Seeds Not Germinating? 6 Reasons Your Seeds Aren’t Sprouting

Seeds may fail to sprout because of age, unsuitable temperature or moisture, incorrect depth, poor growing medium, or unmet dormancy needs. Here’s how to check each cause and test old seed.

If seeds aren’t sprouting, first check the packet’s expected germination time and the conditions where they were planted. Common causes include old or poorly stored seed, unsuitable temperature or moisture, incorrect depth, compacted or salty growing medium, and missing dormancy treatment. A seed that has not appeared above the soil is not necessarily dead: it may be dormant, still germinating underground, or slow for its species.

Why seeds fail to sprout

Seeds need suitable temperature, moisture and air; light requirements depend on the species. As Penn State Extension puts it, “Temperature, moisture, air, and light conditions must be correct for seeds to germinate.” Penn State Extension’s overview of seed and seedling biology explains how those needs vary.

1. The seed is old or was stored poorly

Germination and seedling vigor can decline with age and storage conditions. If one variety fails while seeds started under the same conditions sprout, that can point to a seed viability issue. Test a sample before deciding whether to replace the seed.

2. The temperature does not suit the species

Each species has its own minimum, optimum and maximum germination temperatures. Cool conditions can slow germination; excessive heat can also prevent it or damage the seed. Check the packet or a crop-specific guide rather than assuming every seed needs warmth. A soil thermometer can help you compare the medium’s temperature with the recommendation. If the starting area is too cool, a seed-starting heat mat with thermostat may help, but it will not solve unrelated problems.

3. The medium is too dry or too wet

Seeds need water to begin growing, but persistently waterlogged medium can restrict oxygen exchange. Keep the medium evenly moist and ensure excess water can drain; avoid leaving seeds saturated. Moisture and aeration are linked, so a wet medium may create conditions that prevent germination even when the seed has enough water.

4. The seed is planted at the wrong depth

Seeds planted too deeply may not reach the surface. Seeds planted too shallowly may dry out, and some species need light to germinate. Follow the packet’s sowing depth and light instructions; do not apply one depth to every seed.

5. The growing medium is compacted or has excess salts

Compaction can make emergence difficult, while fertilizer placed too close to seed may interfere with emergence. Penn State Extension lists both among possible causes of poor emergence in its poor plant health diagnostic guide. The University of Minnesota Extension’s troubleshooting page, updated March 25, 2026, also identifies high salts in some potting mixes as a possible germination inhibitor: Troubleshooting seedling issues.

6. The seed needs a dormancy-breaking treatment

Some species will not germinate until they receive a particular cue or pretreatment. Depending on the species, that may mean cold, moist stratification, soaking, scarification or another specific step. Check instructions for the exact plant, especially for native flowers and woody plants. The University of Illinois Extension guide to seed stratification explains which seeds may require cold treatment.

What to check first

Change one likely cause at a time where possible. If several kinds of seed fail in the same tray, check conditions or the medium shared by all of them; if only one variety fails, investigate that seed’s viability and species-specific requirements.

  1. Check the expected germination window. Use the packet or a reliable species-specific reference before deciding the seed has failed. Timing varies by species and conditions.
  2. Measure temperature where the seed is. Compare the medium’s temperature with the crop-specific recommendation. Penn State Extension discusses crop-specific temperature ranges in Sowing Annual Seeds; University of Illinois Extension notes that a heat mat may help in a cool starting location in its seed-starting troubleshooting guide.
  3. Review moisture and drainage. Aim for evenly moist medium with air exchange, not waterlogged conditions.
  4. Check depth and light instructions. Follow the packet, including any direction to surface-sow seeds that need light.
  5. Look for pretreatment directions. Check whether the species needs stratification, scarification, soaking or another treatment.
  6. Test questionable seed. A small germination test can help distinguish low viability from a problem in the planting conditions.

How to test whether old seed is still viable

The University of Illinois Extension’s January 20, 2023 guide describes a simple paper-towel test using a sample of ten or more seeds. It provides an estimate of germination, not a guarantee that seedlings will later thrive.

  1. Moisten a paper towel and place ten or more seeds on it.
  2. Put the towel in a sealed bag or container. Label it with the plant and the test’s start date.
  3. Keep the sample warm and check it every few days, using the seed packet’s expected timing as your guide.
  4. Count the seeds that germinate and calculate the percentage: divide the number germinated by the number tested, then multiply by 100.

In the 2023 guide, Illinois Extension says a seed lot with a germination rate of 70% to 90% may still be usable if you sow more heavily. Below 50% to 60%, it says it is probably best to buy new seed. These are practical rules of thumb from that source, not universal legal or laboratory standards. The same guide says many seeds in its discussion germinate within 7 to 10 days; that is not a universal deadline for every species. For storage, it recommends keeping seed cool and dry, with low humidity and temperatures below 45°F (7°C). Storage needs vary, so follow the supplier’s guidance for the seed in question. Distinguish germination failure from other problems

  • Germination versus emergence: Germination begins when the seed starts to grow. Emergence is when the seedling reaches above the medium. A seed can germinate underground but fail to emerge if it is too deep or meets crusted or resistant medium.
  • Dormant versus dead: A viable dormant seed may need the right cue before it germinates. No visible sprout alone does not prove the seed is dead.
  • No sprout versus seedling collapse: If a seedling emerges and then collapses at the soil line, that is different from a seed that never appears. Illinois Extension describes damping-off as a disease associated with soil-borne fungi and wet, cool conditions in its seed-starting troubleshooting guide.

Choose a remedy that matches the cause

Use tools to address or investigate the specific condition at issue. A heat mat can help with cool starting conditions; a thermometer helps measure temperature. Neither fixes old seed, excessive depth, poor drainage or a missing dormancy treatment. Check the species’ instructions before changing conditions or adding equipment.
