effects. Dolby’s Atmos soundbar guidance generally favors a soundbar below the television, in front of the display, with a clear path to the ceiling.

Do not apply a universal gap or ceiling-height number. Use the exact requirements for the soundbar model. For example, the cited Sonos Arc guide specifies at least 4 inches (102 mm) between the bar and TV and recommends keeping both ends at least 1 foot (0.3 m) from walls or obstructions. Those are Arc-specific figures, not rules for every soundbar.
Cabinet placement versus wall mounting

Wall mounting does not automatically improve sound. It helps only when the resulting position removes an obstruction or improves alignment. A correctly positioned cabinet-mounted bar can outperform a badly positioned wall-mounted one.
Sony recommends placing a bar in front of the TV stand and checking that the TV sensor and remote control remain unobstructed. Sonos likewise recommends a stable, level surface and placing the bar at the front of a shelf rather than deep inside it. Do not lift a TV onto an unstable riser simply to fit a soundbar.

Placement checklist before drilling
- Read the exact installation guide. Confirm whether above-TV mounting is supported, the approved bracket, orientation, weight, mounting-hole pattern, and clearances.
- Fix the TV position first. Mark its final bottom edge and centerline.
- Measure the complete soundbar assembly. Include feet, brackets, cable plugs, depth, and any clearance needed by upward- or side-firing drivers.
- Center the bar with the screen. Keep the front face ahead of shelves or cabinet fronts and aim it toward the seating position.
- Check sensors and controls. Leave the TV’s infrared receiver and the soundbar’s microphones unobstructed.
- Preserve service access. Make sure HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, Ethernet, power, and reset connections are not strained or inaccessible.
- Assess the wall. Fasten to studs where possible. Otherwise use anchors rated for the wall type and the mount’s load. Check for hidden electrical wiring and plumbing before drilling.
- Use the supplied template and a level. Do not estimate hole positions.
- Verify stability. The mounted bar should not rock, slide, or pull away from the wall.
- Connect and calibrate. Use HDMI ARC/eARC or optical as appropriate, then run the manufacturer’s room-calibration process.
- Test from the main seat. Check dialogue height, stereo image, bass, remote operation, and Atmos effects before concealing cables.
Sony advises consulting the soundbar manual for wall-mounting dimensions, tools, and positioning, and contacting a dealer or licensed contractor when the installation is uncertain.

Choose the right kind of bracket
- Model-specific wall mount: usually the least uncertain fit for a compatible soundbar.
- Universal wall mount: more flexible, but verify weight, depth, mounting method, orientation, and driver clearance.
- TV-mounted soundbar bracket: often the best solution for a full-motion TV because the bar tracks the display.
- Professional installation: appropriate for masonry, difficult studs, concealed wiring, fireplaces, high walls, or expensive equipment.
Never assume a universal bracket will work. Check the soundbar’s exact model and generation, weight, dimensions, hole locations, and whether the bracket leaves microphones and Atmos drivers forward of the TV. A TV mount’s VESA pattern and load rating do not by themselves prove that a soundbar bracket is compatible.

Dialogue sounds too high or too low
- Check that the bar is horizontally centered.
- Move it closer to the TV.
- Angle it toward the seating position if the mount allows it.
- Use dialogue enhancement only after correcting the physical placement.
- Ensure the TV is not also playing its own speakers unless the system is designed for that configuration.
Atmos effects are weak
- Remove objects or shelves above the bar.
- Confirm that upward-firing drivers are uncovered.
- Check the model’s ceiling and clearance guidance.
- Re-run room calibration.
- Verify that the TV and source device are passing an Atmos-capable signal.
- Do not assume moving the bar above the TV will solve the problem.
The TV remote stops working
The soundbar may be blocking the TV’s infrared sensor. Move it forward, adjust its height, or change to a wall or TV-mounted position. HDMI-CEC may provide another control path, but its behavior is model-specific. Sony specifically warns that a bar placed too close to the front of the TV can cover the sensor.
The sound changes when the TV moves
A wall-mounted bar can become misaligned when a full-motion TV tilts or pulls forward. A TV-mount-attached bracket keeps the soundbar with the display, provided the bracket supports the combined load and movement.
Lip-sync is wrong
Placement is not normally the cause. Check HDMI ARC/eARC settings, TV processing, external-device routing, audio format compatibility, and the soundbar’s delay control. The exact menu path varies by product and software version; Sonos, for example, provides dialog synchronization controls in its product documentation.

Important exceptions
Projector screens
With a projector, the decision depends on the screen casing and listening geometry. Center the bar with the projected image, keep it from blocking the screen, and aim it toward the listener.
TVs with acoustic-surface speakers
Some compatible Sony BRAVIA televisions can work with compatible Sony equipment through features such as Acoustic Center Sync. This is a Sony-specific compatibility path, not a general property of TVs. Check the exact TV and soundbar models in Sony’s compatibility guidance.
Detachable, side-firing, or rear modules
A simple front-firing 2.0 or 2.1 bar generally has fewer placement constraints than an Atmos bar or a system with side-firing, detachable, or rear modules. Allow clearance for every active driver and follow the manufacturer’s orientation instructions.
Bottom line
Start with the soundbar below the TV: centered, close to the screen, stable, unobstructed, and approximately at seated ear level. Mount it above only when the room’s geometry makes below-TV placement worse and the soundbar’s manual supports the arrangement. Keep the TV at a comfortable height, protect the drivers and sensors, verify model-specific clearances, and choose a bracket rated for the wall, TV, and soundbar combination.
