Ring Halloween sounds usually affect either the Ring app on your phone or an indoor Ring Chime—not the speaker on the outside of the doorbell. To change the phone alert, open Menu (☰) → Devices → your Video Doorbell → Alert Settings → App Alert Tones. For an indoor Halloween sound, open Devices → Chime or Chime Pro → Device Settings → Audio Settings → Chime Tones.
These sounds are seasonal, so the Halloween option may appear only during Ring’s seasonal rollout and may vary by country, device, and app version.
Before you start
- Install and sign in to the Ring app.
- Make sure your Video Doorbell is already added to your Ring account.
- Have a Ring Chime or Chime Pro if you want the sound to play indoors.
- Update the Ring app if the menus or seasonal tones are missing.
- Remember that Halloween sounds may not be available year-round.
Ring’s current documentation uses slightly different labels in some app versions. You may see App Alert Tones, Ring Alerts, or a nested Sound option. The menu names can also differ between iPhone and Android.

- Tap Devices.
- Select the relevant Video Doorbell.
- Tap Alert Settings.
- Tap App Alert Tones.
- Choose the sound for Doorbell rings, Motion alerts, or both.
- Select a Halloween tone if one is listed.
Ring supports separate sounds for doorbell presses and motion alerts, so changing one does not necessarily change the other. Test the exact event you configured: press the button to test Doorbell Rings, or walk in front of the camera to test Motion Detected.
For related menu variations, see Ring’s official instructions for setting up alert tones and its alert-management guide.
Change the Halloween sound on a Ring Chime or Chime Pro
A Ring Chime is the better option when everyone in the house needs to hear the alert rather than only the person carrying a phone.
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap Devices.
- Select your Chime, Chime Plus, or Chime Pro.
- Tap Device Settings.
- Tap Audio Settings.
- Tap Chime Tones.
- Select Doorbell Rings or Motion Detected.
- Choose the Halloween tone if it appears.
- Tap Save.
Ring has previously offered seasonal sounds such as ghostly or creepy effects, but names and availability can change. The Halloween tones described in Ring’s older seasonal announcement are examples of a past catalog, not a guarantee that the same choices will be listed in 2026. See Ring’s Halloween feature announcement for the historical feature description.

Link the Chime to your doorbell
Changing the Chime tone is not enough if the Chime is not linked to the doorbell or if the relevant event is disabled.
- In the Ring app, tap Menu (☰) → Devices.
- Select your Video Doorbell.
- Tap Linked Chimes.
- Select Rings for doorbell-button presses.
- Optionally select Motion Detected for motion alerts.
- Tap the music-note icon to preview the tone.
- Tap Save.
Ring’s Chime-linking instructions cover event selection, tone previews, and saving. Check both the doorbell’s linked-device settings and the Chime’s audio settings if the device remains silent.
Can visitors hear the Halloween sound outside?
Usually, no—not from the standard Chime or phone-tone settings. An app alert changes what the owner hears on a phone. A Chime tone changes what people hear from the indoor Chime. Neither setting should be treated as a guaranteed replacement for the sound emitted by the doorbell’s exterior speaker.
If you want the visitor to hear a response, check whether your doorbell supports Quick Replies. Quick Replies play a preselected message after someone rings; they are a visitor-facing response rather than a simple replacement chime.

- True color, even in low light — With Low-Light Sight, just a little ambient light gives you true color video. In total darkness, your camera switches to crisp black-and-white to keep details sharp.
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap Menu (☰) → Devices.
- Select the doorbell.
- Tap Smart Responses.
- Tap Quick Replies.
- Tap Turn Feature On.
- Choose a response time.
- Choose a message and tap Save.
Ring says Quick Replies do not require a subscription, and the response time can be set immediately or from 2 to 20 seconds. However, a Halloween-specific message may not be available in every country, model, or seasonal catalog. Choose it only if a Halloween message appears in your account. Ring’s Quick Replies support page lists the current setup requirements.
Halloween sound missing? Try these fixes
- Check seasonal timing. Ring’s Halloween tones may be released only for a specific seasonal period. Community guidance indicates that seasonal Chime sounds can disappear outside the relevant rollout window.
- Update and restart the Ring app. Updating may expose a newer catalog or menu, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Open the correct device. Phone tones are under the doorbell’s alert settings. Chime tones are under the Chime or Chime Pro’s audio settings.
- Check both event types. A sound selected for motion will not necessarily play when someone presses the button, and vice versa.
- Verify Chime linking. Open Doorbell → Linked Chimes and make sure Rings is selected for button presses.
- Check volume and Chime Snooze. The Chime may be muted, set too low, or temporarily suppressed by Chime Snooze.
- Test phone and Chime separately. Press the doorbell while checking the indoor Chime, then check the phone’s notification independently.
- Check region and model availability. Seasonal catalogs and supported features can vary by market and device.
- Close and reopen the app. If necessary, sign out and back in before checking the menu again.
You can find additional model-specific guidance in Ring’s article on configuring and troubleshooting an in-home chime.
Why is the sound cut off on an iPhone?
Ring says longer alert tones can be cut off prematurely on devices running iOS 16, because of an iOS notification limitation. Ring states that iOS 17 resolves the issue for individual notifications, although multiple notifications can still cause cutoffs. The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone XS cannot update to iOS 17.
This is primarily a phone playback issue. If a Ring Chime cuts off or stays silent, investigate Chime linking, volume, the selected event, and the Chime’s own settings instead.

Does the Ring doorbell model matter?
Ring presents app alert-tone instructions broadly for Video Doorbells, but individual models may not expose identical menus or support identical in-home-chime arrangements.
Ring lists several products that do not support a traditional hardwired in-home chime, including:
- Video Doorbell Wired
- Wired Doorbell Plus, 2nd Gen
- Wired Doorbell Pro, 3rd Gen, except when powered by PoE
- Peephole Cam or Door View Cam
For those setups, Ring says a Ring Chime, Chime Pro, or compatible Amazon Alexa device may provide indoor alerts. A Chime adds an indoor alert endpoint; it does not turn the outdoor doorbell speaker into a Halloween speaker. If a menu is absent, identify the exact doorbell and Chime model in the Ring app before assuming the feature is broken.

Return to the same phone or Chime menu and select the standard or default tone shown in your available catalog. Ring does not provide one universal reset control for every device and app version, so do not assume that deleting and reinstalling the app will restore a particular sound.

| Halloween sound on phone | Doorbell → Alert Settings → App Alert Tones |

If you only want a different phone notification, no extra hardware is necessary. If you want an audible alert throughout the house, a Ring Chime is the directly relevant hardware option. A Chime Pro may suit households that also need its additional model-specific capabilities, but it is not necessary solely for Halloween sounds. Prices, stock, and bundles should be checked on the official product pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Ring Halloween sounds available all year?
Not necessarily. Ring treats Halloween tones as seasonal options, and availability can vary by time of year, country, device, and app version.
Will a Ring Chime change the sound visitors hear outside?
No. A Ring Chime changes the indoor alert. The phone setting changes the owner’s notification. Visitors may hear a separate Quick Reply if the compatible doorbell and account offer a Halloween message.
Do I need a Ring Protect subscription to use Quick Replies?
Ring says Quick Replies do not require a subscription, although compatibility and message availability can vary.
Why does the Halloween tone play for motion but not when the doorbell is pressed?
Ring lets you configure Doorbell Rings and Motion Detected separately. Select and test the event type you actually want.
The Bottom Line
For a Halloween sound on your phone, use Doorbell → Alert Settings → App Alert Tones. For an indoor sound, use Chime → Device Settings → Audio Settings → Chime Tones, then verify the Chime is linked under Doorbell → Linked Chimes. Treat seasonal availability and visitor-facing playback as separate issues.
