The right combination depends on local soil, climate, slope, crops and equipment; no single method suits every field.
What soil conservation does
Soil conservation is the management of land to reduce soil loss and protect its capacity to support crops. On agricultural land, exposed or frequently disturbed soil is more vulnerable to erosion. Conservation practices help shield the surface, slow water movement, and maintain conditions that support water infiltration and nutrient cycling.
FAO describes conservation agriculture as a system built on three principles: minimum mechanical soil disturbance, permanent soil cover, and diversification of plant species. USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) uses a related cropland soil-health framework that also emphasizes continuous living roots. These are complementary management principles, not a single required recipe.
Methods of soil conservation
Cover crops
Cover crops are planted during periods when a field would otherwise be bare or fallow. They can protect and stabilize soil, reduce erosion and chemical runoff, improve infiltration, and increase organic matter and nutrient availability compared with leaving fields fallow. NRCS summarizes their role this way: “Cover crops support soil conservation, enhance soil health, and improve performance of crops planted later on the same land.” USDA NRCS, Cover Crops for Soil Health

Success depends on choosing suitable species and managing planting time, biomass and termination to fit the following crop and local conditions. NRCS’s cover-crop practice standard provides planning criteria; local adaptations add detail.
Crop residues and mulch
Leaving crop residue or applying mulch creates a protective surface layer. Cover helps limit the impact of raindrops, reduces erosion and allows more water to enter the soil. Mulch can also inhibit moisture evaporation and support infiltration into the soil profile. FAO, Soil organic cover; USDA AMS, Soil Conservation

- STURDY AND SCIENTIFIC DESIGN: Reliable materials and upgraded technology used for this soil meter make it advanced and high-quality for long-term use.
- MULTIPURPOSE SOIL TEST KIT: Portable and compact design enables you to use this soil meter for house garden, farm, lawn and any other soil & plant analysis. Ideal for indoor and outdoor use.
Reduced tillage and no-till
Reducing mechanical disturbance can keep more residue on the surface and reduce the period when soil is exposed. NRCS identifies possible benefits including less erosion, better moisture retention, and lower fuel and labor use. These outcomes depend on the farming system and site; reduced tillage or no-till should be considered alongside cover, crop diversity and other management choices, rather than treated as a guaranteed yield or profit improvement. USDA NRCS, Soil Health on Cropland
Contour farming and contour buffer strips
On suitable sloping land, contour practices follow the shape of the land rather than running straight downhill. USDA recognizes contour farming and contour buffer strips as conservation practices. Their design and placement need to account for the site; consult the applicable local technical standard and a conservation professional rather than applying a generic layout. Diversified rotations and living roots
Rotating different plant species and maintaining living roots for more of the year can contribute to soil cover, structure, nutrient cycling and biological activity. Crop choices should fit the region, production goals and rotation. In the FAO framework, diversification works together with reduced disturbance and soil cover; NRCS also highlights continuous living roots as a soil-health principle. FAO, Conservation Agriculture
Potential benefits
- Less erosion: Cover and reduced disturbance can protect soil from raindrop impact and reduce exposure to erosion.
- Improved water movement and retention: Soil cover can support infiltration, while residues and mulch help limit moisture loss from the surface.
- Soil organic matter and nutrient cycling: Cover crops, diverse plantings and living roots can contribute organic material and support nutrient availability and cycling.
- Water-quality co-benefits: Practices that reduce erosion or chemical runoff may also help protect water resources.
- More resilient soil management: A system that combines cover, roots, diversity and appropriate disturbance can support biodiversity and natural biological processes.
These are potential benefits, not guaranteed results. Outcomes depend on establishment, timing, site conditions and how practices work together.

How to choose practices for a field
Start with the resource concern and the field’s conditions. A practice that protects a sloping field from runoff may not address the same risks as a cover crop planted during a bare period. Consider:
- Where erosion occurs and whether it is driven by runoff, exposed soil or field operations.
- How much soil cover is present now, and when the field is most likely to be bare.
- Local soil, rainfall and climate, slope, and the crops in the rotation.
- Available equipment, planting windows, biomass needs and termination requirements.
- Whether the practice fits with other management measures and applicable local standards.
There is no universal ranking that makes one method best for all farms. Conservation agriculture is a system of mutually reinforcing principles, while individual practices should be selected for the field and production system.

Where to get planning guidance
In the United States, NRCS national conservation practice standards set minimum science-based criteria, while state adaptations account for local conditions and regulations. For site-specific planning, consult the relevant NRCS Field Office Technical Guide or a qualified conservation professional. A national overview can explain a practice, but it is not a field design.
