Should You Drip Faucets During the Day or Only at Night?

When freezing weather threatens exposed plumbing, a small cold-water drip may help day and night. Temperature and pipe exposure—not the clock—determine when it matters.

If freezing conditions threaten vulnerable plumbing, drip during both the day and night. The risk depends on the temperature, how long the cold lasts, and where pipes are located—not on the time of day. Use a small, steady cold-water drip from a faucet serving vulnerable plumbing, and follow local utility instructions.

When should you let a faucet drip?

Let it drip whenever freezing weather puts pipes at risk, including daytime hours if temperatures remain low. Philadelphia Water Department recommends taking precautions when temperatures fall below 32°F, particularly if the cold lasts two days or more or pipes have frozen in the past (Philadelphia Water Department).

There is no universal rule that every faucet must drip. Iowa State University Extension says even a trickle through exposed plumbing helps prevent freezing, while local guidance varies with conditions and water-conservation needs (Iowa State University Extension).

Which faucet and how much water?

Focus on plumbing most exposed to cold: pipes along exterior walls or in attics, crawl spaces, garages, and unheated basements. Oklahoma City advises that generally only faucets on exterior walls need to drip; Seattle Public Utilities recommends one indoor faucet during severe cold (Oklahoma City; Seattle Public Utilities).

Choose a faucet that serves the vulnerable plumbing. If practical, use the faucet farthest from the service entry or shutoff on the line serving those pipes. Let cold water form a small, steady drip or a stream no wider than a pencil lead. A heavy flow is unnecessary; Mississippi State University Extension describes a slow drip as sufficient (Mississippi State University Extension).

How to reduce the chance of frozen pipes

  1. Locate exposed plumbing. Check exterior walls, attics, crawl spaces, garages, and unheated basements.
  2. Keep indoor heat steady. Iowa State University Extension recommends maintaining heat day and night. Seattle Public Utilities advises keeping the thermostat at least 55°F during severe cold, whether you are home or away (Iowa State University Extension; Seattle Public Utilities).
  3. Protect the pipes themselves. Insulate exposed plumbing; Texas Department of Insurance notes that pipe insulation is available for do-it-yourself installation. Disconnect outdoor hoses (Texas Department of Insurance).
  4. Open sink cabinets where appropriate. This can allow warmer indoor air to reach plumbing inside exterior-wall cabinets.
  5. Keep the drip small and monitor conditions. Mississippi State University Extension recommends continuing until temperatures are consistently above freezing. Its estimate of about 2 cents per night is an example based on rates at the time of its guidance, not a universal cost (Mississippi State University Extension).

When local instructions should take priority

Dripping uses water, so follow your water provider’s instructions during conservation alerts, emergencies, or unusual freezes. Texas Department of Insurance specifically advises following local directions about dripping (Texas Department of Insurance). Cary, North Carolina, advises that after a power outage lasting longer than 24 hours, residents should stop dripping faucets and turn off water at the meter (Town of Cary).
