Mott MacDonald has been appointed to carry out the engineering design package for the East Coast Hydrogen programme. The award is for a defined FEED work package—not construction or delivery of the entire hydrogen network.
What design work did Mott MacDonald win?
Northern Gas Networks (NGN) awarded Mott MacDonald Limited Lot 1 in the East Coast Hydrogen FEED Design & PEC Work Packages procurement. The award notice was published on 8 June 2026. The appointment covers engineering design within the programme’s front-end engineering design (FEED) work; it does not make Mott MacDonald the contractor for building the full network. The procurement separated engineering design from planning, environmental and consents services. RSK Environment Limited received Lot 2 for those services, so the two awards cover distinct parts of the work package. Procurement award notice

Which programme does the appointment support?
East Coast Hydrogen is a collaboration between National Gas, Northern Gas Networks and Cadent. Its stated aim is to connect planned hydrogen production and storage with industrial users across the region, using a combination of new and repurposed pipework. The programme is intended to help decarbonise industry; that is an objective, not evidence of emissions reductions already achieved. East Coast Hydrogen project overview
#1 Best Overall
- Horizon puts renewable energy technology into the hands of our future scientists
- Solar Hydrogen Education Kit generates clean energy using the sun
- Renewable hydrogen is created using only solar energy and water
- Combining cutting-edge science, education and fun for all!
- Includes fuel cell, small electric motor, propeller blade, experiment manual and assembly guide
Where is the proposed infrastructure intended to serve?
The project overview identifies the Humber, Yorkshire and the East Midlands as intended industrial supply areas. The proposed network would link production and storage with industrial demand in those areas. The overview describes the programme’s intended reach, not a completed route or a list of operating connections. East Coast Hydrogen project overview
What are the stated scale and timetable?
East Coast Hydrogen says the programme could connect up to 11 GW of hydrogen production capacity and up to 4 TWh of hydrogen storage by 2030. These are potential capacity figures and a target horizon: they do not mean the facilities or pipelines are already operational or committed. East Coast Hydrogen project overview

A 2026 report excerpt from Northern Gas Networks describes £96 million in regulatory funding for three FEED studies during 2025–2027. The studies cover engineering, planning and environmental assessments, and stakeholder consultation. This is programme funding, not Mott MacDonald’s individual contract fee. Quick Recap
Best Value
- Name: Hydrogen Fuel Cell
- Type: PEM
- Size: 50x50MM
- Electrochemical device, no pollution, no harmful substances emission
- Exquisite workmanship, compact size, portable and easy to use
Rank #4
- 1. Electrical part: motor with wind shoulder, ammeter, voltmeter.
- 2. Ammonia fuel cell.Hydrogen's electrons travel from the anode to the cathode through an external circuit, generating an electric current. At the cathode, the electrons, protons, and oxygen in the air combine to produce water, which is the main by-product of the fuel cell.
- 3. PEM (proton exchange) water electrolyzer.Gaseous hydrogen is sent to the anode of the membrane, and air is sent to the cathode. The hydrogen atoms are stripped of electrons on the anode side, and the positively charged protons pass through the membrane to reach the cathode. In order for this reaction to occur, a platinum catalyst must be used.
- 4. The two proton exchange membrane electrodes in the organic base and the presenter are 35mm*35mm. Experimental steps. Add deionized water to the water level in the PEM water electrolyzer. The amount of water should not be too much to prevent water from flowing into the battery. After adding water, connect the hydrogen gas outlet on the water electrolyzer to the hydrogen gas inlet on the electrical energy with a gas pipe.
- 5.Then connect the 6V-12V DC power supply to the positive and negative wiring of the water electrolyzer part, and connect the transportation line of the electrical part to the electric energy after 2-3 minutes, the small motor starts to work, and the current is displayed on the current and voltmeter. Positive value.
Rank #3
- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
What the appointment does—and does not—establish
- Mott MacDonald has the engineering-design lot within the FEED procurement; the award is not a whole-network construction contract.
- The programme envisages both new pipeline sections and reuse of existing pipework, but the project overview does not establish that a final route has been built or is operating.
- The 2030 production and storage figures are stated ambitions, while the 2025–2027 period relates to the FEED studies described in the 2026 report excerpt.
