Choose grease for the materials, load, and equipment specification—not just the word on the tub. Silicone grease is often a starting point for seals, O-rings, and many rubber or plastic pairings when the exact formulation is compatible. Lithium grease is a broad family used in many automotive and industrial applications, including bearings and chassis points, but the equipment maker’s specification and the product grade still govern.
The labels are not always opposites: a grease can use silicone oil as its base and lithium soap as its thickener. Check the exact product data sheet and the equipment instructions before applying either type.
What is the difference between silicone and lithium grease?
“Silicone” and “lithium” describe different aspects of a grease. Silicone commonly identifies its base lubricant; lithium identifies a thickener, though product names and formulations vary. DuPont, for example, describes MOLYKOTE 822M as silicone oil thickened with lithium soap. So a product may be both silicone-based and lithium-thickened.
Compare the complete formulation—base oil, thickener, additives, grade, and stated applications—instead of treating the labels as mutually exclusive categories.
#1 Best Overall
- Food grade silicone grease, odorless and colorless,no chemical contamination to drinking water.Retains its consistency in temperatures from -40° to 400° f,no pigment for clean use
- Multi-purpose Grease:Silicone sealant can be used to waterproof lubricant on faucets, valve stems, cartridges scuba gear, bearings gaskets and is safe for nitrite rubber o-rings lubricate door hinges, threads on shower heads & bolts, toilet gaskets and flashlight o rings
- Silicone grease resistance:the plumbers grease is water resistant and oxidation resistant.Silicone faucet grease helps reduce friction and provides long-lasting lubrication
- Faucets Grease:Contains high raw silicone content making it better for long term lubricant hold, helps hard-turning faucets work smoothly
- Plumbers valve grease:ideal for lubricating faucet stems, valves and cartridges when repairing a leaky faucet
When is silicone grease the better starting point?
Silicone grease is commonly considered for seals, O-rings, and certain rubber or plastic parts, especially during assembly. WEICON lists plastic and rubber parts, seals, valves, fittings, gaskets, and O-ring assembly among the uses for its Silicone Grease. Those are claims for that product, not a compatibility guarantee for every silicone grease or every elastomer and plastic.
Check the actual material
Identify the seal or component material and check the specific grease’s compatibility information. FUCHS states that “Silicone lubricants are not compatible with silicone substrates.” Do not assume a silicone lubricant is appropriate for a part made of silicone rubber.

- Versatile Use: Super Lube Multi-Purpose Synthetic Grease with Syncolon is perfect as a tool grease, automotive grease, gear grease, and bearing grease for workshop or home use
- High Temperature Grease: This synthetic multipurpose lubricant resists water, salt water, dirt, and corrosion, making it ideal harsh environments
- Safe for Food & Sensitive Applications: As an NSF H1 registered food-grade lubricant, Super Lube is perfect for food processing equipment and is Kosher certified
- Maintains Stability Under Pressure: With a non-melting grease formula, Super Lube stays put without running, dripping, separating, or forming gummy deposits
- Premium Synthetic Lubricants: Super Lube manufactures specialized, effective, and regulatory-compliant lubrication solutions for industrial and mechanical settings
For its named Silicone Grease, WEICON publishes an operating temperature range of −50 °C to +200 °C. That figure applies to that product; it is not a range for silicone greases as a category.
When is lithium grease the better starting point?
Lithium grease is a broad family, not one universal recipe. Mobil describes Mobilgrease MP as lithium hydroxystearate grease based on mineral oil, while RONEX MP is described as lithium-complex grease based on mineral oil. Their application lists and specifications differ, so one lithium grease should not be substituted for another—or for a machine-specific recommendation—based on the thickener name alone.

- PLUMBERS FAUCET AND VALVE GREASE Ideal for lubricating faucet stems valves and cartridges when repairing a leaky faucet
- LUBRICANT GREASE Contains high raw silicone content making it better for long term lubricant hold & helps hard-turning faucets work smoothly
- NSF 61 APPROVED designed for use as a waterproof lubricant on faucets valve stems cartridges and is safe for nitrite/rubber O-rings
- SAFE No chemical contamination to drinking water Retains its consistency in temperatures from -40° to 400° F
- ODORLESS and COLORLESS Odorless scent makes this product easy to work with during application and no pigment for clean use
For example, Mobil lists automotive chassis components, wheel bearings, clutch bearings, universal joints, and ball joints for Mobilgrease MP, subject to its stated use recommendations. RONEX MP lists industrial bearings and gears as well as automotive uses. These examples do not establish that every lithium grease suits those components.
Which grease should you use for bearings or metal-on-metal contact?
Start with the bearing or equipment manufacturer’s specified grease and grade. Do not choose silicone grease simply because it is convenient or compatible with a nearby seal. FUCHS cautions that silicone lubricants can be used in plastic-to-metal applications but “do not possess adequate film strength to prevent wear for metal-on-metal applications”; it recommends silicone greases for light-to-moderate loading.

For a bearing or other loaded metal contact, confirm the product’s intended application and load suitability in its technical data. A product being lithium-based does not, by itself, prove it is suitable for a particular bearing or operating condition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between two specific products
- Read the equipment instructions. Find the specified grease type, grade, application, or product approval. Treat that requirement as the starting point.
- Identify every material in contact. Note the elastomers, plastics, and metals, then verify compatibility for the exact formulation. In particular, FUCHS warns against silicone lubricants on silicone substrates.
- Match the load and motion. Distinguish light or moderate service from heavily loaded metal-on-metal contact. Check the manufacturer’s stated application and wear guidance.
- Compare the full formulation and grade. Check base oil, thickener, additives, and product-specific recommendations. “Lithium” and “silicone” alone are not enough to establish interchangeability.
- Check operating conditions and current data. Compare the exact products’ stated temperature limits and other requirements against the equipment’s conditions. Confirm the current technical data sheet for the product and region.
How much do published temperature ranges tell you?
Manufacturer product pages publish different ranges for specific greases. These figures are product specifications, not comparative test results and not category-wide limits.
| Product | Published temperature range | What the figure applies to |
|---|---|---|
| WEICON Silicone Grease | −50 °C to +200 °C | That named product, according to WEICON’s product page, accessed 2026. |
| DuPont MOLYKOTE 822M | −40 °C to 200 °C | That named product, according to DuPont’s product page, accessed 2026. |
| DuPont MOLYKOTE G-5025 | −40 °C to 180 °C | That named product, according to DuPont’s product page, accessed 2026. |
Do not use the highest number in this table to declare one grease type the winner. The relevant range is the one for the exact approved product under the equipment’s operating conditions.
Quick Recap
What not to assume
- Not every rubber or plastic is compatible. Suitability depends on the exact material and grease formulation.
- Silicone-based does not mean food-safe or drinking-water-approved. Check current certification for the specific product and application.
- A product’s approvals do not transfer to another grease. WEICON reports approvals for its own named product; that does not establish approvals for other silicone or lithium greases.
- A category label does not establish machine suitability. Follow the equipment maker’s recommendation and the grease manufacturer’s current data.
