The upgraded Zen is a one-legged portable stool with a telescoping leg and folding seat-support arms. New Atlas reported in January 2025 that the upgrade adds a wider, more cushioned seat, a stronger leg-locking mechanism, a rubber foot with an aluminum core, and a seat pocket for carrying the folded stool. Those changes come from the manufacturer’s product description and the reporter’s account. None of them was independently tested in the sources, and Sitpack’s current product listing is the place to confirm the model you are buying.
What the Zen is
Sitpack currently lists the stool as the ZEN X, with an aircraft-grade aluminum frame and an Oxford 600D ripstop nylon seat, according to its current product page. The manufacturer describes a Y-shaped suspended seat, an integrated storage pocket, and quick deployment. Those are Sitpack’s own descriptions of the product, not results from an outside test.
What the upgrade changes
New Atlas’s January 20, 2025 report by Ben Coxworth describes four changes. Each one below is the reporter’s account of the upgraded design.
A wider, more cushioned seat
The seat is described as wider than before. It sits on a flexible recycled HDPE inner platform and is covered with quilted memory foam. The report presents this as the basis for the “comfier” part of the upgrade. No comfort testing is cited, so treat the claim as a design description until you have sat on one.

A stronger leg lock
The leg tubes are locked by a thermoplastic mechanism that the report calls stronger than the earlier version. The telescoping leg is the part of the stool that changes height, so the lock is the component to check each time you extend it. The report does not give a locking force or cycle rating.
A rubber foot with an aluminum core
The single foot is rubber with an aluminum core. The report describes this as the strengthened foot. It does not describe a footprint size, a ground-contact tread, or how the foot performs on soft or sloped surfaces.

New Atlas gave a claimed weight for each of two models. These figures come from Sitpack’s 2025 information as reported by New Atlas. They are not weights measured by an independent lab, and they may not match the current listing.

What the sources do not establish
- Maximum user weight or load capacity. Neither the manufacturer page nor the report gives a rated limit. Words such as “stronger” and “more durable” describe the design, not a rating.
- Independent comfort or durability testing. The comfort, strength, and foot-grip claims are descriptions from Sitpack and the reporter.
- Current price, stock, dimensions, and warranty. These change over time and are not established by the January 2025 report.
- Whether the carbon-fiber model is still sold. The current listing names only an aluminum frame.
Checking the current listing before you buy
- Open the Sitpack product page and confirm the model is listed as ZEN X and the frame is aluminum.
- Look for a stated maximum load. If none is given, contact Sitpack in writing before using the stool for any work-related load.
- Compare the listed weight with the 570 g and 670 g figures above. A different number means the design or listing has changed since January 2025.
- Check the price, stock, and warranty on the live Sitpack page or an authorized retailer’s page, and save a copy of the terms at the time of purchase.
- Read the care instructions for the seat fabric and the leg lock before the first use.
Using a one-legged stool on a construction site
A single-leg stool puts all of the user’s weight through one leg and one foot. That makes the lock and the foot the points to inspect first. Before each use, extend the leg fully, confirm the lock engages, and check the foot is seated on firm ground. On soft, wet, or sloped surfaces, a single foot can shift, so a site-level decision is needed before the stool is used on uneven ground. Because the sources do not give a load rating, the stool should not be treated as rated for tradework until the manufacturer confirms a limit for the model you own. The upgrade’s changes are real design descriptions, but the safe-use decision depends on a written rating, which the current sources do not provide.
