Should You Add Epsom Salt to Blueberry Bushes? Test First

Epsom salt supplies magnesium, but blueberries need it only when deficient. Test soil or leaves first, check pH, and follow local application guidance.

Epsom salt can help a blueberry bush only when it needs magnesium. It is magnesium sulfate, not a general-purpose blueberry fertilizer, and adding it without a test may fail to address the real problem. Check soil or leaf-test results and follow local recommendations before applying it.

What Epsom salt does for blueberry bushes

Epsom salt supplies magnesium. Blueberries need this nutrient, and a confirmed deficiency can be corrected with a magnesium source. But routine use is not supported as a treatment for every bush: more is not necessarily better, and the right response depends on what is limiting the plant.

Soil conditions matter, too. Blueberries prefer acidic soil; the University of Minnesota Extension gives a target pH range of 4.5–5.5 in its 2026 response, “Which blueberry deficiency?” Adding magnesium sulfate does not correct soil pH that is unsuitable for blueberries.

How to tell whether your bush needs magnesium

Do not diagnose a magnesium deficiency from leaf color alone. University of Georgia guidance describes pink leaf edges and yellowing between veins on mature leaves as a possible magnesium-deficiency pattern, particularly on young rabbiteye blueberries. The University of Florida also notes that magnesium symptoms can appear first on older leaves. But red or yellow foliage can have other causes: Minnesota Extension explains that high pH can interfere with nutrient uptake and produce red pigmentation associated with iron chlorosis; cool weather and other conditions can also affect uptake.

A soil test is the best starting point for checking magnesium and pH. Penn State Extension recommends testing before deciding what to add in “Keys to Establishing a Successful Blueberry Planting.” Leaf analysis may also help assess nutrient status and fertilizer needs, as Ontario guidance explains. Follow the lab’s or local extension service’s recommendations rather than treating visible symptoms as proof.

Choose an application only after testing

When a test confirms a magnesium need, the recommendation may be for soil application or a foliar spray. Neither method has one universal backyard rate; rates differ among regional guides, production systems, soil conditions, and application methods. Use the method and rate recommended for your test result and location, and follow product-label directions.

Soil application

Soil-applied Epsom salt delivers magnesium to the root zone. For example, the University of Georgia’s 2015 backyard guidance gives 3 ounces per plant when a soil test shows low magnesium. The University of Connecticut’s 2025 guidance instead recommends 10 ounces per 100 square feet when soil-test magnesium is below optimum and limestone is not recommended. These are distinct regional recommendations, not interchangeable rates.

Production-scale recommendations differ again. Ontario’s 2022 fruit-production guidance specifies a soil application supplying 80 kg of magnesium per hectare where deficiency is confirmed. That figure is for the production context described by the guide, not a home-garden rate.

Foliar spray

A foliar spray applies magnesium sulfate solution to leaves. Ontario’s 2022 guide describes a solution containing 1.9 kg of magnesium per 1,000 L of water, equivalent there to 20 kg of magnesium sulfate, with a minimum spray volume of 2,000 L per hectare. British Columbia’s 2026 production guide describes a corrective foliar spray of 1 kg of magnesium sulfate in 100 L of water and advises spraying under cool, slow-drying conditions. These figures are for the production contexts in those guides; do not scale or combine them into a home-garden recipe.

Do not confuse magnesium with soil pH correction

Magnesium sulfate and dolomitic lime are not interchangeable. Lime changes soil conditions as well as supplying magnesium, so whether it is suitable depends on root-zone pH. University of Florida guidance treats magnesium sulfate or hydrated dolomitic lime as options subject to pH; the University of Arkansas production guide lists magnesium sulfate or potassium-magnesium sulfate when magnesium is needed and pH is above 4.5. Use a test-based local recommendation to choose a source, especially because raising pH can make blueberry growing conditions less suitable.

What to do before applying Epsom salt

  1. Get a soil test that reports pH and magnesium; ask whether leaf analysis would help if the diagnosis remains unclear.
  2. Compare the result with blueberry recommendations from your local extension service or agricultural authority.
  3. If the recommendation calls for magnesium, use the specified source, application method, and rate for your growing conditions. Do not borrow a rate from a different region or production system.
  4. Reassess according to the testing service’s guidance rather than repeating applications by habit or appearance.

Other nutrient interactions can contribute to the problem. Penn State discusses how nutrient interactions affect magnesium availability, and British Columbia’s guide notes that excess potassium can interfere with uptake of other nutrients and bases potassium applications on leaf analysis. Avoid adding other fertilizers as a guess; use the test results to guide the whole nutrient plan.
