Tom Whalley’s WOOD Magazine project shows how to build and use that sled for repeatable angled cuts. The complete project is described in WOOD Magazine’s “Segmented Bowl Precision Angle Sled”, updated April 22, 2025.
Start with the ring geometry
Choose how many equal segments will make one ring. Divide 360 degrees by that number to find the included angle at each joint, then divide that result by two to determine the angle cut on each end of a segment.
| Ring plan | Calculation | Angle on each segment end |
|---|---|---|
| 12 segments | 360° ÷ 12 = 30° at each joint; 30° ÷ 2 | 15° |
| Any other segment count | 360° ÷ number of segments, then halve the result | Half of the included joint angle |
More segments produce narrower pieces and a different visual rhythm; fewer segments produce wider pieces. Keep the calculation tied to the ring you are actually building, because changing the segment count changes the sled-fence angle.
Prepare the saw before building or using the sled
- Verify that the blade is 90 degrees to the saw table.
- Check that the blade is parallel to the table-saw miter-gauge slot.
- Use a stable 3/4-inch plywood sled base.
- Fit a hardwood runner to the miter-gauge slot so the sled travels without side play.
These alignment checks matter because a sled can repeat an error just as reliably as it repeats a correct cut.

Build the two-fence precision sled
Lay out the opposing fences
The sled uses two fences set to opposing layout lines. A digital angle finder is useful for transferring the calculated angle to the plywood base. Mark both fence locations, keeping the intended blade path and the sled’s travel clear.
Fasten the fences and make the stopped kerf
- Position the two fences on their opposing lines and screw them to the sled base.
- With the sled aligned to the miter slot, make a stopped cut through the base and fences.
- Leave the base’s chamfered edge attached; it becomes an offramp that supports the cut pieces as they leave the blade.
- Apply adhesive-backed sandpaper to the fence faces if extra grip is needed, but keep the abrasive clear of the blade path.
The result is a sled that guides a blank against one angled fence, then the other, without changing the angle setup between cuts.

- 【Dual bearings for smoother sanding】Our RUITOOL bowl sander uses a dual-bearing assembly designed for long life. The dual bearings run cooler and with less friction, keeping rotation steady, cutting vibration, and preventing the head from sticking under load. The result is smoother sanding, reduced snags, lower heat build-up, and more reliable control and safety during tough curved work.
- 【Flexible head design】The head angle is quickly adjusted via the knob so the foam backing on the bowl sander stays flat against inside bowls, shallow arcs and tight contours. That keeps contact consistent, reduces gouging and cuts down the passes needed for a clean finish.
- 【Durable, comfortable metal handle】Our bowl sander’s aluminum-alloy handle won’t crack and resists rust. It has an ergonomic anti-slip surface and longer reach to keep your hands farther from the spinning work for better comfort and safety during long turning sessions.
- 【Foam pads conform to curves】Foam-backed sanding heads on the bowl sander flex to match the profile of bowls and tight contours, keeping the disc flat against the workpiece. This close conformity prevents edge lifting and scalloping, so you can use less pressure, make fewer passes, and get a smooth finish every time.
- 【Complete tool set inclusion】Includes 1 metal handle with dual-bearing head assembly, 3 interface foam pads & 3 firm pad holder mandrels(1", 2", 3"), 75 pre-cut sanding discs (15 each of 60, 80, 120, 220 and 320 grit) and installation tool for your bowl sander.
Cut equal, repeatable segments
Set the length with a stopblock
Cut blanks from the selected wood species at a consistent thickness. Place a stopblock on the infeed side of the blade to establish the segment length for the current bowl layer. A new stopblock setting is needed when the profile calls for a different length.
Use the alternating-fence sequence
- Trim the blank’s first end against the rear fence.
- Move the blank to the front fence and cut the first segment against the stopblock.
- Continue alternating the blank between the rear and front fences.
- Keep the same face against the sled for every cut so the pieces share the same reference surface.
- Change the stopblock setting for successive layers when you want the bowl wall to expand or contract.
For scale, the WOOD Magazine example of an approximately 6-inch-rim bowl uses segment lengths from about 7/8 inch to 1 1/2 inches, increasing by roughly 1/8 inch per layer. Those dimensions describe that example, not a universal bowl specification.

Glue each ring without losing alignment
- Lay out all the pieces for one ring before applying glue so grain direction and color are where you want them.
- Spread glue on an angled end, using enough adhesive for end grain, which absorbs more glue than long grain.
- Join the next piece and rub the joint briefly to help it tack.
- Continue around the ring, then wrap the assembly with masking tape while the glue sets.
- After curing, remove the tape, sand away squeeze-out, and flatten both ring faces.
Flat ring faces are essential: any high spot or hollow becomes a gap or a tilted layer in the bowl blank.
Stack the rings into a turning blank
Dry-fit before committing to glue
Place the cured rings together without adhesive. Check the mating faces for gaps and decide how the grain and color will flow. Rotate each layer so the joints are offset from the joints in the layer below; this distributes seams instead of creating a continuous weak line.

Glue, clamp, and add the bottom
- Apply glue between the prepared rings.
- Align the offset joints and clamp the stack with plywood cauls to spread pressure.
- Allow the adhesive to cure fully before removing the clamps.
- Fit and glue a solid bottom to the ring stack.
- Once the assembled blank is secure, mount it on the lathe and begin turning.
The sled determines the repeatability of the pieces; careful ring preparation and stacking determine whether that accuracy survives into a stable blank.

Segments vary in length
- Confirm the stopblock is firmly fixed on the infeed side.
- Use the same blank face against the sled every time.
- Check that the runner fits the miter slot without allowing the sled to yaw.
Ring joints show gaps
- Recheck blade-to-table squareness and blade-to-slot parallelism.
- Make sure both fences remain firmly attached and at the calculated opposing angles.
- Flatten the cured ring faces before stacking; do not use clamping force to compensate for uneven faces.
The ring slips during cutting
Use the fence-face sandpaper described for the sled, keeping it outside the blade path, and maintain controlled pressure against the active fence.
Best Value

- 1/4 IN MANDREL COMPATIBILITY: Works with standard 1/4 in shanks; includes bowl sanding mandrel and 3 brass bushings to fit varying shank lengths. Swap heads and bowl sanding pads in seconds.
- DUAL‑BEARING RELIABILITY: Two steel bearings deliver ultra‑smooth mandrel rotation, avoiding stalls that can leave marks—professional results faster with less pressure.
What this method does—and does not—promise
This is a reader-built sled and process, not a test of commercial jigs or competing machines. Its advantage is repeatable geometry from one setup: the stopblock controls length while the opposing fences create the two angled ends. Final bowl shape still depends on the segment count, the lengths selected for each layer, the quality of the ring faces, and the accuracy of the glue-up.
