A uniform floor finish starts with identifying the exact self-leveling epoxy resurfacer and its complete system. “This” product is not identified by the title, and epoxy formulations differ in primer, component count, aggregate, thickness, temperature limits, pot life, and cure schedule. Obtain the product label, current product data sheet (PDS), and safety data sheet (SDS) before mixing anything. The workflow below explains how to plan and execute the work without transferring one product’s instructions to another.

Confirm that you have an epoxy resurfacer

Self-leveling epoxy resurfacer is a resin system designed to create a thicker, flatter wearing surface over a prepared substrate. It is not interchangeable with a thin epoxy coating, a cement-based floor leveler, or a patching compound. First confirm the product is intended for your existing floor, the expected traffic, and the finish you want.

Epoxy and cementitious resurfacers are different materials

QUIKRETE Self-Leveling Floor Resurfacer No. 1249-50 is described as a cement-based interior topping or underlayment for concrete, not an epoxy system. Sakrete Fast-Setting Self-Leveling Resurfacer is also cementitious. Their water ratios, installation methods, working times, and cure behavior must not be applied to an epoxy kit.

Thin coating or high-build self-leveling system?

A thin coating is normally distributed with a squeegee and back-rolled. A high-build self-leveling slurry is placed at a specified depth, commonly with a notched squeegee or pin rake, then treated to release entrapped air. The selected PDS should state which method applies. Calling a thin coating “self-leveling” does not make it suitable for a thick resurfacing build.

Define the service conditions before ordering material

Write down the substrate, room conditions, traffic, and finish requirements before choosing a kit. A residential utility room, a warehouse aisle, and a food-processing area can require different resin chemistry, slip resistance, chemical resistance, and cure restrictions.

  • Substrate: Confirm the system accepts your concrete, previous coating, repair mortar, or other base. If the PDS does not list that substrate, obtain written technical confirmation rather than guessing.
  • Traffic: Identify foot traffic, carts, forklifts, impacts, hot tires, chemicals, and wash-down exposure. “Full cure” must be matched to the actual service, not merely to the point at which the surface feels hard.
  • Appearance: Decide whether you need a smooth colored surface or aggregate-modified texture. Aggregate can improve slip resistance, but it changes spread rate, texture, and cleaning characteristics.
  • Moisture and temperature: Record slab moisture, room temperature, substrate temperature, and relative humidity according to the product’s test method and limits.

Inspect and prepare the floor for bonding

Preparation determines whether the resurfacer can bond. Sika’s preparation guidance for one of its systems calls for clean, sound, dry concrete; removal of contaminants and weak or rough spots; mechanical preparation to a clean, open-textured surface; and thorough vacuuming. Treat those as preparation principles, not as universal numerical requirements. The chosen resurfacer’s PDS controls the acceptable profile and moisture limits.

1. Survey defects and contamination

Mark cracks, delaminated areas, hollow spots, oil, grease, curing compounds, paint, laitance, dust, and previous sealers. Probe suspect concrete and remove material that is loose or weak. A self-leveling product follows the strength and movement of the base; it does not repair structural movement by flowing over it.

2. Make repairs compatible with the system

Use repair materials approved by the resurfacer manufacturer, and allow them to reach the stated strength and dryness before coating. Treat active cracks, joints, and moving transitions according to the system details. Do not bridge a movement joint simply to make the color continuous; the joint may need to remain visible and flexible.

3. Mechanically profile and vacuum

Use the preparation method named by the PDS, such as grinding, shot blasting, or another approved mechanical process. Remove dust with industrial vacuuming and verify that no residue, oil film, or loose particles remain. Acid etching alone may not provide the required open profile and can leave soluble contamination behind.

4. Verify moisture acceptance

Perform the moisture tests and document the results exactly as the selected system specifies. Epoxy failures can result from vapor pressure or excess slab moisture even when the surface appears dry. If readings exceed the product limit, stop and address the moisture source or select a system designed for that condition.

Check the primer and every system component

Primer is not automatically optional. QuestMark states that its 8120SL requires a primer and names CM1015 or CM1144 for that system. That requirement cannot be transferred to another resurfacer, and those primers should not be assumed compatible with a different resin.

Before opening containers, compare the kit contents with the PDS and label:

  • Resin and hardener component names and quantities
  • Any aggregate, pigment, or broadcast media
  • Specified primer and recoat window
  • Mix ratio by volume or weight
  • Batch numbers and shelf life
  • Minimum and maximum air and substrate temperatures
  • Pot life, working time, and time between coats
  • Required squeegee, rake, roller, spike roller, mixer, and cleaning tools

AllPro’s technical bulletin illustrates why these checks matter: ratios, mixing, rolling, and temperature limits are formulation-specific. Never substitute a ratio or timing from an online example for the instructions in your kit.

Plan the pour for a continuous, even finish

Measure the floor and divide it into manageable bays with planned termination lines. Mark control joints, doorways, drains, columns, and changes in elevation. Stage all tools, components, lighting, and personnel before combining resin and hardener. A self-leveling material can continue curing while you search for a missing roller, producing a visible lap or ridge.

Calculate material from the selected product’s published coverage at the intended thickness. Coverage changes with surface profile, temperature, aggregate, porosity, and application technique. Keep batches from the same lot together where possible, and record where each batch is placed so color variation can be traced.

Mix and apply only to the product’s instructions

Mixing

Condition components within the manufacturer’s temperature range. Use the specified mixer and sequence, scrape the container only as directed, and mix for the full stated time without whipping unnecessary air into the resin. If aggregate is supplied, add it in the specified order and maintain a consistent dispersion. Do not add solvent, water, or extra aggregate unless the PDS expressly permits it.

Spreading a self-leveling slurry

For one Sika self-leveling slurry application, the manufacturer directs installers to spread with a notched squeegee or pin rake and immediately use a spiked roller in two directions. This is an example of a product-specific method, not a universal epoxy rule. Set the rake notch, target depth, and roller timing from your own PDS.

Applying a thinner coating

Sika distinguishes its thinner coating application from the slurry method: the material is squeegee-spread and then back-rolled. Using a spike roller on a thin coating, or back-rolling a high-build slurry when the PDS calls for a rake, can change thickness and appearance.

Maintain wet edges and avoid overworking

Follow the system’s instructions for connecting pours, maintaining a wet edge, releasing bubbles, and returning to missed areas. Keep workers in clean, approved footwear and prevent debris from falling into the wet film. Stop if the material begins to gel, drag, or lose its ability to flow; forcing it farther can create ridges that will remain visible after cure.

Example specifications—use them only as examples

The following figures describe named products and are not independent comparative test results. They are not instructions for an unidentified resurfacer.

Product Published system description Published figures or features

Control temperature, time, and access

Pot life begins when the components are combined, not when the container is opened. Higher temperatures generally shorten working time; cooler conditions can delay flow and cure. Use the exact temperature and humidity limits in the PDS, and measure the slab as well as the air.

Close the area and post the time at which light foot traffic, recoating, wheeled traffic, chemical exposure, and full service are permitted. QuestMark’s example separates 14–24 hours for light foot traffic from 2–7 days for full heavy-traffic cure at its stated conditions. Those milestones must not be reused for another product.

Safety, ventilation, and waste handling

The title does not identify the kit, so its hazards and personal protective equipment cannot be stated reliably here. Read the exact SDS and label before handling. Follow their requirements for gloves, eye and skin protection, respiratory protection, ventilation, spill control, storage, and disposal. Keep ignition sources away when the documentation requires it, and provide fresh-air ventilation without blowing dust or debris onto the wet floor.

Do not wash uncured resin into drains. Keep resin, hardener, contaminated rags, and empty containers in the waste stream specified by the SDS and local rules. If a worker develops symptoms or a spill occurs, use the emergency procedures on the product documentation.

Common failure modes and corrective decisions

Peeling or blisters

Likely causes include contamination, inadequate mechanical profile, weak concrete, or moisture outside the system limit. Do not simply abrade the visible defect and recoat. Remove unsound material, identify the cause, retest the substrate, and follow the manufacturer’s repair procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color variation or visible lap lines

Variation can come from different batches, inconsistent mixing, changing thickness, or allowing one section to cure before the next is joined. Use a bay plan, keep a wet edge where required, maintain a consistent spread rate, and blend batches only as the PDS permits.

Pinholes, bubbles, or craters

These may reflect porous concrete, trapped air, contamination, excessive mixing, or incorrect roller timing. Confirm the primer and pore-filling steps, then use the specified air-release method. Do not add thinner or solvent to make the surface flow unless the product documentation authorizes it.

Soft or slow-curing areas

Check component ratio, mixing time, temperature, and contamination. Isolate the area and prevent traffic. A soft spot may require removal rather than another coat; obtain technical guidance before attempting a repair.

Quality-control checklist before opening the kit

  1. Record the exact product name, batch, PDS revision, label, and SDS.
  2. Confirm substrate acceptance, intended service, thickness, coverage, temperature, humidity, and moisture limits.
  3. Complete repairs, mechanical profiling, cleaning, vacuuming, and moisture testing.
  4. Verify the approved primer and recoat window.
  5. Stage the correct mixer, gauge tools, squeegee or rake, rollers, spike roller, PPE, lighting, and waste containers.
  6. Mark bays, joints, edges, drains, and access routes.
  7. Measure and document component quantities before mixing each batch.
  8. Record start time, temperature, humidity, batch location, and access time.
  9. Inspect the cured surface for defects before allowing heavy service.

When to stop and obtain technical support

Pause the installation if the label and PDS disagree, the primer is unavailable, moisture exceeds the limit, the substrate is moving or unsound, the temperature is outside the range, or the material’s appearance and working time change unexpectedly. Provide the manufacturer or qualified flooring specialist with substrate details, test results, product batch, temperatures, mix quantities, and photographs. That information is more useful than guessing from a category name such as “self-leveling epoxy.”
