Used coffee grounds are not a reliable way to acidify soil around azaleas. These shrubs prefer acidic, well-drained soil, but spent grounds may not lower pH and can sometimes raise it. Test the soil before changing its chemistry; if you reuse grounds, compost them in moderation or apply only a thin layer beneath coarse mulch.
Why coffee grounds are not a dependable azalea soil acidifier
Azaleas prefer soil with a pH of 4.5–6.0, according to the Azalea Society of America. Used coffee grounds do not reliably move soil pH into that range. Penn State Extension says spent grounds will not acidify soil around azaleas and may raise pH above the preferred range. Oregon State University Extension likewise says brewed grounds are close to neutral, around pH 6.5–6.8, and will not lower soil pH enough to benefit acid-loving plants.
Grounds do not have one fixed pH. A 2024 University of Arizona Cooperative Extension synthesis reports that decomposing grounds in the experiments it reviewed ranged from pH 4.6 to 8.4, and that pH changes over time. That experimental range describes the studies cited, not every batch of grounds. The practical point is that used grounds are not a predictable way to lower the pH of azalea soil.
Test the soil before trying to change its pH
If an azalea is struggling or you suspect its soil is not acidic enough, get a soil test through your county Extension service or a laboratory. The result can show whether pH adjustment is needed; changing soil chemistry without a test risks addressing the wrong problem.

If the test shows that pH needs adjustment, follow the laboratory’s findings and region-specific Extension guidance. Sulfur may be recommended in some situations, but the appropriate amount and timing depend on the soil and local conditions. There is no sound generic dose to apply around every azalea.
Check drainage and watering, too
Poor growth is not automatically a pH problem. Azaleas need well-drained soil and are sensitive to both oversaturation and drought. Check whether water drains away from the root zone and whether the plant is receiving appropriate moisture before adding amendments. The Ask Extension service also recommends considering watering and drainage when diagnosing azalea problems.

If you want to reuse coffee grounds
Compost them in moderation
The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension recommends keeping coffee grounds to no more than 20% of total compost volume; higher proportions have often been detrimental. Composting is different from sprinkling grounds directly on the soil: it incorporates them into a broader mix rather than making a concentrated layer around the shrub.
Avoid a thick layer around the plant
Fine grounds can compact and interfere with air and water movement. If you use them as mulch, the Arizona Extension synthesis suggests a layer no thicker than 0.5 inch, covered with about 4 inches of coarse organic mulch. This is a way to use grounds as part of a mulch layer, not a method for lowering soil pH.
