Seeed Studio’s ESP32-C3 ePaper Panel Brings Low-Power Home Assistant Dashboards to a 7.5-Inch Screen

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Seeed Studio’s XIAO 7.5-inch ePaper Panel is a battery-powered, monochrome information display for Home Assistant, ESPHome, Arduino, and TRMNL projects. It combines an 800×480 ePaper screen with a XIAO ESP32-C3 controller, a 2,000mAh rechargeable battery, and a 3D-printed PLA enclosure with stand.

It is best understood as a glanceable status panel—not an Android tablet or interactive smart-home hub. It can show temperatures, weather, calendars, security states, energy data, and automation notifications, but its slow refresh and lack of documented touch hardware make it unsuitable for fast controls, video, or continuously changing dashboards.

What Seeed launched

The XIAO 7.5-inch ePaper Panel is a maker-oriented embedded display built around Seeed’s XIAO ESP32-C3 board. The ESP32-C3 provides Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, and a single-core 32-bit RISC-V processor running at up to 160MHz. It connects to the network, receives data from Home Assistant, renders the display, and manages sleep and wake cycles; it is not a tablet-class computer.

Why ePaper suits Home Assistant

ePaper retains its image without continuously powering a backlight. That makes it useful for an entryway, kitchen, bedroom, office, or utility room where information should remain visible without the energy use of an always-on LCD. It is also designed for ambient-light readability, although viewing angle, lighting, and layout still affect readability.

The strongest applications are relatively stable information:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Indoor temperature and humidity
  • Weather forecasts
  • Calendar events and schedules
  • Door, window, and alarm status
  • Thermostat mode and setpoint
  • Household energy consumption and solar generation
  • Air-quality readings
  • Battery levels
  • Automation messages such as “laundry finished”

The trade-off is refresh speed. A full update can take seconds, and frequent updates can cause flashing or ghosting. Layouts should use large text, simple icons, clear state changes, and deliberate refreshes rather than attempting to imitate a continuously animated tablet dashboard.

Home Assistant setup through ESPHome

The documented Home Assistant route is ESPHome. This is not a plug-and-play Lovelace tablet: you must create firmware, configure the display, flash the panel, connect it to Wi-Fi, and then add it to Home Assistant.

Seeed’s product-specific cookbook uses these connections and the 7.50inv2 display model:

spi:
  clk_pin: GPIO8
  mosi_pin: GPIO10

display:
  - platform: waveshare_epaper
    cs_pin: GPIO3
    dc_pin: GPIO5
    busy_pin:
      number: GPIO4
      inverted: true
    reset_pin: GPIO2
    model: 7.50inv2
    update_interval: 30s
    lambda: |-
      it.print(0, 0, id(font1), "Hello World!");

The 30-second interval is a demonstration value, not a battery-life recommendation. A practical battery-powered installation should refresh only as often as necessary, or wake when an important state changes.

Typical installation path

  1. Install or open ESPHome in your Home Assistant environment.
  2. Create an ESP32-C3 device configuration.
  3. Apply the pin assignments and ePaper model from Seeed’s ESPHome cookbook.
  4. Add Wi-Fi credentials and Home Assistant API settings.
  5. Compile and flash the firmware over USB or with a documented ESPHome flashing method.
  6. Allow the device to join Wi-Fi.
  7. In Home Assistant, open Settings → Devices & services, locate the discovered ESPHome device, click Configure, enter the API encryption key from secrets.yaml, and add the device.
  8. Reference Home Assistant entities in the display lambda and test refresh behavior before mounting the panel.

For users without an existing Home Assistant server, Seeed’s tutorial presents Home Assistant Green as a simple host. Existing users can instead use a Raspberry Pi, server, NAS, or virtual machine.

Battery life: what three months means

Seeed describes approximately three months of battery life in deep-sleep operation. The launch material associates that claim with a refresh roughly every six hours. It should therefore be read as an approximate, conditional result—not a guarantee for every firmware configuration.

Runtime depends on refresh frequency, Wi-Fi connection time, signal strength, reconnection behavior, sleep implementation, battery age, temperature, and how often the display wakes. A 30-second update interval may be useful while developing a layout but is fundamentally different from a low-power deployment that refreshes every few hours or only after meaningful events.

The ePaper image can remain visible while the controller sleeps or is disconnected. However, current Home Assistant information requires the panel to wake, reconnect, and communicate with the local network. Weak Wi-Fi can increase wake time and reduce runtime.

Recovery and firmware maintenance

Seeed documents Boot and Reset buttons behind the stand. Boot is used to enter bootloader mode when normal serial upload is unavailable; Reset restarts the program.

Pin assignments, ESPHome component names, Home Assistant menus, and flashing workflows can change. Check the current Seeed documentation before flashing a new device or troubleshooting a later firmware version.

Practical hardware limitations

  • Monochrome only: The screen is designed for text, icons, and simple status graphics rather than rich color dashboards.
  • Slow updates: Refreshes take seconds and may flash or leave ghosting.
  • No documented touch input: It is a display endpoint, not a touch controller.
  • No documented multimedia hardware: The supplied sources do not identify a speaker, microphone, camera, or voice assistant.
  • Limited listed expansion: The comparison datasheet lists no SD-card support or expansion interfaces.
  • Wi-Fi dependence: Network-based updates require a working local connection.
  • PLA enclosure: The printed case is practical for makers but is not equivalent to a sealed, professionally finished wall panel. Avoid hot locations and consider cable access, charging access, and mounting strength.

Seeed’s documentation also links to a community wall-mount model, which may be more suitable than the included stand for a permanent installation.

How it compares with alternatives

Seeed reTerminal E1001

The reTerminal E1001 is another 7.5-inch, 800×480 monochrome ePaper product. Seeed’s comparison data lists an ESP32-S3 controller, metal enclosure, battery monitoring, SD-card support, UART and I2C expansion, and SenseCraft HMI support, with an MSRP range of $69–$76.99. It is the more attractive choice for buyers who want a finished enclosure and additional hardware interfaces.

Seeed reTerminal E1002

The E1002 uses a 7.3-inch full-color 800×480 display and an ESP32-S3. The comparison datasheet lists an MSRP range of $99–$109.99 and a slower listed refresh time than the monochrome alternatives. It makes sense when color matters more than speed, simplicity, or price.

TRMNL 7.5-inch OG DIY Kit

The TRMNL 7.5-inch OG DIY Kit uses an ESP32-S3-based Seeed board, a similar 7.5-inch 800×480 monochrome display, and a 2,000mAh battery. Its main distinction is the TRMNL dashboard ecosystem. Choose it when that software experience is the priority; choose the XIAO panel when you want a direct ESPHome and Home Assistant build around the ESP32-C3.

Tablet or LCD wall panel

A used Android tablet or dedicated LCD wall panel is generally better for touch controls, fast refresh, video, camera feeds, rich Lovelace dashboards, and constant interaction. The Seeed panel wins on low power, persistent glanceable information, ambient-light readability, and maker-level firmware control.

Who should buy it?

The XIAO 7.5-inch ePaper Panel is a strong choice if you want a large, low-power Home Assistant status screen, your data changes occasionally, and you are comfortable editing YAML and flashing firmware. The included enclosure and battery also save substantial assembly work.

Choose something else if you need touch input, color, animations, video, cameras, speakers, voice control, extensive I/O, certified commercial hardware, or a polished appliance that requires no firmware configuration. For most buyers, the central decision is simple: this is an excellent quiet information board, but a poor substitute for an interactive tablet.
