Two relevant options are the King Arthur Baking Bowl Scraper and the Matfer plastic bowl scraper, but the evidence for each is different: King Arthur describes its own product and recommends it for sticky starter and dough, while a 2013 Bon Appétit article records editor Alison Roman’s favorable personal experience with Matfer. Neither is a current comparative test. Here’s what those sources support—and what to look for when choosing a flexible bowl scraper.
What a bowl scraper is—and what it is not
A bowl scraper is a small, hand-held tool with a flexible edge designed to follow a bowl’s curve and collect batter, dough, or starter clinging to its sides. It can help return that mixture to the batch, but it is not the same tool as a rigid metal bench scraper or bench knife, which is better suited to cutting and moving dough on a work surface.
Some bowl scrapers can also scrape a counter, but that overlap does not make the tools interchangeable. If your main job is dividing dough or clearing a workbench, consider a rigid bench knife or sturdier dough scraper instead. King Arthur’s guide recommends its bowl scraper for sticky starter and dough; its separate article on dough scrapers discusses a related, not identical, tool. King Arthur’s guide to dough scrapers includes a pastry chef’s account of using one for tasks such as shaping dough and frosting a cake.
Two relevant candidates, with different kinds of evidence

These sources make both products reasonable candidates to investigate, not verified current winners. The Matfer account dates to 2013; the King Arthur product and sourdough pages were accessed on October 4, 2026, but product specifications and retail details can change.
Why flexibility and stiffness both matter
A scraper has to bend enough to stay in contact with a curved bowl, but it also needs enough stiffness to move heavier dough. Too much stiffness can make it harder to sweep thin batter trails from a curved surface; too much flexibility can make it less effective against a substantial mass of dough.
King Arthur describes that balance for its own scraper, so treat the description as the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent finding. A historical Cook’s Illustrated equipment test offers a separate illustration of the tradeoff: a reproduced report says five models were tested and names the iSi Basics Silicone Scraper Spatula as the favorite for its combination of rigidity and surface area. It also says the stiffer Ateco Bowl Scraper moved larger quantities of dough but was less effective at sweeping batter trails than the selected iSi. That is a 2009-era result reproduced in a third-party PDF, not a current ranking or verification of present product identity and availability. How to choose one for your bowl and your baking
- Match the edge to the job. For clearing batter, dough, or starter from a bowl, look for an edge that can flex against the curve. For cutting dough or scraping a counter, a rigid bench knife or sturdier scraper may be a better fit.
- Consider the dough you handle. A scraper that bends easily may suit loose mixtures; heavier dough calls for enough stiffness to push or lift it without the tool folding away. There is no supplied current comparative data to identify one ideal stiffness across tasks.
- Check size against your bowl. The working edge should reach around the bowl without being awkward to hold. The cited product descriptions do not establish a universal best size, so consider your usual bowl and grip.
- Think about cleaning and hand feel. Compare the scraper’s shape, grip, material, and ease of washing in the product details before buying; the cited sources do not provide a current, standardized cleaning comparison.
- Decide whether counter scraping is important. King Arthur says its bowl scraper can scrape dried-on dough from a countertop without scratching it. That is a manufacturer statement, not an independent surface-safety test. For regular bench work, choose a tool designed for that task.
When scraping the bowl helps
Scraping the sides and bottom can bring clinging mixture back into a batch and help distribute add-ins. King Arthur’s examples discuss cookie dough and cake, where mixture can cling to the bowl. King Arthur’s explanation of bowl scraping. The benefit depends on the recipe and mixing stage; scraping is not a guarantee that every mixture will become uniform.

The available sources support practical guidance about the tradeoff between flexibility and stiffness, plus two products with relevant but non-comparable endorsements. They do not establish a present-day test of exactly two bowl scrapers. The older five-model comparison is useful for understanding design tradeoffs, but its age and third-party reproduction limit what it can say about products on sale now.

For that reason, neither candidate can responsibly be labeled a tested winner on this evidence. Choose based on your bowl, the mixtures you make, and whether you also need a tool for counter work—and check current product details before ordering.
