A basic rain barrel system needs a stable, level base, a screened inlet, a usable outlet and an overflow route that carries excess water away from your home. Choose a downspout and location that can accommodate those parts, then test the setup before relying on it. Use collected water for appropriate outdoor, non-potable purposes only.

What a basic rain barrel system needs

The essential components are a barrel, a screened inlet, a spigot or other outlet, and an overflow hose or pipe. EPA Region 3’s August 2009 DIY rain barrel guide describes one way to assemble these parts. Its barrel dimensions and fittings are an example plan, not a universal specification; follow the instructions for the barrel or kit you choose.

Most household rain barrels hold 50–55 gallons, according to University of Minnesota Extension, reviewed in 2024. When comparing options, check capacity, material, footprint, downspout compatibility, cleaning access and whether the package includes a screen, outlet, hose and overflow fittings. A search phrase such as “rain barrel kit with screen and overflow” can help identify complete kits, but verify the included parts and fit before buying. A screen or mosquito cover, overflow fittings and an optional first-flush diverter may also be available separately; roof characteristics affect captured-water quality, and a diverter does not make water potable. See Oregon State University Extension’s guidance on harvesting rainwater for garden use.

Check the site and local requirements

Choose a downspout draining a suitable roof area and a spot with enough room for the barrel, access to its spigot, and a safe route for overflow. The ground or platform must be level and stable. Check local rules before installing the system, especially if the work involves plumbing connections or a larger installation; approaches vary by municipality, as described in the EPA’s Municipal Handbook on Rainwater Harvesting Policies. If you rent or the property is shared, get permission from the owner or responsible manager.

Consider the weight before choosing a raised base. The EPA’s 2022 Semi-Arid Green Infrastructure Toolbox states that a full 55-gallon barrel weighs 450 pounds and warns that an unstable foundation can create a tipping hazard. Elevating the barrel can improve gravity drainage and provide room for a watering can, but only use a support that can safely bear the full load.

Install the rain barrel

  1. Set the base. Place a stable, level support directly beneath the chosen downspout. If you raise the barrel for spigot access, make sure the support cannot shift or tip under the filled weight.
  2. Prepare the screened inlet. Fit a secure screen over the opening where water enters. It should catch leaves and debris and block insect access. Keep it accessible so you can remove debris and clean it.
  3. Fit the outlet. Install the spigot or supplied outlet near the lower part of the barrel, following the barrel or kit manufacturer’s instructions for placement and sealing threaded connections. The drilling and hose-bib method in EPA Region 3’s DIY plan applies to that plan; it should not be assumed to fit every commercial barrel.
  4. Connect the downspout. Redirect or modify the downspout so roof runoff flows into the screened inlet without bypassing the screen. Follow the instructions for any diverter, and check local restrictions before altering the downspout.
  5. Route the overflow. Before using the barrel, connect an overflow hose or pipe and direct it to an appropriate garden area or other safe discharge location away from the foundation. The EPA guide puts it plainly: “You should provide an overflow for water if the barrel fills to the top.”

Test and maintain the system

Check the outlet and connections for leaks, and confirm that water can leave through the overflow without pooling against the house. You can observe the route during rain or use a controlled water test. Keep the inlet screen, gutters and overflow clear so water can enter and excess water can drain as intended.

Use stored water regularly. For mosquito prevention, the EPA’s Tips to Prevent Mosquito Bites advises emptying or changing rain-barrel water at least once a week to destroy potential mosquito habitat. A secure screen and routine checks also help keep debris and insects out.

Use the water safely and winterize the barrel

Treat roof runoff collected in a rain barrel as non-potable: do not drink it or use it for household purposes or pets. EPA guidance also advises against spraying it directly onto vegetables or leaves. Follow local public-health guidance for any edible-garden use. Roof composition and condition can affect water quality, so do not assume that a screen or first-flush device makes captured water safe to drink.

Secure the barrel against tipping, and do not let children play in or around it. Where freezing weather occurs, disconnect and empty the barrel, clean it, and store it upside down or covered in a protected location. Remove and store hoses and screens as appropriate for the barrel and kit instructions.
