Designed by AREP for SNCF Gares & Connexions and delivered in June 2024, it combines space for almost 1,200 bicycles with a photovoltaic roof. AREP reports a 170 kWp installed capacity, but its published annual generation figures differ: the project page says 175 MWh/year, while a 2025 book says 150 MWh/year.
What is the Solar Bicycle Hall?
The hall is part of the mobility hub on Gare du Nord’s east side, alongside a bus eco-station and forecourt. The station operator presents it as secure bicycle parking intended to support connections between cycling and rail. AREP describes the roof as shelter for cyclists and a surface for renewable electricity generation. Those are the project’s stated aims; the cited sources do not establish whether the facility has changed travel behavior since opening.

AREP lists the project as delivered in June 2024, with SNCF Gares & Connexions as client. The operator says funding for the secure bicycle parking project came 50% from Île-de-France Mobilités and 40% from the French state. How the structure is designed
Timber, steel and a photovoltaic roof
AREP describes a roof of about 1,700 m². Timber beams cross in an alternating butterfly pattern and rest on a galvanized steel frame. Photovoltaic glazing forms part of the roof, while skylights along the ridge bring daylight into the naturally ventilated space. The design therefore combines weather cover, daylight and electricity generation rather than treating the hall as a conventional enclosed building.

Reuse and references to the station
AREP says roughly forty reused glass panes from the Centre Pompidou caterpillar were incorporated into the skylights. It also says the hall follows the ten-metre grid associated with Jacques-Ignace Hittorff’s Gare du Nord work and is designed in dialogue with the Transilien hall’s 2001 glass roof. These are AREP’s descriptions of the design and its architectural references.
In a July 2024 publication, AREP president Raphaël Ménard described the hall as producing “electrons” and contributing to renewable rail and lower-carbon mobility. How many bicycles does it hold, and how much electricity does it produce?
AREP’s project page reports capacity for almost 1,200 bicycles, a photovoltaic capacity of 170 kWp and 1,100 m² of photovoltaic area. Its annual-generation figure is not consistent across its publications:

The publications do not say whether the difference reflects a revised estimate, a change in boundaries or another cause. Neither figure should be treated as verified generation in operation on the evidence available. The capacity statement is also phrased differently across the sources: the project page says almost 1,200 bicycles, while the 2025 book says more than 1,200 bicycle spaces. How much did the hall cost?
AREP’s 2025 book gives a €45 million construction cost for the broader Paris-Nord renovation and allocates €3.7 million to the bicycle hall. These are figures from the wider renovation publication, not a cost breakdown on the project page; they should not be confused with the funding percentages announced by the station operator.
