RTINGS’ independent review reports decent bare-floor cleaning and quiet operation, while flagging pet-hair pickup on low-pile carpet, brushroll tangles, and app shortcomings. Shark advertises up to 30 days of debris storage; that is a capacity estimate, not a guaranteed emptying schedule.
What the AV2501S is—and which version this review covers
The AV2501S is Shark’s standard-base version of its AI Ultra Robot Self-Empty. Shark says its 360-degree LiDAR maps the home and describes Matrix Clean as making multiple passes in a grid pattern. It also advertises object detection and avoidance. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not proof that the robot will reliably avoid every obstacle in every home. Shark’s AV2501S product page.

It vacuums but does not mop. RTINGS identifies the AV2501S as the entry-level model it tested and distinguishes it from similarly named models with larger advertised-capacity bases:

How it performs on floors and pet hair
RTINGS reports that the AV2501S does reasonably well on bare floors and operates quietly. Its review also identifies fine-particle sealing as a strength. These are RTINGS’ findings, not results from hands-on testing for this article.
Carpet and pet hair
RTINGS says the robot can struggle to remove pet hair from low-pile carpet. Long hair can wrap around the brushroll, despite Shark’s “self-cleaning” description, so owners should expect to inspect and clear it as needed. If low-pile carpet covered in pet hair is your main cleaning challenge, this is a meaningful drawback.

What to expect from the base and filtration
Shark describes the base as bagless and says it holds up to 30 days of dirt and debris. The company also claims its true HEPA filtration captures and traps 99.97% of dust and allergens down to 0.3 microns. That percentage is Shark’s product claim; RTINGS says it does not test particle filtration for self-empty docks, so its review does not independently verify the claim.
RTINGS notes that the robot’s internal dustbin is small and the bagless dock is smaller than many self-empty stations. How often the base needs attention will depend on debris and cleaning frequency; the advertised 30 days should not be treated as a guaranteed interval for every household. Bagless disposal also means emptying the bin yourself rather than replacing a dock bag.

App, mapping, and everyday controls
RTINGS reports that the SharkClean app offers schedules, battery status, cleaning modes, cleaning history, and no-go zones. It also notes that the app can be slow or buggy and may show incorrect status. The robot requires a constant 2.4 GHz network connection.
There are practical limits to the mapping features: RTINGS says scheduled cleaning is not necessarily room-specific, the app does not show the robot’s position in real time, and it does not support multi-floor maps. Those omissions matter if you expect to direct cleaning room by room or keep separate maps for multiple floors.

Maintenance and parts to check
Ownership involves more than emptying the base. RTINGS lists the filters, wheels, side brushes, sensors, and brushroll as parts that need attention; long hair may need to be removed manually from the brushroll. Shark’s product listing surfaces replacement components including the XPRFRV2500 pre-motor filter, 1156FK950 front wheel, 142KY2500S base dust bin, and 140KY2500 brushroll door. How it compares with the alternatives RTINGS names
RTINGS compares the AV2501S with the Shark Matrix Robot RV2310AE and yeedi vac station. These are review-source comparisons, not a current ranking of all robot vacuums; the deciding factors are the surfaces in your home, app needs, disposal preferences, and whether you need mopping.
| Option | RTINGS’ comparison | Why it may matter |
|---|---|---|
| Shark AI Ultra AV2501S | Compared with the Matrix, it does better with hair and fine-particle sealing; compared with yeedi, it seals fine allergens better and clears more debris on bare surfaces. | Consider it if bare floors and fine-particle containment matter more than low-pile carpet pet hair pickup or mopping. |
| Shark Matrix Robot RV2310AE | RTINGS describes it as having better low-pile pickup and smoother app integration than the AI Ultra. | Worth comparing if carpet pickup or app experience is a priority. |
| yeedi vac station | RTINGS describes it as having better carpet performance, a larger external dirtbag, and mopping hardware. | Consider it if carpet, a larger dirt container, or mopping is important; RTINGS says the AI Ultra seals fine allergens better and clears more debris on bare surfaces. |
Who should consider the AV2501S?
- A reasonable fit: households seeking a LiDAR-mapping vacuum for mostly bare floors, quiet operation, and a bagless self-empty base.
- Think carefully first: homes where low-pile carpet and pet hair are the main job, or where long hair would make brushroll maintenance burdensome.
- Look elsewhere if: you need mopping, room-specific scheduling, real-time location in the app, or multi-floor maps.
