Should You Deadhead Your Hydrangeas or Leave Them Alone? Here’s How to Tell

Deadheading is optional, but cutting too far can remove next year’s buds on old-wood hydrangeas. Learn how to decide what to snip—and when to leave blooms in place.

Deadheading hydrangeas is optional: leave faded flowerheads for winter interest, or remove them for a tidier look. The important distinction is between snipping off the flowerhead and pruning the stem. On hydrangeas that form next year’s buds on old wood, a cut too far down can remove those buds and reduce next season’s flowers.

First, identify what kind of hydrangea you have

Hydrangeas do not all flower on the same growth. Old wood is stem growth formed before the current spring; some hydrangeas set flower buds on it the previous year. New wood is growth produced during the current season. The University of Maryland Extension explains these distinctions and notes that some remontant, or reblooming, varieties can flower on both old and new wood: Pruning Hydrangeas.

If you cannot identify the plant, keep any cut to the flowerhead only. Do not substantially shorten stems until you know the hydrangea’s bloom group and the appropriate pruning time. The University of New Hampshire Extension’s regional guidance describes which common types flower on old or new wood: Pruning Hydrangeas.

What deadheading does—and does not do

Deadheading means removing a spent flowerhead; it is not the same as cutting back the shrub. The University of Maryland and University of New Hampshire extensions say deadheading is not necessary for plant health. It is mainly a choice about appearance, though on cultivars capable of reblooming it may encourage another flush.

Removing an old flower does not by itself make a traditional old-wood hydrangea produce a new flush. Rebloom depends on cultivar, and a later flush is not guaranteed or necessarily as vigorous as the first. The University of Delaware Cooperative Extension distinguishes traditional bigleaf hydrangeas from reblooming cultivars in its response to a Sussex County gardener’s question, answered August 18, 2020: Ask Extension response.

Choose the right approach for your hydrangea

Hydrangea group What deadheading means Practical approach
Traditional bigleaf, including mophead and lacecap (Hydrangea macrophylla) Usually a tidier appearance; removing the head does not trigger rebloom in old-wood-only cultivars. Snip off only the faded head, taking care not to remove healthy stem or nearby buds. In mild areas, the Royal Horticultural Society recommends leaving mophead heads over winter for some frost protection and removing them in early spring: Hydrangea pruning.
Reblooming bigleaf or mountain hydrangeas May support additional flowers because these cultivars can flower on old and new wood. Remove the spent head conservatively. Whether another flush follows depends on the cultivar; it is not assured.
Smooth (H. arborescens) and panicle (H. paniculata) These flower on new wood, so deadheading is optional and distinct from structural pruning. Remove a spent flowerhead if you prefer. For substantial pruning, the general timing is late winter or early spring; follow species-specific guidance.
Oakleaf (H. quercifolia) and other old-wood types Removing the head is optional; cutting stems can affect flowering. Keep cuts conservative and use guidance for the identified type before structural pruning.

These are broad groups, not a substitute for identifying a cultivar or accounting for local winter conditions. The RHS advice about leaving mophead heads is specifically for mild areas, not a universal winter rule. Its guidance also distinguishes lacecaps from mopheads.

How to remove a faded flowerhead without cutting too far

  1. Find the faded flowerhead. Decide whether you want to remove it now or leave it for appearance or winter interest.
  2. Locate the shortest safe cut. For an old-wood bigleaf hydrangea, make a small cut just below the flowerhead only if it does not remove healthy stem or nearby buds. Delaware Extension cautions against cutting down to the next set of leaves because next year’s buds can be close to leaf nodes.
  3. Stop at the flowerhead. Do not treat deadheading as a cue to shorten or reshape the shrub. If the plant needs structural pruning, first identify its type and use that type’s pruning schedule.

For panicle hydrangeas, the University of New Hampshire Extension describes removing spent flowers and, for structural work, placing cuts above live buds or at the branch collar. That pruning guidance is not an instruction to cut back every hydrangea in the same way.

Should you cut hydrangea blooms off before winter?

There is no single winter rule for every hydrangea and climate. The RHS advises leaving mophead flowerheads over winter in mild areas for some frost protection, then removing them in early spring. If you are unsure of the hydrangea type or your local conditions make that advice a poor fit, leaving the heads is a low-intervention choice; remove them later with a conservative cut.

When to use pruners

For a small deadheading cut, bypass hand pruners can make a controlled cut. Clean, sharp pruning shears are useful if you choose to remove flowerheads, but no special tool or deadheading is required for the plant’s health. Avoid using the task as an excuse to remove more stem than necessary.
