Fresh grounds are not a reliable fertilizer or soil acidifier, and thick layers can compact and interfere with air and water movement.
Why composted coffee grounds can help
Spent grounds are useful compost feedstock. Once incorporated into a varied, finished compost, they can contribute organic matter and nutrients to soil. They are one ingredient in an amendment, not a complete fertilizer; Maine Extension notes that grounds contain plant nutrients and micronutrients in very small quantities. See Maine Cooperative Extension’s guidance on using grounds to fertilize plants and Iowa State Extension’s home-composting guidance.
Whether a flower bed needs added nutrients or organic matter depends on its soil. A soil test can help you decide whether finished compost is appropriate rather than adding grounds simply because they are available.
How to use grounds in a flower bed
Compost them before applying
- Let spent grounds cool before adding them to a compost pile.
- Mix them with varied compost materials rather than making a pile of grounds alone. Washington State University Extension recommends that grounds make up no more than 20% of a compost pile by volume; follow that source-specific limit when using its guidance.
- Wait until the compost is finished, then use it as an amendment where your soil test or garden conditions indicate a need.
WSU Extension advises against putting coffee grounds in vermicomposting bins. For additional background on home composting, consult Iowa State Extension.

- More naturally available phosphorus; stable consistent plant growth, no growth spikes; 100-percent natural and organic
- Eight select strains of ecto and endo mycorrhizae contribute to drought tolerance, enhanced nutrient availability and increased plant performance
If applying them directly as a landscape mulch
WSU Extension describes a narrower option: after soil testing, apply only a thin layer of composted grounds where nutrients are low, and cover it with coarse organic mulch. Do not spread grounds thickly on their own. Their fine texture can compact, limiting the movement of air and water through the bed. WSU’s guidance does not establish a publication year here, so no layer-depth figure is given.
Why fresh grounds are a risk for flowers
Fresh grounds can be phytotoxic to some plants, according to WSU Extension. Avoid placing them where seeds are being started or where new plants need to establish. Composting first is the more cautious approach because it avoids relying on fresh grounds around vulnerable plants.

Do coffee grounds make soil more acidic?
Not reliably. WSU Extension reports that research on decomposing grounds has found pH ranging from mildly acidic to somewhat alkaline, and that pH changes over time. Any effect is localized around the grounds rather than a predictable change throughout the soil profile. Use a soil test to understand your bed’s pH; grounds are not a substitute for a purpose-made pH amendment.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Produce abundant and vibrant fruit and blooms! This product works by strengthening your plant's roots to increase nutrient uptake… enabling it to bloom and produce like you've never seen!
- Use on all flower / fruit / vegetable producing plants (we've seen amazing results with citrus trees, avocados, raspberries, cantaloupe, roses, petunias, etc… but this formula will work on a wide range of plants)
- Super, super concentrated - A little goes a LONG way (we recommend you dilute at a rate of 1 teaspoon per 2 gallons of water)
- Easy to use - simply dilute with water and pour or spray on your plants with their regular watering routine… repeat every 2-4 weeks
- Formulated especially for late season (late summer / early fall) application… this is exactly what your plants need in the later stages of the growth cycle

What coffee grounds will not reliably do
- Fertilize every flower bed: Their nutrient contribution is limited, and whether a bed needs nutrients depends on its soil.
- Repel or kill garden pests: WSU Extension says published evidence does not show that grounds repel or kill garden pests.
- Protect plants from disease: WSU describes disease-suppression evidence as limited to controlled conditions on a small number of crops, with effectiveness in gardens and landscapes unknown.
- Suppress weeds or deter cats: The available WSU guidance does not establish these as dependable benefits.
