Epsom salt supplies magnesium and sulfur, but it is not a complete fertilizer, and routine applications are not established as a way to grow larger bulbs or increase garlic yield.
What Epsom salt can—and cannot—do for garlic
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), a source of magnesium and sulfur. Magnesium is part of chlorophyll and supports photosynthesis; sulfur is an essential plant nutrient and occurs in compounds associated with garlic’s characteristic qualities. Those nutrient roles do not mean that a healthy garlic bed benefits from extra applications.
North Carolina State Extension lists Epsom salt as a possible source of magnesium and sulfur. It is not a complete fertilizer and does not supply the full range of nutrients garlic may need.
Does Epsom salt make garlic bulbs bigger?
There is no support in the reviewed extension guidance for promising that routine Epsom salt use enlarges garlic bulbs or raises yields. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension’s Garlic Production for the Gardener says, “Adding sulfur does not appear to increase yield, but there is active interest in determining how sulfur fertilizers may affect garlic flavor and medicinal compounds.” That statement does not establish that Epsom salt improves flavor or medicinal compounds, either.

UF/IFAS Extension also says Epsom salt does not increase plant growth better than other available forms of magnesium. Its value is as a possible nutrient source when the soil actually needs magnesium—not as a general garlic growth treatment.
Test the soil before choosing an amendment
UGA Cooperative Extension advises garlic growers to follow soil-test recommendations. A soil test helps distinguish a magnesium shortage from a bed that does not need more magnesium, or one where correcting soil pH is the priority. Local laboratories and extension services may use different interpretations, so use the recommendations for your area rather than applying another region’s thresholds or rates.

As a geographically limited example, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach lists general soil interpretation values of at least 35 ppm magnesium and 15 ppm sulfur. These are Iowa reference values, not universal garlic-specific targets. Iowa State notes that calcium, magnesium, and sulfur are rarely deficient in Iowa soils except in sandy, acidic, or low-organic soils, and advises gardeners to follow the soil report.
Choose the amendment that matches the test result
| Soil-test finding | Possible response | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Magnesium is low and soil needs lime | Dolomitic lime may address both needs. | UGA’s garlic guidance says calcium and magnesium may be low in acidic soils and that their need is usually met with dolomitic lime according to the lime recommendation. |
| Magnesium is low, but lime is not required | Epsom salt may be an option. | UMass Extension says Epsom salts may be recommended when magnesium is low and lime is not required. Follow the local soil report. |
| Sulfur is needed, but magnesium is not deficient | Do not add Epsom salt just to supply sulfur; follow local guidance for another sulfur source. | Washington State University Extension advises against Epsom salt unless magnesium is deficient and identifies ammonium sulfate as an option when sulfur is needed. Sulfur sources can affect soil pH and nutrient balance. |
| Neither nutrient is identified as deficient | Do not apply Epsom salt as a routine garlic treatment. | Maryland Extension advises against applying it unless a soil-test report recommends it. |
Why unnecessary applications can cause problems
- Nutrient imbalance: Maryland Extension warns that excess magnesium can make calcium less available to plants.
- Leaching: UF/IFAS notes that Epsom salt is very soluble and may move past the root zone, particularly in sandy soil.
- Wrong remedy: If the soil needs pH adjustment, adding Epsom salt is not a substitute for the lime recommendation. If magnesium is already adequate, more does not address a demonstrated deficiency.
Rates, timing, and planting holes
The extension sources cited here do not establish a garlic-specific Epsom salt rate. Do not rely on a universal tablespoon-per-gallon, per-plant, or per-bed recipe. If a soil test and local recommendation support use, follow the report and product directions for the relevant application. Washington State University Extension’s home-garden guidance says not to put fertilizer, including Epsom salt, into planting holes unless a local recommendation explicitly directs otherwise.

A practical decision
- Get a soil test from a laboratory or service that provides recommendations for your region.
- Check whether the report identifies low magnesium, a need for lime, or a sulfur deficiency.
- Use the amendment and rate recommended for that result. Consider Epsom salt only when magnesium is needed and lime is not.
- If the test does not call for magnesium, skip Epsom salt rather than applying it to garlic by habit.
