Yes—an access rooflight can turn a stairwell into a practical route to an otherwise unused roof terrace. The Glazing Vision Skydoor is a fully glazed, electrically operated hinged rooflight designed for regular passage, while also bringing daylight into the stairwell and providing controlled ventilation. It is a bespoke architectural component, not a standard window, so the opening, roof upstand, fall protection, wiring and commissioning must be designed together.
The current UK product page describes a 2026-generation synchronised actuator system that opens the lid to as much as 87° and can stop at any point. Older Skydoor2 documents describe different controls and a battery arrangement. Confirm the exact generation and specification in the quotation with Glazing Vision and your architect or installer before the roof structure is built.

What the Skydoor is designed to do
Glazing Vision presents the Skydoor as a fully glazed hinged opening rooflight for regular roof-terrace access from a stairwell. Pressing a control opens the lid, allowing a person to pass between the upper floor and the terrace. When closed, the unit functions as a weathered rooflight that admits daylight; when partially open, it can help ventilate the stairwell or roof space.
That combination matters where a stair rises to a flat or low-pitched roof but there is no practical external door. A rooflight that is only fixed or vent-only may improve light and air but is not intended to be walked through. An access unit must instead be sized around the stair geometry, protected against falls, connected to a suitable electrical supply and commissioned as a powered moving structure.

Access is the primary design decision
Decide whether people will use the opening occasionally for maintenance or regularly as the route to a roof terrace. Skydoor is marketed for regular access. If your requirement is only daylight or purge ventilation, a fixed or vent-only rooflight may be a more appropriate category; do not assume that a non-access model can safely substitute for a passage opening.
Opening sizes, pitch and upstand requirements
The current UK product page gives these external weathered upstand ranges:
| Dimension or setting | Published range | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum span | 1040 mm | Lower published span limit; the allowable combination depends on the full design. |
| Maximum span | 2100 mm | Upper published span limit, not a guarantee for every width, glazing or site. |
| Minimum width | 1300 mm | Lower published width limit for the weathered upstand. |
| Maximum width | 3800 mm | Upper published width limit; verify structural and configuration constraints. |
| Upstand pitch | 3°–10° | Glazing Vision recommends at least 5° for standard units. |
These are product-page ranges, not a promise that every endpoint can be combined in one order. The manufacturer says the permitted minimum and maximum dimensions depend on several factors. Your designer should set out the structural opening, kerb or upstand, waterproofing falls, headroom and landing before anyone orders the rooflight.
Measure the stairwell, not just the roof
Check the clear route from the final stair tread to the roof terrace. Allow for the upstand thickness, the opened lid, handrails, a landing and the direction in which people will step out. A large rooflight can still be awkward if the stair arrives too close to a parapet or if the open lid conflicts with a wall, plant or guardrail. Coordinate the opening with roof joists, insulation, membranes, drainage and any terrace surfacing.
How the Skydoor opens and closes
The current product page calls its synchronised actuator system new for 2026. It describes concealed drives, an opening angle of up to 87° and controlled stopping at any point. The intermediate positions are useful when you want ventilation without leaving a full access opening, but the exact movement and controls should be confirmed for the generation being quoted.

The dated 2023 Skydoor2 technical sheet describes wall-mounted control and an external power supply. Treat that document as the specification of that Skydoor2 version, not as an exhaustive description of every later unit. Ask for the wiring diagram and control schedule that apply to your order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsing it for ventilation
A partially opened lid can ventilate the stairwell or roof space, and the current actuator description allows the opening to stop at a chosen position. Ventilation is not a substitute for weather awareness: the operation manual warns against leaving the unit open in rain. A specified rain sensor can close the rooflight automatically, but automatic closure still needs to be coordinated with people using the stairs and with the control system.
What happens in a power cut?
Battery backup is listed among the current product options. Glazing Vision’s 2025 Skydoor2 launch announcement says that version included a battery pack as standard and used a battery override to close during a power outage. Because the current page, the older manual and the launch announcement describe different generations, have the supplier state in writing whether your quoted unit includes a battery, how it is operated and how long the reserve is expected to last. Do not assume that a generic motor, battery or control will be compatible.
Fall protection and moving-part safety
Glazing Vision highly recommends a balustrade installed by others around a Skydoor2 used for access. The open lid can act as a barrier on one side, but it does not provide a complete guard around the opening. Your project professional must design the remaining protection, landing and gate or handrail arrangement to suit the building and the jurisdiction.
The current product page lists integrated proximity sensors and overload cut-off. The operation manual explains that infrared sensors detect an obstruction, while warning that crush and trapping injuries remain possible. Keep fingers, clothing, tools and other objects clear of the hinges and closing edges; never treat the sensors as permission to stand beneath or obstruct the lid.

Specify the unit before construction starts
A Skydoor quotation should be coordinated with the roof design rather than added after the opening has been framed. Work through these decisions in order:
- Survey the route. Record the stair width, final riser, headroom, landing depth, parapets, roof structure and the direction of travel onto the terrace.
- Set the weathered upstand. Confirm the span, width, pitch and waterproofing details with the architect, roof contractor and Glazing Vision technical team. Use the published ranges as a starting point, not as a self-designed opening schedule.
- Select glazing and thermal build-up. The technical sheet says glazing specifications vary and should be discussed with a technical sales adviser. The 2025 launch article describes a thermally broken frame and optional triple glazing; neither statement establishes a project-specific U-value or household energy saving.
- Choose controls and safety options. The current page lists remote control, rain sensor, isolator, thermostat, keypad or key switch, battery backup, building-management-system connectivity, Easy Clean coating and kerb-top trim. Availability and whether an item is standard or optional depend on the product generation and order.
- Design fall protection. Include the recommended balustrade, handrail transitions, gate strategy and the open lid’s position in the terrace layout. Confirm who supplies and installs the balustrade.
- Freeze the electrical design. Provide the manufacturer’s wiring diagram to a qualified electrician. Identify the isolator, control location, backup arrangement and any connection to a building-management system before first fix.
Glazing Vision provides product specification, installation guidance, NBS clause information, operation and maintenance documentation, CAD drawings and a BIM model on its product materials. Use the current documents for the exact generation and have the design team resolve any conflict between an older Skydoor2 drawing and a 2026 quotation.
Installation, commissioning and everyday operation
The operation manual requires proper installation and commissioning in accordance with the installation instructions before use. Electrical work must be carried out by a qualified and competent electrician using Glazing Vision’s wiring diagrams. Unauthorised repairs or dismantling can create both safety and warranty problems, so route faults through the installer or manufacturer rather than attempting to adjust the actuators yourself.
Commissioning checklist
- Verify that the frame, upstand and waterproofing are complete and correctly flashed.
- Test the full opening range, intermediate stops, controls, sensors and overload cut-off with the area clear.
- Confirm the rain-sensor behaviour, if specified, and the procedure for manual or battery-assisted closing.
- Check that the balustrade, treadplate, landing and terrace route are complete before handover.
- Record the maintenance schedule, wiring information and the warranty documents supplied with the unit.
Cleaning and maintenance
The manual calls for regular cleaning and maintenance. Keep the glazing, sensor areas, hinges and drainage paths free of dirt and debris, and arrange servicing at the interval specified for the installed unit. The manufacturer states a minimum ten-year lifespan for Skydoor 2 with recommended servicing by Glazing Vision; that is a manufacturer statement, not an independently verified service-life study.

Weather, air and water performance: read the test scope
Glazing Vision reports air permeability of EN 12207 Class 4 at ±600 Pa and watertightness of EN 12208 Class 9A at 600 Pa for a tested specimen measuring 1314 mm span by 3488 mm width at a 3° pitch. Those classifications describe that specimen and those test conditions. They are not a blanket certification for every bespoke size, glazing build-up, pitch or installation.
The same qualification applies to thermal performance. The reviewed product information does not establish a project-specific U-value, energy-saving figure or embodied-carbon result. Ask for the performance calculation for your selected dimensions and glazing, and make sure it is coordinated with the roof’s insulation and airtightness strategy.
Choosing between access, ventilation and other formats
| Requirement | Suitable design direction | Checks that still apply |
|---|---|---|
| Regular passage from a stairwell to a roof terrace | An access rooflight such as Skydoor, with a designed landing and balustrade | Opening geometry, fall protection, controls, backup power, weather exposure and maintenance |
| Daylight with occasional ventilation but no passage | Fixed or vent-only rooflight category | Ventilation control, rain protection, thermal performance and safe maintenance access |
| Different access geometry or a freestanding roof installation | Compare other access formats in the manufacturer’s range, such as SkyHatch or Free Standing Skybox | Use each product’s own dimensional, structural and safety data; do not transfer Skydoor limits to another model |
The right comparison is functional, not simply a choice of names. Examine the available opening, stairwell geometry, fall protection, weather exposure, glazing specification, controls, backup arrangements, maintenance burden and test evidence for the exact unit.

No current price, lead time, product-specific warranty duration or installer-partner list is established in the published material considered here. The manual refers to a warranty document supplied with the product and says prescribed maintenance is required to maintain warranty coverage. Obtain those terms with the quotation, including what is covered for actuators, glazing, controls, batteries and installation.
Planning permission and Building Regulations obligations depend on the project, location and the way the roof terrace is used. A manufacturer’s general product information cannot approve an opening, balustrade or change of use. Have the project architect, building-control professional and structural engineer confirm the requirements that apply to your build.
Questions to put on the quotation
- Which product generation is being supplied: the current 2026 actuator configuration or an earlier Skydoor2 arrangement?
- What clear opening, external upstand dimensions and pitch are achievable for this stair and roof structure?
- Which glazing build-up, thermal values and weather-performance evidence apply to this exact size?
- Is the battery backup included, optional or unavailable, and what is the closing procedure during a power cut?
- Which sensors, rain protection, isolator and controls are included, and who commissions them?
- Who designs, supplies and certifies the balustrade and the terrace landing?
- What cleaning, servicing, warranty and emergency-fault procedures will be handed over?
A Skydoor can make a roof terrace genuinely usable, but the success of the project depends on the complete assembly: a correctly sized and weathered opening, a safe stair landing, engineered fall protection, qualified electrical work and a documented maintenance plan. Resolve those items with Glazing Vision and your project professionals before construction fixes the opening.
