The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link is a roughly 24-kilometre highway crossing of China’s Pearl River Estuary, joining Shenzhen and Zhongshan. It opened to traffic on June 30, 2024, and combines two bridges, two artificial islands and an underwater tunnel. Government and city publications report that the project set 10 world records across bridge design, tunnel construction and an underwater interchange; those are reported project records, not a claim that an independent record body adjudicated every category.
What is the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link?
The link forms part of the Greater Bay Area highway network. Luohu Government Online, in a 2024 article attributed to CGTN, describes the route as about 24 kilometres long and reports that it cuts the Shenzhen–Zhongshan journey from around two hours to approximately 30 minutes. That is a source-reported comparison, not a guaranteed travel time: the actual trip depends on the route and conditions. The 24-kilometre figure refers to the whole link, not just its tunnel. What are the 10 reported world records?
A June 2024 list from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area portal groups five records under the bridges and five under the tunnel and underwater interchange. Bridge records
- Main span: 1,666 metres, reported as the longest main span for a fully offshore steel box-girder suspension bridge.
- Bridge deck height: 91 metres, reported as the highest bridge deck and navigation clearance for a sea bridge.
- Anchor size: Approximately 344,000 cubic metres of concrete in a single offshore suspension-bridge anchor, reported as the largest of its type.
- Wind-resistance test: 83.7 metres per second in the suspension bridge’s flutter test, reported as the highest test speed for a suspension bridge.
- Deck paving area: 378,800 square metres of steel-bridge-deck hot-mix epoxy asphalt paving, reported as the largest area of this type.
Tunnel and underwater-interchange records
- Immersed-tube tunnel length and lanes: 5,035 metres for a two-way, eight-lane tunnel, reported as the longest of its type. It consists of 32 tube sections and a final joint.
- Tunnel width: The steel-shell-concrete immersed-tube tunnel has a standard width of 46 metres and a maximum width of 55.6 metres, reported as the widest underwater tunnel of its type. The report also gives a standard section length of 165 metres and a height of 10.6 metres.
- Single-section concrete placement: Up to 29,000 cubic metres of self-compacting concrete in one steel-shell immersed-tube section, reported as the largest single cast of its type. Total tunnel concrete is reported as 910,000 cubic metres.
- Underwater interchange: The source calls it the first underwater expressway interchange and describes it as an airport interchange.
- Final-joint waterstop: A 3-metre-wide, repeatedly foldable M-shaped waterstop, reported as the widest of its type used at an immersed-tunnel final joint.
The Greater Bay Area portal published these figures in 2024. Eyeshenzhen also published a ten-item list and describes the tunnel as the longest and widest undersea steel-shell immersed tunnel. These sources report the project’s records; they do not provide a systematic comparison against every competing structure or document adjudication by an independent international record-certification body. How long is the tunnel, and how is it built?
The immersed-tube tunnel section is 5,035 metres long—not 24 kilometres, which is the approximate length of the full crossing. It uses 32 prefabricated tube sections and a final joint. The tunnel carries eight lanes of two-way traffic and passes beneath the estuary between the link’s bridges and artificial islands.
The tunnel’s width figures describe different dimensions: 46 metres is the standard tube width, while 55.6 metres is the maximum. The same 2024 government report gives 165 metres as the standard section length and 10.6 metres as its height. These construction dimensions are distinct from the overall route length and the bridge’s 1,666-metre main span.

What does “world record” mean here?
The ten labels come from project and government reporting published in 2024. They identify specific engineering measures—such as a bridge’s main span, a wind-test speed or a single concrete pour—rather than an independently verified ranking across all global infrastructure. For comparisons with other crossings, match the definitions: overall route length is not tunnel length, bridge span is not total bridge length, and deck height should not be confused with navigational clearance.
Eyeshenzhen attributes a further claim about construction precision to Ning Jinjin, vice chief engineer of the project: “The advanced remote control technology we utilized to achieve this docking set a new world record for millimeter-precision underwater alignment.” The article was updated June 28, 2024; it does not give a more precise date for the underlying statement.
