JUKI lists one for its TL Series, part A9839-090-AA0; it is not established as compatible with other machines.
What a small-hole plate does
A throat plate with a smaller needle opening gives lightweight fabric less open space to sink into as it passes beneath the needle. JUKI says its TL Series thin-fabric plate helps keep lightweight materials from entering the needle hole and helps prevent stitching shrinkage. That is the manufacturer’s product description, not a universal performance guarantee.
Choose the plate for the machine and fabric
TL Series thin-fabric plate
JUKI lists the TL Series Throat Plate for Thin Fabric as part A9839-090-AA0. The product is intended for lightweight materials and JUKI recommends needle sizes #9 to #11 for this plate. Thin- and thick-fabric plates are different
JUKI’s TL accessory catalog distinguishes the small-hole thin-fabric plate from a thick-fabric plate with a larger needle hole. The catalog recommends #9–#11 needles for the thin-fabric plate and #16–#18 for the thick-fabric plate. Optional straight-stitch plate
A straight-stitch plate is a separate, model-specific option. JUKI describes its listed plate as useful for straight stitching on lightweight fabrics and patchwork piecing, and specifies use with straight feed dog 40201411 on the cited product page. JUKI’s accessory detail page lists plate part numbers and applicable models; check those details for the exact machine, and verify whether the required feed dog is included or must be obtained separately. Check compatibility before installing or buying
- Identify the exact machine model. Do not choose a plate based on appearance or the phrase “zero-clearance” alone.
- Match the part to the model. Use the manufacturer’s applicable-model information or confirm with the machine manual or an authorized dealer.
- Check the feed system. For the cited JUKI straight-stitch setup, confirm the straight feed dog requirement and whether it is supplied with the plate.
- Follow machine-specific installation guidance. The cited sources do not establish a universal installation method or a machine-agnostic way to make a homemade insert. Consult the manual or manufacturer/dealer before modifying the machine.
Why tape is not an established substitute
A community post describes putting painter’s tape with a line on it on a throat plate as a seam-guide workaround. That anecdote does not show that tape covering a needle opening is a safe or reliable zero-clearance insert.
