Yes, the October 20, 2025 AWS outage caused a genuine problem for some Eight Sleep customers. Users reported losing app-based temperature control, sleeping in excessive heat, and being unable to flatten an inclined adjustable base. So the accurate description is that some users lost normal control of their connected sleep systems. It is not accurate to say that every Eight Sleep bed overheated or that every adjustable base became permanently stuck.
What happened to AWS?
AWS recorded increased error rates and latency affecting multiple services in its US-EAST-1 region in Northern Virginia during the October 19–20, 2025 service event. The relevant AWS Health record is available in the AWS Health Dashboard.
AWS did not directly issue commands to raise beds or incline bases. The more precise chain was likely:
- The Pod and, for some owners, the adjustable Base remained connected to local hardware.
- The Eight Sleep app and backend services depended on internet connectivity and cloud infrastructure.
- The AWS disruption affected one or more of those backend dependencies.
- Some users could no longer send ordinary temperature or positioning commands through the app.
- Without a local fallback, a system could remain in its existing thermal or mechanical state.
Eight Sleep’s later introduction of Bluetooth-based Backup Mode supports the conclusion that loss of cloud or Wi-Fi access was the central control problem. However, the available evidence does not prove the exact architecture behind every command or show that AWS was the sole dependency in every case.
Why an internet-connected bed can fail this way
An Eight Sleep setup is more than a mattress accessory. The current Pod 5 is a water-based temperature-control and sleep-tracking system that sits on top of an existing mattress. Eight Sleep advertises independent heating and cooling for each side, sleep and health metrics, vibration and thermal alarms, and a temperature range of 55°F to 110°F on its current product page.
The optional Eight Sleep Base is separate from the Pod cover. It can elevate the upper body for reading, sleeping, snoring-related positioning, or zero-gravity-style support. The current product page lists the Base as 3 inches thick and supporting up to 750 pounds, but those specifications should not automatically be applied to older models.
That distinction matters because the outage involved two different categories of function:

Did AWS make the beds reach 110°F?
There is no evidence in the supplied reporting that all outage-affected Pods reached 110°F. That figure is the current product page’s advertised maximum heating capability, not a measured outage temperature for every user.
A careful description is: some users said their Pods remained too warm or became difficult to cool after cloud connectivity failed. The AWS outage coincided with those reports, but the available evidence does not establish that every unit heated continuously, reached the same temperature, or was physically damaged.
Were users permanently stuck upright?
Some owners reported being unable to flatten an inclined bed through the normal app-based controls. That does not establish a permanent motor failure. “Stuck upright” may describe a temporary inability to issue the flattening command while cloud-dependent control was unavailable.
Public reporting does not establish:
- How many adjustable bases were affected.
- Whether every Base generation was involved.
- Whether manual controls or power cycling worked for every owner.

Eight Sleep CEO Matteo Franceschetti acknowledged that the AWS outage disrupted sleep for some customers, apologized, and said the company was working to restore features and make the Pod experience more resilient. On October 22, 2025, Eight Sleep announced Backup Mode.
Backup Mode allows the app to communicate directly with a nearby paired Pod over Bluetooth when cloud or Wi-Fi infrastructure is unavailable. Eight Sleep says the feature is intended to provide limited critical controls while normal service is down.
What Backup Mode can do
According to Eight Sleep’s explanation, Backup Mode can provide the following controls:
- Turn the Pod on or off.
- Change temperature levels.
- Flatten the Base.
- Stop sounds.
- Dismiss or snooze alarms.
Eight Sleep says Backup Mode can be enabled when a cloud outage is detected. It also says the mode activates automatically after the Pod has lost Wi-Fi connectivity for five minutes. While operating locally, some Autopilot functions are temporarily suspended or limited.

This is an important improvement, but it is not the same as full offline operation. Bluetooth range, phone battery, pairing status, Bluetooth settings, app availability, electrical power, hardware condition, and the exact failure mode can all affect whether the fallback works.
What happens to sleep data?
Eight Sleep says the Pod can store data and events locally during an outage and synchronize them with the backend after service returns. The company says this allows Autopilot to complete processing later.
That is a manufacturer statement rather than an independently audited result. It also does not mean every cloud feature continues to operate during the outage. Local control and later data synchronization are different capabilities.
What remains unknown
Public evidence does not establish:
- The total number or percentage of affected customers.
- The exact duration of the problem for individual users.
- The precise temperatures reached by particular Pods.
- Whether all hardware generations were affected in the same way.
- Whether current Backup Mode works identically across every model, phone, app version, and subscription state.
- What happens during a complete power outage.
- Whether all basic functions remain available after a membership lapse.
Those gaps matter for anyone evaluating a product that controls both comfort and physical positioning. A fallback announced by the manufacturer is encouraging, but it should not be treated as proof that every outage scenario has been independently tested.

What owners should do if control is lost
- Open the Eight Sleep app. Look for an outage notice or Backup Mode indication.
- Stay near the paired Pod. Bluetooth control may depend on proximity and an existing pairing relationship.
- Try only the available critical controls. Check temperature, power, and Base-flattening options if Backup Mode appears.
- Avoid extreme settings. Do not select an aggressive heating or cooling level if you cannot verify that the system is responding normally.
- Leave an uncomfortably hot bed. Use ordinary room cooling or another sleeping surface rather than waiting in unsafe or intolerable conditions.
- Do not force an inclined Base manually. The available official material does not provide a universal emergency release or reset procedure.
- Contact Eight Sleep support. Do this if Backup Mode does not appear or the Pod or Base remains unresponsive.
People who depend on a specific sleeping angle for a medical condition should be especially cautious. Confirm a manual or wired fallback before relying on an internet-connected adjustable bed.

1. Offline control
Ask whether temperature and positioning can be controlled without Wi-Fi, internet access, or the vendor’s cloud. Confirm whether Bluetooth is required, whether a paired smartphone is necessary, and whether the controls work when the app cannot authenticate with the backend.
2. Failure behavior
Find out what happens after a cloud outage, a home Wi-Fi failure, and a power failure. Ideally, essential functions should degrade to a safe, neutral state rather than simply remaining wherever they were when communication stopped.
3. Manual and wired overrides
Before buying an adjustable Base, ask whether it has a wired controller, emergency release, manual flattening method, or other local override. Do not assume that a Bluetooth fallback replaces a true mechanical backup.

Eight Sleep’s U.S. pricing page displayed these membership signals on August 18, 2026:

The current U.S. pages displayed a Pod 5 Cover price of $1,499, a Pod 5 system price of $2,999, and an optional Base price of $1,999. A separate page showed a Queen configuration totaling $3,298 including an Autopilot plan. These are different configurations and dated price signals, not one universal product price.
Eight Sleep also displayed a 30-night risk-free trial and free returns on its product materials. Its financing page described Affirm financing, including possible 0% APR over 36 months for eligible customers, while noting that approved rates can range from 0% to 36% APR. Check the current terms before committing.

The Pod tracks sleep and health-related metrics, including measures such as heart rate, heart-rate variability, sleep phases, and respiratory information. Review data retention, account deletion, third-party sharing, and privacy terms before purchase.
Also consider what happens if the manufacturer changes its software, plans, backend, or support policy. A conventional mattress and non-connected adjustable base have fewer automated features, but they also have fewer cloud dependencies.

A resilient design would separate nonessential cloud features from essential local controls. Sleep reports, personalization, and long-term analytics can wait for service restoration. Temperature adjustment, powering down, alarms, and returning an adjustable platform to a neutral position deserve a dependable local path.
Alternatives for reliability-first buyers
Readers who do not want cloud or subscription dependence can consider:
- A conventional mattress with a non-connected adjustable base: fewer automated features, but generally more local operation.
- Non-connected temperature-control products: cooling pads, breathable bedding, fans, room air conditioning, or standalone toppers that do not depend on a vendor backend.
