WOOD Magazine’s Arts & Crafts Wine Rack plan is a freestanding oak-and-oak-plywood project measuring 18¾ inches wide, 14 inches deep and 37½ inches high. Build it as a wine rack with 12 bottle stops, or omit those stops to make the same piece a display stand. Its construction uses biscuit and butt joints, so plan on a biscuit joiner and careful layout before cutting.
What the plan builds
The design is a tall, freestanding Arts & Crafts/Mission-style cabinet intended either to hold wine bottles or display objects. WOOD Magazine lists the finished size as 18¾ inches wide × 14 inches deep × 37½ inches high. Follow the full plan, including the step to make and install 12 bottle stops. The stops are the defining added feature for the wine-rack version.
Display stand
For the display-stand variation, skip the bottle-stop step. The rest of the piece retains the same freestanding form.

The plan page does not state a bottle capacity. The 12 stops are components, not a published capacity rating, so do not treat that count as the number of bottles the finished rack will hold.
Materials, tools and joinery
The plan specifies solid oak and oak plywood. Its components include legs, rails, slats, shelves, a back, bottle stops, corbels, a top and shelf supports. The materials list and cutting diagram provide the dimensions for the individual parts; use those rather than estimating cut sizes from the finished dimensions.

WOOD describes the construction as “simple, consisting of biscuit and butt joinery.” The instructions call for #0 biscuits to join the slats and #20 biscuits at the leg-and-rail joints and where the case meets the side assemblies. A biscuit joiner is therefore a core tool for following this plan as written. The listed equipment also includes a table saw, jigsaw, shelf-pin jig, clamps and sanding supplies. Hardware and consumables include Z-clips, shelf supports, screws, wood glue, stain and clearcoat.
Build sequence and details that matter
- Cut and shape the frame parts. Prepare the legs, rails and slats to the plan’s dimensions and profiles.
- Assemble the side frames. Use #0 biscuits for the slats and #20 biscuits to join the legs and rails. Check the frames for square while clamping.
- Let the glue dry before final sanding. WOOD advises leaving the side assemblies overnight before final sanding: biscuits swell with glue and can shrink as they dry, leaving divots if the surfaces are sanded too soon.
- Make the shelves and case panels. Cut the shelves from ¾-inch plywood and edge them with solid stock. The back and bottom are also plywood.
- Join the case to the side assemblies. Use glue and biscuits as specified in the plan, keeping the assembly aligned and square.
- Add bottle stops if building the wine-rack version. Make and install all 12. Skip this step for the display-stand version.
- Fit the corbels and top. Shape and attach the corbels, then fasten the top with Z-clips.
- Finish and install the shelves. Apply stain and clearcoat, then install shelf pins and shelves. One shelf can rest directly on the bottom.
Finishing: follow the plan’s example or choose your own
WOOD’s example finish uses Varathane wood stain #263 in Gunstock, followed by three coats of General Finishes Enduro-Var water-based satin polyurethane. That is the finish used in the plan’s description, not a requirement for the project. If choosing another finish, test it on scrap oak and follow the product maker’s preparation and application directions.
