To make two or more Amazon Echo speakers play the same music together, create an Alexa Multi-Room Music speaker group. In the Alexa app, go to Devices, tap +, choose Combine Speakers and Multi-Room Music, select the Echos, name the group, and save it. You can then say, “Alexa, play music in Downstairs.”
That setup is for synchronized music. Stereo sound, Fire TV audio, intercom calls, announcements, and grouped smart-home controls use different features.

Choose the right way to connect your Echo speakers
| What you want | Use this feature | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Play the same music in several rooms | Alexa Multi-Room Music | Synchronizes compatible music playback across selected speakers. |
| Improve stereo sound in one room | Stereo Pair | Uses two compatible Echo speakers as left and right channels. |
| Play Fire TV sound through Echos | Fire TV Home Theater | Routes TV audio through supported Fire TV and Echo combinations. |
| Speak to someone in another room | Drop In | Provides two-way communication between supported Alexa devices. |
| Broadcast a spoken message | Announcements | Sends a one-way voice message to household Alexa devices. |
| Control several smart-home products | Alexa smart-home group | Groups devices logically; it does not automatically synchronize their audio. |
Multi-Room Music is not a universal audio mirror. Timers, alarms, many Alexa replies, Bluetooth audio, phone calls, and arbitrary television or app audio do not automatically play in sync on every Echo.
Amazon describes Multi-Room Music as synchronized playback across multiple Echo devices and compatible third-party Alexa devices. The system coordinates playback over the home network rather than simply relaying every sound from one speaker to another. See Amazon’s Multi-Room Music overview and its explanation of the sender and receiver model.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Before you create a speaker group
- Set up every Echo individually in the Alexa app first. Each device should appear under Devices and respond when tested on its own.
- Use the same Amazon account or household environment where possible. Devices registered to different accounts may not be available to the same group.
- Connect every speaker to working Wi-Fi and the internet. Multi-room playback depends on the home network.
- Give devices distinct names, such as “Kitchen Echo,” “Bedroom Echo,” and “Living Room Echo.” Avoid names that sound alike.
- Install pending updates if the Alexa app reports them.
- Check wireless coverage. Amazon recommends restarting the Echo and router for connection problems and suggests keeping an Echo within about 30 feet (10 meters) of the router where practical. Keep speakers away from interference sources such as microwaves and baby monitors. See Amazon’s Echo Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
How to create an Alexa Multi-Room Music group
- Open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet.
- Tap Devices.
- Tap the + button.
- Choose Combine Speakers.
- Select Multi-Room Music.
- Select the Echo speakers you want to include.
- Enter a short, distinctive group name, such as “Downstairs” or “Everywhere.”
- Save the group.
Menu labels can vary by Alexa app version, country, device type, and Amazon’s current interface. If you do not see exactly Combine Speakers or Multi-Room Music, look for the equivalent speaker-group or audio-combination option under Devices.
Amazon’s documented workflow supports a named group containing two or more Echo devices. Once saved, test it with:
“Alexa, play music in Downstairs.”
Music should begin on the selected speakers, with playback coordinated across the group. Eligibility can differ for third-party Alexa speakers; a product with an Alexa microphone is not automatically compatible with every Alexa audio feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsControl the group with voice commands
Use the exact group name in your request:
- “Alexa, play jazz in Downstairs.”
- “Alexa, play my playlist in Everywhere.”
- “Alexa, pause music in Downstairs.”
- “Alexa, resume music in Downstairs.”
- “Alexa, next in Downstairs.”
- “Alexa, set the volume to five in Downstairs.”
There is an important difference between targeted and unqualified commands:

- Group control: “Alexa, play music in Downstairs.” Targets the named Multi-Room Music group.
- Individual control: “Alexa, play music in Kitchen Echo.” Targets one device.
- Unqualified control: “Alexa, pause.” May affect the currently active playback target rather than every Echo in the home.
Several Echos hearing the wake word at once is not evidence that they are grouped. Alexa is designed to select one responding device; synchronized playback is a separate feature.
Edit or delete a speaker group
To maintain the group, open Alexa > Devices, find the relevant multi-room speaker group, and choose Edit. From there, you can add or remove devices or delete the group. Because Amazon changes app organization, the group may appear in a speaker or combined-device section rather than under a permanently fixed menu.
If the group will not save or edit, remove the affected speaker, restart it, and recreate the group. Check that the device still appears online before adding it again.

- Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Not every two Echo models can form a stereo pair. Compatibility is model- and feature-dependent and may change. To check:
- Open Alexa > Devices.
- Tap +.
- Choose Combine Speakers.
- Choose Stereo Pair/Subwoofer, if shown.
- Let the app identify eligible speakers.
- Select the two devices and assign their left and right positions.
Do not use stereo pairing as a replacement for whole-home audio. Amazon treats stereo pairing as a separate capability from multi-room synchronization.
Can Echo speakers play TV audio together?
Not through the normal Multi-Room Music setup. Fire TV audio uses a separate Home Theater configuration with its own compatibility requirements. The particular Fire TV and Echo models determine whether the setup is available, and Amazon does not guarantee that any number of Echos can become surround speakers.

Look in the Alexa app for Devices > + > Combine Speakers > Home Theater, or the equivalent current option. If the app does not offer the desired devices, that combination is not supported through the current setup. Amazon also supports certain certified Alexa-enabled soundbars and AV receivers in Multi-Room Music groups; see its information on compatible soundbars and AVRs.

Use Drop In or Announcements for communication
If your goal is communication rather than music, use the appropriate feature:
- Drop In creates an optional two-way connection between supported Alexa devices, functioning as an in-home intercom. Review contact and household permissions before enabling it. Amazon explains the feature in its Alexa communication guidance.
- Announcements broadcasts a spoken message to household Alexa devices. It is useful for messages such as “Dinner is ready,” but it is not synchronized music.
Music subscriptions and simultaneous playback
A single Multi-Room Music group normally plays one selected stream across the group. That is different from asking several ungrouped Echos to play different songs at the same time.
Independent playback can be limited by the music service, plan, account, and country. For example, Amazon’s Music Unlimited FAQ states that its Family Plan supports simultaneous playback on up to six devices, while its Single Device plan is intended for one Echo or Fire TV device. This does not mean that a group of six speakers represents six independent streams: one song playing across a group is a separate use case. Plan terms and availability can change.

One Echo does not appear when creating the group
- Confirm it appears under Devices in the Alexa app.
- Ask it individually, “Alexa, what time is it?”
- Check its Wi-Fi connection and account registration.
- Close and reopen the Alexa app.
- Restart the Echo.
- If several devices are affected, restart the router.
- Remove and recreate the group.
- Re-register or reset the Echo only as a last resort.
The device may be offline, incompletely configured, registered to another account, affected by stale app data, or ineligible for the selected audio mode.

Music plays on only one speaker
- Say the exact group name: “Alexa, play music in Downstairs.”
- Check that the other Echos are online.
- Test each speaker individually.
- Try a simple supported music request.
- Check whether the selected service supports playback through the group.
- Rename ambiguous groups or recreate the group if necessary.
The speakers are delayed or out of sync
Improve Wi-Fi coverage first. Move a weak-signal Echo closer to the router or access point, remove sources of interference, restart all group members, and restart the router. If the problem continues, remove and recreate the group.
Multi-Room Music is designed to maintain synchronization over standard home Wi-Fi, but an unstable or congested network can still cause dropouts or timing problems. Bluetooth-connected audio should not be assumed to synchronize through Multi-Room Music.
The wrong room responds
Use short, acoustically distinct names and say the complete group name. Avoid pairs such as “Bedroom” and “Bed Room,” and check whether a smart-home room group has the same name as an Echo or speaker group. Rename one of the conflicting devices or groups.
Music stops when someone else starts playback
This commonly indicates a music-service or account limit when people are trying to play different content independently. It is not the same as one song playing across a Multi-Room Music group. Check the service’s current plan rules.
When Echo is not the best multi-room system
Echo speakers are a practical, relatively simple way to add voice control and synchronized background music throughout a home. However, readers seeking a dedicated audio ecosystem, higher fidelity, or more advanced room grouping may prefer a proprietary system.
- Sonos: Purpose-built multi-room hardware and grouping, with Alexa control available through the Sonos skill. Sonos manages its own multi-room synchronization. See Amazon’s information on cloud-controlled speakers.
- HEOS: Denon and Marantz equipment can use HEOS for its own synchronized groups, while Alexa can control supported devices and established HEOS groups after the relevant skill is enabled. See Amazon’s HEOS and compatible AV equipment guidance.
These systems add cost and require using their own audio platform for grouping. They are unnecessary if your priority is simply making existing Echos play compatible music together.
Should you buy another Echo?
Check the problem before spending money:
- Need inexpensive room coverage: An Echo Dot or Echo Pop can be a sensible addition for a bedroom, office, hallway, or kitchen.
- Need stronger sound in one main room: Put more of the budget into a full-size Echo or Echo Studio instead of filling the room with several small speakers.
- Need a screen, recipes, visual timers, or video calling: Consider an Echo Show, while recognizing that its main advantage is the display rather than sound quality.
- Have weak Wi-Fi: Improve coverage first. A mesh system such as eero may help only when network coverage is demonstrably the cause; it is not required for Multi-Room Music.
- Want serious whole-home audio: Compare Sonos or HEOS rather than assuming Echo is the best long-term audio platform.
Model compatibility, app labels, Fire TV support, third-party eligibility, group limits, music-service rules, prices, and availability can change. Use the Alexa app’s compatibility checks and the manufacturers’ current product pages before buying.
