The right setup depends on your IKEA hardware. If you have the older TRÅDFRI Gateway, add it through Home Assistant’s IKEA TRÅDFRI integration. If you have a DIRIGERA hub, use Matter or HomeKit Device. If you have no IKEA hub, pair the light directly with Home Assistant through ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT using a compatible Zigbee coordinator.
Choose the correct connection method
“TRÅDFRI” usually refers to IKEA’s older Zigbee lighting range, including bulbs, drivers, panels, remotes and dimmers. However, IKEA also sells newer Matter-over-Thread products. Check the exact product and protocol before starting; not every IKEA light follows the same setup process.

For a new Home Assistant installation, direct Zigbee pairing is usually the most flexible option because it avoids an extra IKEA hub. If an existing TRÅDFRI Gateway already works reliably and you only need on/off or dimming, keeping it is the least disruptive choice.

Before you start
- Identify the exact bulb, driver or panel model.
- Determine whether it is connected to a TRÅDFRI Gateway, DIRIGERA, an IKEA remote, another Zigbee controller, or nothing.
- Keep the light powered continuously during setup and normal use.
- For direct Zigbee pairing, connect a compatible coordinator to the Home Assistant host. Options include Home Assistant Connect ZBT-1 and Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2.
- Use the reset and pairing instructions for the exact IKEA model. Avoid assuming that every TRÅDFRI product uses the same reset sequence.
A Zigbee device can belong to only one Zigbee network at a time. A light joined to an IKEA Gateway cannot normally remain joined directly to ZHA. Remove it from the previous controller or factory-reset it before moving it.

Route 1: Add a TRÅDFRI Gateway
Requirements
The older TRÅDFRI Gateway must be powered and connected to your router by Ethernet. Home Assistant and the gateway must be on the same local network. You will also need the gateway’s security key, printed on its underside. The old gateway uses IKEA Home smart 1; the newer IKEA Home smart app is intended for DIRIGERA.
Home Assistant steps
- Open Home Assistant.
- Go to Settings → Devices & services.
- Select Add Integration.
- Search for IKEA TRÅDFRI.
- Follow the configuration flow and enter the gateway security key when requested.
- Open the resulting device and confirm that the light entity has appeared.
Home Assistant may discover the gateway automatically. If it does not, add IKEA TRÅDFRI manually from the integrations page.
The light should appear as a Home Assistant light device and entity. Depending on the model and firmware, controls may include on/off, brightness, color temperature or color. Inspect the entity rather than assuming every TRÅDFRI light supports every feature.

Home Assistant documents that TRÅDFRI remotes, shortcut buttons and motion sensors connected through this integration report battery status but do not provide events for automations. If a remote or sensor must trigger Home Assistant automations, direct ZHA pairing or the HomeKit Device route may be more suitable.
IKEA app groups are not imported because they can cause stability problems. Create groups natively in Home Assistant instead.

Route 2: Connect DIRIGERA
DIRIGERA is not the old TRÅDFRI Gateway, and it is not configured with the dedicated IKEA TRÅDFRI integration. Home Assistant’s documentation identifies two practical routes: Matter and HomeKit Device.
Matter Bridge
IKEA says DIRIGERA can act as a Matter Bridge for supported IKEA products, including older Zigbee-based lights. The bulb remains paired to DIRIGERA; Home Assistant communicates with the hub through Matter.
Set up the light in the IKEA Home smart app first, enable DIRIGERA’s Matter-bridge functionality, then add the bridge through Home Assistant’s Matter integration. The exact controls exposed depend on what DIRIGERA publishes for that product.
HomeKit Device
If DIRIGERA is already exposed to Apple Home, Home Assistant’s HomeKit Device integration is another option. Add the bridge through Home Assistant and select the entities it exposes. Available controls and accessory events depend on DIRIGERA’s HomeKit representation.
DIRIGERA is sensible when you already use IKEA’s newer ecosystem, want to keep the IKEA app, or have a mixture of older and newer IKEA products. It adds a hub and protocol layer, however, so direct ZHA is generally simpler for a Home Assistant-first system with only a few Zigbee lights.

Moving from the old TRÅDFRI Gateway to DIRIGERA may require rebuilding scenes and settings; IKEA does not treat it as a seamless migration.
Route 3: Pair the light directly with ZHA
Requirements and coordinator placement
Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA) is Home Assistant’s built-in Zigbee gateway implementation. You need a compatible Zigbee coordinator connected to the Home Assistant host.
Use a USB extension cable to position the coordinator away from the server, Wi-Fi router, metal equipment and USB 3.0 devices. USB 3.0 interference can affect the 2.4 GHz radio used by Zigbee and Thread.
Pairing steps
- Connect the coordinator to the Home Assistant host.
- Restart Home Assistant if you connected it after Home Assistant started.
- Open Settings → Devices & services.
- Add or open Zigbee Home Automation and complete coordinator setup.
- Start ZHA’s device-joining process.
- Reset the IKEA light using the instructions for its exact model, then keep it near the coordinator while it joins.
- Wait for the device to be discovered.
- Assign it to an area and give it a clear name.
- Test on/off and brightness before installing it in its final location.
A successful pairing creates a light device and entity. The available controls still depend on the model, firmware and ZHA device support. ZHA does not provide a definitive universal compatibility list for every IKEA model.
Zigbee2MQTT alternative
Zigbee2MQTT is an alternative if you already run MQTT or prefer its device-converter ecosystem. Use either ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT for this light; do not attempt to manage the same device through both Zigbee stacks.

Build a reliable Zigbee network
- Keep the bulb powered. Turning a light off in Home Assistant is different from cutting power at the wall. A mains-powered bulb can route Zigbee traffic, but a physically disconnected bulb cannot.
- Pair close to the coordinator. After pairing, move the light to its final position and allow the mesh to settle.
- Avoid radio interference. Separate the coordinator from Wi-Fi routers, USB 3.0 equipment, SSD enclosures and metal cabinets.
- Add powered routers. Permanently powered Zigbee devices can improve coverage.
- Do not routinely switch off router bulbs. ZHA warns that frequently powering off Zigbee router devices weakens the mesh.
- Use physical switches carefully. Smart bulbs need continuous mains power; control them in software or with automations instead of disconnecting them.
Troubleshooting
The bulb is not discovered
- Confirm that the light is actually in pairing mode.
- Reset it if it is still joined to the Gateway, DIRIGERA, Hue or another Zigbee controller.
- Confirm that Home Assistant detects the coordinator.
- Move the bulb close to the coordinator for commissioning.
- Use a USB extension cable and remove nearby interference.
- Check that the bulb has constant power.
- Confirm that you are using the intended Zigbee integration.
- Check whether the exact model is supported by your Zigbee stack.
The bulb was already paired elsewhere
Being controllable by an IKEA remote does not mean the light is available for Home Assistant. It may still belong to the old Zigbee network. Remove it from that network or factory-reset it, start Home Assistant’s joining process, and then perform the model-specific reset near the coordinator.
The bulb becomes unavailable
First restore power and check physical placement. Then inspect Home Assistant diagnostics and logs. Common causes include weak coverage, coordinator interference, an unstable mesh, or a wall switch that has disconnected the bulb. Move the coordinator away from USB 3.0 equipment, add a powered Zigbee router, and re-pair at the final location if necessary.
“Unable to connect” with the Gateway
Restart the gateway, verify its Ethernet connection, and confirm that it and Home Assistant are on the same LAN. Assign the gateway a permanent DHCP lease or static address, then try setup again.
Fatal DTLS error: code 20
Re-enter the gateway security key carefully. Characters such as uppercase “I” and lowercase “l” can be confused.

Home Assistant documents this as a possible post-firmware-update issue. Remove the IKEA TRÅDFRI integration under Settings → Integrations, restart Home Assistant, add the integration again, and re-enter the security key.

The remote does not trigger an automation
This is expected through the official Gateway integration because it does not provide remote, shortcut-button or motion-sensor events. Use ZHA or HomeKit Device if event-based automations are required.
Some light controls are missing
Missing color temperature, color, effects or transition controls do not necessarily indicate a failed pairing. Capabilities vary by light model, firmware and connection path. Compare the entity exposed through the Gateway, DIRIGERA bridge and direct Zigbee route before changing hardware.
Example Home Assistant automation
Once the light appears, you can target its entity in an automation. Replace the example entity ID with the one shown in Settings → Devices & services → Entities.

- Keep the TRÅDFRI Gateway if it already works and basic light control is enough.
- Use DIRIGERA with Matter or HomeKit if your home is invested in IKEA’s current ecosystem and you want to retain the IKEA app.
- Use direct ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT for a new Home Assistant-first system, multiple Zigbee brands, or automations that depend on local accessory events.
You do not need DIRIGERA for direct ZHA pairing, and you do not need a separate Zigbee coordinator when the old TRÅDFRI Gateway is already connected successfully. Choose one network path, reset the light when moving between controllers, and leave the bulb continuously powered after installation.
